The thing with VR is that not every ED player is a vr user.... But in my experience the majority of PC VR users DO own ED so there are a few of us
This is the core of the issue. Steam statistics has VR adoption at something like a few percent of the user base. How large is the proportion of the general user base that has ED vs the proportion of the VR user base that has ED? While ED is a good space sim game for an average Steam user, there are many many other games to choose from. For a VR player wanting a space sim game - they will have ED in their library 100% of the time.

Well its either:

VR users are too small a niche to design around, so they looked at the numbers and took the hit.

FD want to simplify ED to fit its other portfolio, which means the crazy years of oddball KS stuff is behind it.

In either case its a matter of waiting for either clarification or the betas to see its final form.
Frontier won't be taking the hit, VR users will.

No criticism from me in the post of the OP, and no intention to hurt.

It is certainly my fault because in a French spirit, a French interpretation of the sentence of the OP below, the fact of specifying that despite that the extension is not free, we have the privilege of obtaining it for free, while this is completely normal.

In the French spirit the meaning of this sentence can be interpreted as a favor that is done to pass holders.

In a French spirit, a more cartesian sentence would be for example:

"The pass holders benefit from all new developments (free or not free) throughout the life of the game" (Without needing to specify that the DLC is not free)

But I forgot that the meaning is expressed here in English, which must be different. :)

"While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes"

Mouais, c'est vraiment chercher la ptite bête. Ils se prennent suffisamment de volées de bois vert comme ça, pas vraiment utile d'en rajouter en jouant sur la sémantique. :)

Especially since the question has been answered many many times by FDEV. Though I admit, after the VR debacle it can be legit to ask if something is in or not if not stipulated black on white. Sad.

Well I spontaneously felt it like that. And you know very well what I mean without looking for the little beast. :)

"While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free."

I can also point out that we don't get it for free since we paid for the pass and all kickstarter backers have allowed this game to see the light of day.

'Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free. '

Being pedantic, but something is not FREE if we have already paid for it.

'Included as part of your original purchase, as formerly agreed upon' would be accurate.

On a lot of ships, half the volume of the ship is taken up by the movement path of the landing gear
That's because they released the game too early and hadn't thought planetary landings through. If you see the Sidewinder pre Horizons, it doesn't look like its standing on the legs of a three legged new born duckling.

Looking forward to Odyssey, but i do Feel that Braben should have been more like Elon Musk, and more ambitious and told his Developers we do this with VR or we don't do it. considering that VR is a flagship feautre of Elite Dangerous, the way the cockpit panels work , the imersion in VR is breathtaking, Elite dangerous is considered one of the best VR experiences in any game, they should build on that at all costs, no compromise. so much so that When i first tried elite dangerous in VR, it was like a completely new game, and i am no longer able to play it with flat screen, VR to me and so many others is the biggest DLC upgrade from Horizons, it gave us a form of space legs with the camera suite you can move around the stations and the outside of your ship albeit limited, but it is certainly an upgrade from horizons, a new Era for most, going back to flat screen will be like going back to elite dangerous base edition. So i understand the dissapointment of the VR community as i am equally dissapointed, Imagine if Frontiers message yesterday was the positive one of saying guess what guys, odyssey is going to be VR compatible from launch, even if it means we launch it a few months later, not only that but you will be able to walk around inside your ships and we will continue to add more stuff to the game as time goes on. Wow, the community would be All in, and money would be thrown at Frontier. I think they dropped the ball here. Anyways just my opinion , I will continue to support Frontier as I love this game and I hope that they add VR as soon as possible and that it doesnt get put on a back burner.

I expect one will turn up, but will those who decried open letters be part of it I wonder?
For me at least it depends how it's worded (tho I will sign if I agree personally)

IF it claims.to speak for the whole ED community and that everyone wants VR it will be derided (and rightfully so) but it's not a huge stretch to think the vast majority of the VR community will be hugely dissapointed at it being dropped.

The difference between the last open letter and a potential VR one is vr users are literally not getting access to the game. Imo ED on a screen Is a different game entirely to ED in VR. As a game I have always felt ED was a bit shallow, bit as a VR experience it more than makes up for it and it papers over the cracks .

All that said I was (hopefully obviously) joking a bit. My gut feeling is most "content creators" don't play in VR so I doubt they will care much anyway

As FD have already acknowledged the VR issue, and have repeatedly told us that they are reading all the feedback, I personally think an open letter is a waste of time. As they usually are. :)

All we need to to is wait. Maybe with some fingers crossed...
