I've said this elsewhere in this thread, but the VR players aren't quite the undead*, we are protesting in the forum in the hope we can sway Frontier to include VR in odyssey.

*undead being defined as not played the game in ages but still rattling around the forums having a whinge and a moan.
At no point did I indicate VR players being 'undead' (being one myself, think about it 🤣)
I completely approve of protesting - my first post once it was formally announced was expressing disappointment!

Yep, that's how I define 'undead' too (y)

Unless PS5 makes VR mainstream, I can't honestly see joe public go out, buy a top end PC, GPU and headset, find the space to set it up because the cost of entry is still far too high.
Wouldn't take every Tom Richard and Harry to buy a top end PC to make VR mainstream...

...With time headsets, and computers specifications improve & prices drop. Furthermore, many of the All in One headsets like oculus quest are getting more and more powerful, Qualcomm, producer of most mobile devices CPU's has unveiled their next-gen CPU, and there is also the proliferation of cloud-based streaming virtual PC's like shadow PC, GeForce Now etc. To a console owner who is used to have to pay a subscription fee to access the internet / online gaming to their console provider may find a £300PC/laptop + a small recurring subscription to a virtual computing host acceptable.

Dreams has just put VR into Beta. A sign that a first party developer is investing in it going forward. They wouldn't do that if there wasn't the expectation of continued VR support. Sony is serious about VR going forward. If that's translates into high adoption rates is anyone's guess but Sony will be pushing it.

The only thing(s) I want to know is with the new surface tech?:-
Rain - Y/N?
Rivers/Oceans - Y/N?
Clouds - Y/N?
Fog - Y/N?
Weather - Y/N?
Storms - Y/N?
Lightening - Y/N?
Aurora - Y/N?
Procedural plant life with sensible nods to science - Y/N?

Surely it can't just be detailed deserts to walk around? Because what was all that fuss year(s) ago about super detailed ice planets, and why was its tech delayed if not for a more encompassing development?

I doubt I'll be fussed about a FPS experience in ED as I very much doubt it'll compete with dedicated FPS experiences/titles already available. So I'm simply interested in if the new planetary tech will at long last bring some overdue bar raising depth and variety to exploration.

One more DCS spam and I'm off, listen to what Growling Sidewinder says about DCS 2.5.6 and how it feels flying in VR.

You just can't fly DCS or any other credible flightsim without VR these days, it makes all the difference and you won't go back once you tried (and are immune to VR sickness). Just the same as with ED for many, including me. VR here makes all the difference. For DCS, they tested the FA-18 with real FA-18 pilots, and IIRC those said the sim basically behaves correctly, but only VR comes close to the real thing and pancake mode is just cumbersome even with headtracking. Look up C.W. "Mover" Lemoine (I think), there are YT videos about the comparison.

I can understand the guys not being able to run VR thinking it's an exclusive | neglible feature made for others, but then, such stances tend to remind me of the Evil Prince from Shrek 1: "Some of you may die, but that's a price I'm willing to pay". Nice. Losing VR support in ED is a major thing and IIRC unprecedented, a huge step back and just saddening. YMMV.

O7,
🙃

I hope ps5 does make VR mainstream. I can think of a few non game uses for VR technology. Imagine a Virtual classroom where people can be educated in a classroom by a real teacher from home in VR. Schools would require significantly less funding and school shootings would be gone. Thats just one application but im sure more informed persons could change the world with ideas like this

Well the headsets are getting lighter and losing the wires. I could wear my CV1 for hours, no problem. As for the price, it's new technology. In just a few short years things have changed a lot. It will only get better.
Biggest problem for me with VR in ED is lack of sight on keyboard and controllers etc. It's enough to drive me back to using an EdTracker instead...

Plus I find the reduced graphical fidelity (compared to a monitor) annoying at times too...

Hmm, yeah, as sucky as it is for VR users that Odyssey isn't going to be supported at launch (and I hope they get what they want), I don't see VR going as fully mainstream as its biggest proponents would have us believe. I think it's here to stay, 100%, don't get me wrong, but I don't casual Joe Public is going to be exclusively playing games in VR any time soon.

I'm not a tech-head but I'm fairly au fait with technology and have been playing one of the biggest VR-friendly games since 2014, I've tried it in VR and thought it was super-cool but I have zero interest in getting a VR headset/HOTAS for it. Cutting myself off from the rest of the world, my partner, my surroundings, is not practical or appealing to me. I do SEE the appeal. But it's not for me. I know that sounds like a judgement, it's not, everyone's situation is different, everyone has people and situations around them tolerant of different things, and I'm excited for anyone who plays it in VR and loves it, and I hope Odyssey comes to VR in the end.

But I think the fact of it being visually and practically isolating is going to slightly dampen its appeal to the vanilla family audience. I think it will stay mainly (not exclusively) the preserve of younger people living a "gamery" lifestyle and the kind of 30+ person who has a whole actual room dedicated to games. Which is still a pretty small percentage of the general audience. Optimistically, it might get to 30% penetration in a few years, is my guess. Could be completely wrong. Maybe when the price comes down, more people will have a basic one that they use only from time-to-time, or some kind of direct neural link comes along that allows us to play games overlaid on our visual field or something without hiding outselves away, hah!
