ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

The developers at 'Hello Games' must be jumping up and down with an abundance of joy after reading Frontiers confirmation of 'No VR support'. Well its NMS who will now have my full support and I look forward to enjoying all that their game provides; which is a considerable amount more than what Frontier can offer. Talk about how a small team of devs can put Frontier to shame. NMS is already a VR masterpiece and with each passing month improves even more. Elite Dangerous, on the other hand, appears to be going backwards... Your statement should read, "Odyssey anyone? We will not give you VR but our Frontier artists will work hard at giving you space-suit paint jobs: Ca-ching!, Ca-ching!"

It makes me think that they put it on the back burner because they didn't think it'd cause such an issue, and now are reassuring people they haven't abandoned it while quietly considering how quickly they could get it done.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was the case. I'm looking at nearly 90 pages of this particular train wreck and I'm thinking, this isn't probably the reception they were expecting for this announcement.

Sure, sure, loud minority and so on. Nothing to see here. But eventually the loud minorities add up. Mac. PvP. Powerplay. VR.

Running slowly but steadily out of friends. But maybe some Doom Eternal players will migrate over when Odyssey arrives.

It does appear to be a real gift for NMS.

I understand the issues that some people are having over the announcement of the lack of VR. While I personally do not and will not play VR games (seriously makes me sick and gives me a headache after only a few minutes) I really hope that FDev works quickly, and Carefully, to deliver VR to Odyssey.

I put myself in your shoes. Imagine if they announced Odyssey had all these wonderful features.... but you had to give up your HOTAS... keyboard and mouse only. I'd probably stop playing the game too.

I feel for you, our VR players, and hope for you, better news will come in, in the coming months.

But you aren't losing anything, you just won't get something extra.

Non-VR support is a deal breaker for me, not gonna buy the expansion. I just PRAY that you do not cease VR suppport for the base game for all of us who don't buy Odyssey.... In case you do, I will part with ED forever, no matter when you decide to include the VR support. It has been the most important factor for me to stay with the game for so long.

20+ years of FPS games that didn't have VR from Doom to PubG and lately it is heartbreaking to see people post that adding FPS scenarios to a space-sim without VR is a deal breaker. Come on!
Most VR users are more concerned about not being able to experience landing and flying around the updated planets in VR... after all Elite Dangerous has always been a space flight simulator. If I wanted to play an FPS, I’d look elsewhere.

Maybe moan at VR hardware makers for slow hardware evolution or not having standardised on inputs yet or Graphics chipset makers for putting their top tier out of reach for most people in the last few years. The VR industry is a mess and should take some responsibility.

Like it was Apple's fault that the macOS client was removed. Remember, Frontier are never responsible for what happens in their game.

Oh absolutely, but no doubt it'll get flooded with positivity as more dev diaries and info gets revealed. Minor a supset of the audience we may be, after all. I understand the perception some may have of us VR users being privileged and whiny because we can't use our expensive magic goggles on the new update, I really get it. Here's the deal though.

I'm not threatening to quit playing elite, I already said my goals just changed from getting Odyssey to waiting until it supports my setup and playing Horizons until then. The fact is, at the end of the day you become accustom to playing a certain way. Folks with HOTAS would probably not be thrilled if their sticks stopped working. Folks with big multi-mon setups would likely not be excited to only play on a single smaller monitor. I just can't picture myself playing Elite without the VR so I'll continue to do so in VR in the old version until the new update works with my hardware.

So you'd like Frontier to release Odyssey in VR - and do exactly what Hello Games did and reduce PCVR to the same level as PSVR?
I also have NMS, it has moved from rather good, detailed graphics (but abysmal performance) in VR to a blurry mess... Masterpiece? Hardly, sorry!
No thanks.

I can understand people are smarting due to the absence of VR at launch, but from a purely commercial standpoint, the overall number of players in VR is low. Getting the experience right first and then bringing VR in later would make sense, even if it's deeply unpopular with the vocal minority.

Played ED in VR for years now. Why would I want to go back?

You're not "going back" - you're standing still. ED continues to offer VR support. Its simply that the new game doesn't - at launch.

Was this leaked Tim.
Seems a bit of a messy and ill timed release.
Be honest.

There are certainly performance considerations, but Frontier could have at least made Odyssey usable in VR while sitting in ships or SRVs - they don't appeat tobe doing even that.
