ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

So you'd like Frontier to release Odyssey in VR - and do exactly what Hello Games did and reduce PCVR to the same level as PSVR?
I also have NMS, it has moved from rather good, detailed graphics (but abysmal performance) in VR to a blurry mess... Masterpiece? Hardly, sorry!
No thanks.
I agree, NMS on PC VR, at least, looks like garbage.

I strongly believe VR needs to be looked at as a platform with games designed specifically for it, not just as an add on to a traditional 3D accelerated game.

Those were the low hanging fruit. There was the time you thought any advancement in PC VR was unfair to you console players who didn't have any VR... anyhows the point is, the comment you made is rich coming from you, someone who has done exactly the same on these forums, complaining , whinging and yes, begging for console VR support...like that was ever going to happen....
LOL busted

Not having Odyssey in VR (at launch) just means I'll only be buying a single copy instead of 3 at launch.
Should VR actually appear in the future then I'll purchase 2 further copies, simple.
I play equally happily in VR & Pancake, prefer VR of course, but can only really splurge in the warmer months, when the doors can be left open and my 2 geriatric dogs can go weewee without my having to get up and let them out/back in :)

I can understand people are smarting due to the absence of VR at launch, but from a purely commercial standpoint, the overall number of players in VR is low. Getting the experience right first and then bringing VR in later would make sense, even if it's deeply unpopular with the vocal minority.

You're not "going back" - you're standing still. ED continues to offer VR support. Its simply that the new game doesn't - at launch.

actually we are going back. If we can't play the functions we have now in VR (flying and SRV) in the Oddyssey launcher, it means we have to restart the game everytime we get out of our ship or SRV and back. That's going back.

I also think you're mistaking how many people are playing in VR.

I don't think I've clocked more than a hand full of my 2000+ hours in elite outside of VR. No VR means there is no way I'm buying this. It's completely useless to release it. So that's where all the development effort has gone: another useless 'feature' nobody wants.

Why can Half-life Alyx deliverer steady 90 fps in VR always, when ED stutters along with reprojection in so many places in the game? I think the Cobra engine is on its last legs. I'd be really surprised if they weren't using something like Unity or Unreal for the planetary stuff.

Remember how the release of mining was an utter show in VR? So bad that I'm sure they never even tested it! Looks like VR is on the way out for Frontier.

FD did. They are removing it
That is the issue. If it NEVER had VR then it would.not be such an issue
Everyone can play on a monitor. No, feelings don't matter here. I am speaking scientifically. If you can use VR, you both can use and have a traditional monitor.

Not everyone can play on VR, be it for money, or health.

If one has to go, it will be the latter.

Sorry to burst your bubble.

It is sad really, as in pancake (4K for me) it is very detailed and vibrant colours, in Vr is is hard to believe it is the same game... But I suppose us VR players have been spoilt by a lot of very good content.

I hadn't touched ANY game in 35 years until VR came out. That's when I started playing again.. As long as there are still other games in VR to play I'll play.. if not.. I can do other things with my time.

@frontier: I'm very disappointed that VR will not be supported in Odyssey (at launch, which usually means "forever"). VR used to be a first class citizen in ED years ago.

Could you please clarify: Given we have bought the Odyssey DLC, …
  • …will we be able to at least use our spaceships on the new Odyssey planet types in VR?
  • …wIll we be able to drive around in SRVs on the new planet types in VR?
  • …will there be a smooth transition between VR content and non-VR content? Currently to switch you'd need to restart the game, which of course isn't smooth.

I'm curious. Have there been feature updates to the vanilla game after Horizons was launched? I have no experience with vanilla myself, I've only ever played Horizons.

What I'm after here is whether this means that for the VR users (who won't migrate over from Horizons to Odyssey), the game will effectively stop evolving once Odyssey launches and all future content updates will be applied as increments on top of Odyssey only? Or do the vanilla and Horizons versions still get new features, not just the mandatory maintenance updates to keep them compatible with a common back end that evolves according to Odyssey's roadmap?
