ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

I see a whole lot of antagonistic posts from non-VR users in here for some reason. People aren't "whining" they're incredibly disappointed that their hardware and method of playing for the past 4+ years has been left behind in this new expansion. You wouldn't be happy either if you were in the same position. 100% valid complaints to be aired here for FDEV to see.

interesting that anyone would even think that. It’s almost like a political issue for some!

We are simply sad, even angry. If Xbox Support was removed from the next update, there would be riots and people would understandably voicing their grievances. Are we not allowed to express displeasure because we are a minority? Without bringing economics into it, I have three accounts, hundreds of dollars worth of cosmetics and a LEP. putting aside for a moment the cost of the hardware itself, I’d say it makes me fairly “invested” in the outcome of this game. If that outcome is one I find undesirable, you would assume it to be in my own interests to let Frontier know.

The only thing is a disagree with about the above post is that “disappointed“ is an understatement. Besides I thought the internet was built expressly for whining! ;)

And it did not have that at launch. See, there are things called "businesses". And they make cost/benefit analyses.
Profit? FD knows how many of their customers use VR. And they chose not to include it at launch. So that tells me it wasn't a significant number, relative to the cost of including it at launch.

"And its really funny,,. in a publisher world, we would probably have had to put together a business case to support it (VR). I reckon it took less time supporting oculus rift on DK1 than it would have done to prepare a business case".

Y'all need to stop crying about VR. They'll probably implement it at some point in the future and even if they don't just take your damn VR headset off when you get out of your ship and put it back on when you're back on your ship. They probably didn't wanna waste ressources on VR because 1. VR players are a minority and 2. They probably wanted to add as much content as possible to the expansion 'cuz they know this one is going to bring in a lot of new players. Anyways. if they wanna make even more money, they should start selling diapers and pacifiers 'cuz this community is full of babies.
People really need to stop antagonizing people about VR. It's not "wasting resources". They likely realized they had X amount of time to develop this new content and couldn't split dev time and resources between making said content and making it work for VR. "Wasting resources" has a negative context like you're spending dev time on something people won't use.

I did wonder at this. Can FDEv see who is playing the game in VR and make decisions based on that data?
Yes, as ED has a different launcher for VR.

Yes guys, I know several people in my town playing on VR. Don't think for a moment I am un-informed.

It isn't obvious that they sacrificed one feature just to bring in another
I'm not sure that VR is a 'feature' of the game. I see what you mean, though.
it makes sense to delay it,
If it is, in fact, a delay. This is what concerns me: In the past, FD have said that they have an entire separate team dedicated to VR. Yet, even whilst reported in Beta, the FSS only rendered in one eye, the 'dust'/'fog' in asteroid belts turned the game into a slide show during heavy laser fire. And it went out anyway. The asteroid belt situation still persists. What were the VR team doing during that Beta and release?
I'm not telling anyone to like it or suck it up
I know.

Frontier Developments... words that represent pushing the boundaries, to boldly go, to live on the edge. A name change on the cards perhaps?
Now let me see if I can remember... W forwards A Backwards S Strafe Left D Strafe Right E Use MediPack G Swap to Gravity Gun... Oh sorry... That's HalfLife

From Space Simulation to Pew Pew Pew Game...I feel sick:sick:

Anyone want to buy my Valve Index? one careful owner and only used for Elite

Haven't kept up with the rest of this topic. I would assume we can fly down to planets as normal, however exiting the ship (like entering the SRV) will be restricted, the option could be greyed out when running in VR.
That depends of that planet is locked behind the Odyssey permit lock. Sure planets that you can land in horizons you will be able to fly down on, then restart in 2D mode to have a walk around.

About 2.8% of the player base. We can only tell for sure if we get our hands on a Steam Chart, and even then it's an estimate. Steam Charts are a widely accepted source of truth around here.

O7,
🙃

Not a stat on ED, but on steam in general.

My guess is that the numbers in ED are higher, since it was marketed as a VR game.

But what this show is the potential market for VR, and needless to say that its... low.

Frankly I understand why ED are adamant to invest in such a niche technology, its sad to see people go over this, but I'm sure that there will be WAY more new players that don't care about VR.

And frankly, I wonder if its really such a bad thing...
I mean, there has been some comments form the VR crowd.

"If there is no VR in the new update, I wish there was no update at all"
"I don't care if the previous versions of Elite still supports VR, since the new expansion wont have it I will uninstall the game"

I mean, come on guys. I understand that you must somewhat justify that 2500$ kit, and I understand that seeing that less and less games will support it is concerning for you.
But history shows that day one adopters often expose themselves to see the technology being abandoned, its a risk.
The technology simply was not ready yet for mass adoption.

Now, the focus from big game developers has shifted to Raytracing.

Just see the new Unreal Engine. VR was never mentioned even ONCE. Time to move on.

^ the reason why I left these forums in the first place. This is a gaming forum about a game. They are taking away an aspect of said game, that for some, is literally the sole reason they play it. Period. They are understandably upset and this is your response. Why? Because it doesn’t concern your style of play? Because more players will play? Because we are a minority?

i would love to reductio ad absurdum any and all of this “logic” but, unlike you, have no wish to offend.

Lol. I'm sure space legs will be just as much pew pew as the main game, which is a reasonable amount.

It's things like this that pretty much guarantee (that while it can't be confirmed by the community team today because the dev build isn't running in 3D, today) VR support WILL get added before the release date. I'm calling it.
