ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

Hey Tim, thanks for the clarification on VR but I am still desperately trying to justify purchasing the new expansion and would like some clarification. You said that VR still works in Horizons and Base game. Okay, does this mean the content from those games works in VR no matter what, or that I need to launch THAT VERSION of the game to play in VR? In other words, can I:

Fire up the launcher. Launch Elite Dangerous Odyssey and be in my ship IN VR. Can I fly around and scoot around like normal in VR. Can I fly onto an atmosphere planet in VR and enjoy the vistas, and can I get in my SRV as usual in VR and not worry about it... and then just not engage in legs to avoid being booted to my minitor? Will it do what BEAT SABER does when going into the level editor and pop up saying "You must remove your headset to continue" and allow me to go into legs if I really want to without needing to boot the game back up outside of VR or go into the graphics settings?

OR

In order to play in VR, do I need to explicitly launch Elite Dangerous Horizons and lock myself out of all the new features because I am simply unable to launch the Odessey version of the game and use my VR headset, thus restricting me to being unable to enjoy ANY of the new content until some currently unspecified update?

If it's the former, i still intend to purchase the expansion and enjoy what i can with it. If it's the latter, I'll wait.
It would be as they said. Odyssey is not compatible with VR. You launch in Odyssey, it won't be in VR. You launch in base game or horizons it will have the option of VR.

I want it in VR too, so hopefully it will be implemented at some point as I love ED in VR.

The only thing I can think of that might be a compromised experience..... no, let's just call it slightly clunky, is the transition from one control device, HOTAS/keyboard/mouse etc, to VR controllers, and back. But that is far from a deal breaker, and is probably 100% necessary and expected. What other reason might there be to suggest that this wouldn't work?
The xbox gamepad for walking, why not?

My take is that Odyssey is using a new engine that does not have VR support. They are not sure what the effort level will be to include VR and are pushing it to a back burner. Expect it to come out about the same time as VR for the PS4. The statement that was made on the live stream was "You can log in to Horizons for VR play" says that you will need to be in the old engine for it.

It'll be using Cobra like every other FD game.

According to some German game site with some info on Oddysey, apparently walking on ships is not in this update. Instead we'll deploy on ground as we do with the SRV currently.
I'm hoping that is not correct, but we'll see. Not a deal breaker, but kind of a bummer.

Now you have me thinking... I'm getting the feeling that we wont be able to walk around rocky airless worlds that we've been accustomed to since Horizons...

Airless worlds: SRV only.
Atmospheric worlds: foot only.

Could be wrong but I think the "modular" nature of the expansions seem to point in that possible direction. That's why we can log off in our SRV on a planet and re-log is with the base game (not horizons) and be placed in orbit.

I'm getting the feeling that something similar will happen here.

They dont have any info other than what we have. That German site was explicitly making a Star Citizen vs Elite comparison, which makes sense when you see some of the pieces they have run about SC. That's not to say they arent right - but its not through secret info we dont have.

I said proof of begging. This is just me wishing i had it. Do you understand what begging means?

Begging (also panhandling) is the practice of imploring others to grant a favor, often a gift of money, with little or no expectation of reciprocation
Those were the low hanging fruit. There was the time you thought any advancement in PC VR was unfair to you console players who didn't have any VR... anyhows the point is, the comment you made is rich coming from you, someone who has done exactly the same on these forums, complaining , whinging and yes, begging for console VR support...like that was ever going to happen....

Let's be positive: basically, VR will stay with Horizons and the base game. So everything required is just a restart of the game client if you want to access any Odyssey features. While this is really cumbersome, we can still fight in VR and such and not be completely locked out from new content. We even might have access to new ships in Horizons as long as we have Odyssey as it is now with the base game. It could be worse, given the 30+ weeks of play time I put into this game. On the other hand, parting one day is inevitable and this change not only saves me a real lot of money, but makes it a lot easier. What's not to be loved? YMMV.

O7,
🙃

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?
Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

That's very disappointing to hear. VR kept me interested in the game. I'll be getting the "new era" when (if) it is VR compatible. Cheers.

It’s the knock on effects for no VR. Not worth investing in more paint packs, arx etc as my game time will go down. Was looking at a pc upgrade for around launch time but will save my money. No more voicepacks brought because I have a load and as previously stated my game time will most likely be reduced.

Do you have some kind of infatuation that you need to discuss my posts from unrelated threads repeatedly? Ive seen no begging because i havent begged. Get over it, this obsession with me is getting creepy

Friendship ended with odyssey, now Horizons is my new best friend.

New 2021 goal: take my FC out into the black in Horizons and disappear until Odessey supports VR. If it never does, then I guess a full transition to NMS is in order, I wonder what their next big update will be.

Well, I'm sorry to say that this will be the first Elite expansion that I won't be buying until VR is working.

Not interested in a game where part of it is in VR and then I have to get out of the VR for other bits and back into VR again. Sorry too much bother for my interest.
