Do i gain reputation to federation or empire if i sell exploration data to a minor faction thats aligned with fed or imps?
Empire and Federation REP is earned via Mission Boards (regular and passenger) because that's how Emp/Fed Navy Rank is earned. It can only be increased via missions. Minor faction REP does go up with Cartographics data sold to them (station-controlling minor faction only). The answer is no, you gain faction rep, but not superpower rep.
There are two types of rep for Federation and Empire.
One type gives you a scale of 0% to 100%. That goes up when you do anything for the local associated controlling faction, like bounty hunting, trading, selling astronomical data, etc. It doesn't seem to count for much.
The second type is the rep you get for the rankings, which increases your rank when you do missions for any of the associated factions. That's the rep you need for buying the special ships and getting other special privileges. It only comes from completed missions.
Indirectly only.So selling Exp data does "NOT" help with ranks to unlock systems/ships?

INF is BGS only, so extra +'s there won't move either navy rank. REP is what you want, even if for the local minor faction. But like Ashnak, I don't know if navy rank increases faster by taking the extra REP +'s (if offered). What I do not know, however, is how those high reward missions translate into superpower rank progress, and which reward option you should choose to maximize your superpower rank progress.
