Since the original Elite planet names were made up of two-letter blocks, pronouncing planet names of that era as those distinct blocks makes some sense.

Lah-veh
Di-soe
Lee-ess-ti
Ri-ed-quat
Reh-or-teh

It gives fairly odd pronunciations for most of them, though.

Maybe I've had to spend time having to browse though countless saccharine engagement, wedding and anniversary cards since there's always some derivation of 'love is a rare thing' everywhere. I'm assuming this is a play in words based on that.

Maybe there's another way of reading it but I'm not seeing it.

I didn't know the phrase (at least, it hadn't come to mind)

So, Love/Lave - single syllable -

That means I win. Thanks.

It's Lave, as in Rave - suck it punks.

When Elite had its first wave of popularity at my school in '84 many of us initially pronounced Lave as "lar-vay" or even "lar-way", probably because some of us were studying Latin at the time and Lave has a sort of Latinate look to it. When I heard non-scholars talking about Elite (often on the bus home; the game was that popular) and pronouncing it "layv" the simplicity of it made more sense and it stuck. By the time the Spectrum and C64 versions came out a year later I don't recall anyone at school still using the faux-Latin pronunciation.

Certainly by the time Lave Radio came out with their pronunciation I wouldn't have expected to hear it said any other way.

Although unconnected in any way other than spelling, and so not really authoritative, the archaic Middle English verb "lave" (to wash) is also pronounced to rhyme with "shave". More authoritatively, this is also the pronunciation used in all of the official Elite: Dangerous audiobooks, or at least in those that I've listened to.

ISTR there was a time they were insisting on pronouncing it "Urinous", presumably on the assumption that it had poor bladder control.

How are we ever to find Raxxla when you have to reach Triple Elite and pronounce all the Old Worlds correctly in an aural test administered by Dark Wheel examiners sitting in shadow?

This conundrum most certainly needs sorting.
