I still destroy every single MKIV I see in Solo... Hahaha (evil laugh with pinky to mouth).

Just you wait, we get space legs and EVA and I’m blowing the hatch off one of those and stealing it, just try and stop me 😈 Grand Theft Dangerous ELITE...
The Cobra Mk IV is why we may never have ship theft.

As a long time Mk IV user I still rate it one of the best ships in the game (really, not joking) - mine's engineered to the nines and it's a tight pick between it and the Python for which I enjoy the most. Making it available as a pre-order again for Odyssey for all platforms would give those who missed out on it before a fair chance at getting it, without it really hurting folks like me who have it already.

Is this the point that we start campaigning again for the Cobra MkIV to be made available to PS4 commanders?
I say we start with an Open letter from notable players, youtubers and social media types; contact Eurogamer to see if they want to run an article (maybe the broader issue around platform locked exclusives), and change all our avatars and sigs to something bold (like the blue Arx people did).

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Are we to start spamming every thread going DEMANDING the Cobra MkIV?
That seems to be the tactic that the PC commanders employed to get the Fleet carrier details changed and are currently doing because they won’t initially be able to do FPS in VR on a planet when Odyssey launches.

note: this is a sarcastic post. I am not inciting rebellion because the game developers haven’t done what we demanded

Ah, so good to see this wonderful thread friend of mine!

To confirm, I have been destroying ALL the Cobra MKIV’s I see. If we can’t have them, then neither can the NPC’s... hahahaha

hahahahaha ha.... Cough

Um... can we have this ship now?!?!??

But FDev could allow ship theft, yet be careful on the "ownership" to not rile up the "exclusitivity agreement"*, especially with space legs confirmed.

For example:
  • allow FPS-legs boarding actions, and taking control of a ship this way
  • for PS4 it would mean boarding an NPC ship as no players have it obviously
  • you can now fly / outfit / store this captured Cobra MK4
  • if destroyed there is no rebuy (unless you are a LEP or intrinsic MK4 owner who could buy one normally). Any upgrades, engineering, etc is all lost: afterall you dont own it
Which would give a huge risk-reward to flying one (especially engineering it), and would allow any platform's players who dont normally qualify to fly one.

I'd be down for that, and would even make owning one more exciting than a regular ship - like properly Dangerous

* "unfairly" exclusive to everyone but PS4 players

Easily abused. I could simply give all my friends a Cobra Mk IV to order.

To be quite honest I'm already seeing an illicit ship-selling service for real money here.

It's not going to happen.

Easily remedied, the Cobra MK IV for the Playstation 5 and the discontinued support of the Playstation 4, that way all platforms will have the ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with each other and support the game fully, thus a great gameplay 'Ship theft' addition could become a reality, but...
Remember that the ships and their modules are ID'd and traceable, that means that the only thing you could do with a stolen ship is a 'crimejob' Murder, Assassination, perhaps a bit of Piracy but soon enough you'd have to dump it, if you can sell it 'somewhere' it would be for peanuts and you might get turned in by some unscroupulous double crossin double crosser anyway, so it would just be added gameplay not financial abuse... no real money here!

I think that that may actually be the point of ship theft though.
It is your ship that someone else is flying.
It might / might not be classified as 'stolen' so authorities and other commanders could hunt it down, and if destroyed, then the commander flying it has to revert back to the stock sidewinder.
You would need to make sure theft can only happen where the losing commander wouldn't be without a ship but anywhere with a shipyard might be s good start.

With the different platforms exclusive to each other, it can be 100% guaranteed that any Cobra MkIV is NPC owned.

I doubt Frontier will ever go down that route.
Sony would want compatibility between PS4 and PS5 for existing games whilst the main user base transitions across to the new console.
The extension of that argument would also be Frontier stopping support for Xbox S and a various PC graphics cards. - I don't see Frontier ever doing that.

Mate. You underestimate the money people in MMOs pay on the grey/black market to get access to things they shouldn't have. Trust me, it won't happen.

The only way any gaming system can be implemented with zero exploitable features is to not implement it at all.

With the PS5 being claimed to be a hundred times faster than the PS4 and that there are (only) some 20k players of Elite on all platforms and the PS4 being 'not one of the better' platforms (elephant butt leather) it wouldn't surprise me, but then, I only said it was easily remedied, I didn't say it would happen or even be embraced by those players with the PS4... hell, my only Sony product is a PS3... and that was bought used.
But if the 'Next era' stuff is heavy duty then you gotta move with the times!

With the concept art showing taxi services it could be that the losing commander has to make her/his own way to a Shipyard. that could be considered gameplay, he/she could also pick a data delivery mission or two for the journey too.
