ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

Quite honestly, I do not know why people are so complaining about the lack of VR in Odyssey. FDev know many people want it, for many people it makes the game for them and I am really looking forward to being able to use it to add to the Elite Universe.

I am quite sure they will do it if it is possible, after all they have already done it so they must have good reasons for not being able to do it, perhaps technical or perhaps hardware related.

Agreed, they don't have the best track record for delivering, but they know. Let's wait and ask for things that, perhaps, they don't know.

Have patience. Wait until it is actually released before all this.

It is pretty unlikely scenario as the PC games market remains healthy despite consoles having been around for years. The deal breakers for me are around gameplay. Poorly thought out play options despite the flashiest graphics and sound are a waste of time IMHO. I played the original Elite for hours, wire frame graphics and tinny 8 bit sound and loved it. What I have now is streets ahead.
No arguments from me..... Speccy player here before migrating to A500 (tho played on mates BBC 1st).
Perhaps VR is a double edged sword . Had I never played in VR I would have bought and enjoyed Forza , Forza horizons and would likely be looking forward to ED odyssey.
But going from VR to flat screen now is as attractive to me as going from 4k 70 inch to black and white 14inch tv
(Even that is not directly comparable as that is just a loss of eyecandy. Loss of VR is not about eyecandy.)

I think the wording in Tim's announcement makes it quite clear: While they are totally not against it, they would have to make compromises on release. They don't want compromises, I don't want compromises. So what's so difficult to understand about it or why this endless debating...
He also didn't say never but doesn't want to make promises which possibly can't be hold in the end. I very much appreciate this attitude btw.

They said the same for psvr and for other features they abandoned. FD has lost credibility. Besides, not having VR at launch is a BIG compromise in itself already. Just basic rendering without controller support would not be perceived as a compromise.

psvr wasn't promised and then abandoned though, it seems they couldn't make it work to the required quality (paraphrasing Ed I think it was, on livestreams).

How so? Quite the opposite. You can only lose credibility if you promise something which you then don't deliver. No promise has been made in this case.

They lost credibility after delays, dumbed down features, and marketing jargon. And inability to reliably support a core feature at launch.

technical inability of the developers then. They live off the legacy of the devs who made the base game. Don't even know if they are still in the team.

I didn't buy Elite for space legs or any kind of FPS combat
I bought it to 'fly' space ships as well, but way back before release, David Braben did say that it was intended for ED to expand to enable getting out of the seat.

I think, if done well, it will add value.

However, Odyssey does not introduce 'Space Legs', as walking on planets isn't a Space Walk. My resistance to being pedantic has all but failed me, sorry.

That's the wrong question, of course it would work! It only wouldn't make sense to use it if they remove free looking around (but that would be truly old-school - even for me :p). So the question should be something along these lines...
Well you know, we thought that too about VR support :>. And to follow with an example, previous X games supported track ir while X4 doesn't so... don't be so sure! ;-)

Am just kidding btw. though lack of TrackIR in X4 is a fact. I've seen it mentioned on the X4 thread a few times.

Technically FD have never ever promised anything so by that yardstick they can never ever do anything wrong. When you look back FD are very good at explaining what they are going to do to sell packages but if you take them literally nothing is ever promised...

I'd recommend a cheap trackir clone using a ps3eye camera
That's what I used a few years ago. I used it with a device called a Delan Clip. They only cost about £10 in 2014. Now they cost £50, so I'd recommend looking up some circuits and doing some soldering.

The cool thing that you can do with Face TrackNoIR software (well you could back then,so I assume that you still can), is that there is an eye tracking option. You need your face to be adequately lit for your web cam to detect your motion, but it actually works really well.

On top of that, there is a device called ED Tracker, that was invented (and is now sold) by Brumster, a member of these forums. It works using gyroscopes and I translates movement with a little less latency than LED devices. For some people, this may not be noticeable, but it might preferable for some players. It's also physically smaller and neater, and the set up is less fiddly.

I think I would probably go and buy a console instead. I did consider getting a console to play ED, but the general consensus was PC was a better experience.
I watched 'The Road To PS5'. I'm not a PC snob, and I think this up's the ante considerably. I was very very impressed with what I saw and heard. I think it could actually tip the scales (PC vs Console). Good on you Sony, hopefully we'll see less greed from the likes of Nvidia et. al.; now the competition is hot.

If I can get a better gaming experience from a box that doesn't have to be optimised by developers for every possible hardware configuration, and has VR; I'm all over it. My PC can be freed up for recording music.
