Everyone crying about no VR implementation... How exactly would VR work on foot?

Google the plethora of FPS style VR games. In fact, let me google that for you.

I think that's the question you gotta ask before demanding to get it done.
Would you still be sitting in your chair and move around with M+KB and only leave head movement bound to the headset?.

Here let me google that for you again.

Or do you ask of FDev to implement a completely new control setup in record time just so a smaller portion of the playerbase is satisfied?

Or use one of the many systems in the multitude of VR FPS games THAT I GOOGLED FOR YOU

I feel that maybe you don't see the reason why people are upset. This isn't an added extra for some people. Elite has always been VR for them. They've bought it from Oculus or whatever. They're being left out. So why is it entitled to not want to be left out? That "small player base" doesn't know Elite unless it's through a HMD.

As a VR player, my disappointment is that the entire update is locked to me. I cannot even sit in my SRV and enjoy an atmospheric world in VR. The new planetary tech (unless it is also implemented in Horizons) is also locked to me. If there was a way to play Odyssey in VR, except for the the walking content, I'd be so much happier. From what I can tell though, there isn't.

This. One million% this. I can get by without the FPS, but I can't play the new expansion at all. Even the stuff that's already in VR. That's just not fair.

What frontier does with their game is their decision. What frontier does with the advance i gave them for future playable expansion is a contract between me and the company. If Frontier cannot creat playable expansions with technology a half a decade old then, at the very least, they should offer a refund to all lifetime pass holders. Arguments over what the company's decision to take teh game are moot. we bought a lifetime pass with the understanding that basic mechanis of the game woould not be taken away. If Frontier no longer wants to offer a VR compatable game, fine. we are a minoritym fine. just refund us what we paid. interest would be nice as well, but at least gimme my $200 back and let me decide if I want to bother with the new, uncompatable game.

For my style of play, spsce legs is more of a novelty. It looks really cool, but I am not an FPS kind of guy. As a VR player, my disappointment is that the entire update is locked to me. I cannot even sit in my SRV and enjoy an atmospheric world in VR. The new planetary tech (unless it is also implemented in Horizons) is also locked to me. If there was a way to play Odyssey in VR, except for the walking content, I'd be so much happier. From what I can tell though, there isn't.

How are people ignorant about how VR really works with a diversity of games so perplexed about this? I don't get it....

There are many, many VR environments where flight and walking are BOTH supported! Did you really believe that as a VR player you were somehow stuck in one place in every game you saw advertised? Fallout? Boneworks? No Man Sky? Etc., etc.? It's really not some miraculous thing where those of us with a VR interface are demanding.

To put yourself in our shoes, perhaps you could take a moment to imagine FDev announcing they were taking out support for joysticks in Odyssey at its launch, forcing you to use a keyboard. Then you'd have a better idea what the VR user is experiencing here.

I just realize by reading this :
Social hubs spread throughout the galaxy give Commanders the ideal place to plan their next move. Form alliances, procure services, and even find expert support in highly coveted Engineers. These public outposts also help you acquire and upgrade weapons and gear to perfect your playing style.

What will spread throughout the galaxy in the next few days thank to the DSSA initiative? Why make a competition for give background for the life on a fleet carrier?

I bet one of the hidden purposes of fleet carrier is to be those social hubs. It justifies why they are persistent and why there is a decommissioning system to avoid having empty hub with no one to meet on board cross the galaxy.

I see a whole lot of antagonistic posts from non-VR users in here for some reason. People aren't "whining" they're incredibly disappointed that their hardware and method of playing for the past 4+ years has been left behind in this new expansion. You wouldn't be happy either if you were in the same position. 100% valid complaints to be aired here for FDEV to see.

Many of us were in exactly the same position when the FSS dropped. For a year and a half I've not played the game that I played almost daily since premium beta.

I also bought into VR for ED. A bit of a waste of money really.

Niche or not, console players are still a minority in Elite's playerbase. Would it be entitlement if they were excluded from the update, and expressed disappointment over that?

You gonna' ask for a refund when they switch the server off too?

I fully agree with you on this one Stuart.
As a Reddit Mod you may also notice in fact that I just removed my post from reddit (that has been hanging in at the first place for the complete day) with 1300 upvotes and counter still running promoting the new DLC...
This news is a huge disappointment for me.

What a wasted opportunity to change it to something like "No VR? Oh, nevermind" :D

I'm not sure if its been answered yet, or will be. But do we know if you can move around INSIDE your ship? Or move around INSIDE stations etc? That to me is what interests me. Being on foot on a barren planet is pretty much the same as being on a barren planet in an SRV. Whether it has new bases or not doesn't really interest me.

I am not sure why my post triggered this response. I've read your reply thrice and I am still confused. 😅

I am a VR player, and I don't have anything against VR games that support both flight and walking...or walking and running...or running and jumping and swimming and simulated duck paddling... 😏

What I am saying is that if Frontier is worried about launching with subpar locomotion support for VR, then they don't have to block ALL VR content at launch. They can just prohibit us from walking in VR until they figure it out. I would prefer that as a stop gap solution over a complete lack of VR support at launch.

I don't know if I appropriately responded to your concerns. In the process of replying to your message I read it twice more and still don't know what you're talking about. 😁

This sounds like a lack of resources decision. The galaxy/system map in VR has never been improved for the last 6 years despite players crying out for it to be more VR friendly. Even simply curving them like the station screens was never implemented.

I was trying to quote you quoting someone else - forums didn't work as expected; apologies for that.
