Carrier Exploration Discussion

Everything has changed.
My exploraconda is now pretty much mothballed after 1 million ly.
My aspx (Asp to mouth) is now my main vessel. It turns so nicely.
As I sit at work, I log in and jump.
I stop and smell the roses! This is the best part. I used to get to a location as fast as I could and then I could start exploring. Now its all about the journey, as there is no destination.
If tritium mining can be a viable option to refuel, I will be all good with FCs.

I’m currently 1.5kLY out of the bubble alone with my carrier. I jump the carrier 500ly, explored around, a bit of mining and then jump again. I’ve found that I don’t really need a long distance explorer ship so thinking of going back to the bubble and picking up something with just straightline in-system speed - Mamba? This would then be the local area explorer ship - for interesting things - and also Icy rings!

I also brought along 48t of Lavian Brandy for strictly medicinal purposes :)
I recently built an ExploraMamba just to use for short trips near the Bubble to see various sights (Veil Nebula West, Robin's Egg Nebula) during breaks from mining and working on my final Elite (combat). Lots of fun to fly. https://s.orbis.zone/7VUs

Here's how mine went....loaded carrier with tritium...not just the measly tank...but 22K worth in the "market"...shuttled painfully 720t at a time in a cutter...get my DBX, Conda, and eagle loaded...with me occupying the cutter fully loaded with another 720t, sitting in the hanger (correct me if I'm wrong, but it's the only way I seen to refuel without mining after each jump?) I set my first jump system ....waited the 15 minutes...no warnings no ship is about to jump message...nada (all this worked fine in beta) I go to the Galmap..it shows me having made the jump...ok...fine I say...no biggie..we'll jump again...another 500ly jump...this time I stayed on the pad...still nothing...galmap now said I was 1000ly from my initial position....still no indication I had made either jump....soooooo...I launch the cutter, thinking to myself, I will go to SC to use the great blue blob screen...as soon as I launch away from the carrier...I get to watch my carrier jump not just the first 500ly, but BOTH at once...it made a 1000ly jump...and i was sitting in my cutter watching it go...with video artifacts..double..triple images of the carrier...landing lights flashing no where near the carrier...and poof it was gone...yah par for the course...AND they have borked up the Galmap filters to boot.....wonderful experience as always with this @#^%$&*(

EDIT......BUT...it only used 52% fuel to jump the 1000ly...so i guess there is that....they'll probably ban me now for using a $%^&#@(*& exploit......just wonderful
Similar thing happened to me _ twice. Not such long distances though so I soon caught up with it.

At first I looked at my wallet and thought, nope can't afford one. Six years of ELITE doing all sorts and a balance of just over 4B will not cut it.
I then read how some of you guys, as explorers(like myself) , will utilise the FC in the black and thought "I want one !!!" 😂

I HATE mining, but spent many hours mining LTDs, and made over 10BCrs just for the carrier(6.5B to buy it+all services and the rest for service charge over a few years)
I had extra cash so went to a cheap Trit selling system, 4000 per t , and offered 60000 per t for 10000 units. Went to make Tea(what some call Dinner in the UK :D ) and came back 2 hours later and my carrier had 10kt of Trit fuel , woohoo 👍

On a related note, next week I will be going on Operation Milk Top(taking my FC) with the one and only Nutter --->>> MILK TOP

The FC still needs a lot of bug fixes, QoL improvements and something about refueling it must change, else I love it. All my stuff is now on HMS Purple Dog :)

Now it’ll also finally make sense to have ships with “Faster Boot Sequence” engineering on the FSD instead of the old mandatory “Increased Range”. With FCs comes new ways of thinking, and that is perhaps the best part of it. New way of thinking = new life to the game.

Ok, now that is Gold Info I never thought of, thanks :)

What's the benefit - it only helps if your FSD starts off in a powered down state doesn't it?

More power for other stuff when it's not in use, like weapons maybe. But yeah, I'd rather other workarounds and range isn't my top priority usually out in the black anyway, but it is par for the course for most. I prefer the FSD powered and on high priority, if given the opportunity. YMMV Work in Progress

The carrier has changed the way I now look at exploring..
Jump the Carrier to a location, then fully scan the system and surrounding ones, before deciding where to jump to next.
This is what I'm currently using, good for scanning systems and for canyon running, i run in VR, so this ship is perfect to fly, I can even use the Speed Eagle if required (as its on the carrier ready to go)

Lately my main exploration ship has still been the Orca. However, with the carrier, I've spent a lot more time in my I-Eagle lately. For flying around in-system, down on planets, and even several jumps out in a radius around the carrier, the Eagle is quick and fun, and its shortcomings don't come into play the way they would on a long exploration journey by itself.

What a pretty thing it is, you actually inspired me.. I did build one in the past and then I said "I am not gonna fly this thing anyways", and sold it. Now though, with the Zodiac I think I am going to build one again. After reading your post I just quickly cranked this one https://s.orbis.zone/7gt9 and realized - darn thing can jump almost 50Ly on dry tanks. I will change the name though, just nothing better came to mind now :)

Have to say, it's a game-changer for me.

I'm basically doing an Exploration/Mining Combo while primarily on an Exploration Mission with two key Objectives :
  • discover an NSP in the Arcadian Stream
  • discover a Green Gas Giant

So I've placed my Carrier into a pristine area and defined a 100LY AOR all around it.
This gets 100% scanned in order to literally paint a bright circle on the ED-Astro Image of the Explored Galaxy.

(a slow process - but getting there, it's becoming visible already)

Whenever I get tired from Exploring, I switch to Mining. Or combine both, as my Mining Rigs are essentially Exploration/Mining Hybrids.
Most Ships I've converted from "bubble rats" to Carrier Support Vessels, so I now have a very broad selection of Vessels I can do anything in.

As an additional Objective, I seek double Tritium, Painite and LTD Hotspots.
The plan is to slowly fill the Carrier Cargo hold and replace the consumed Tritium from the trip out here.

The Campaign consists of no less than 6 pristine Waypoints, so I'd literally have enough work for a full year easily.
I do plan to move to Colonia to sell, once the Cargo hold is filled with ores and stock back up with Tritium.

Also just today saw the 1st random Traffic docking and saying hello :)
Unexpected 17500LY from SOL.

And IMHO it's nice to take virtually any Ship and just go discover an Earth Like World with it. No more harsh Jumprange limitations or restrictions.

I haven't run out of Tritium in the hold yet but when I do I'll likely be 10s of thousands of light years from the nearest Refinery and I'm already getting a sense that, oddly, FCs are going to make the Galaxy feel bigger rather than smaller. Larger mass, presumably.

I 'fly' and explore with a very small tank (2 jumps max) and no Tritium in cargo hold. My carrier consumes currently only 143t of Tritium for a full jump of 500Ly. What initially started as a test is now well underway: transporting my Colonia fleet to the bubble. After purchasing the carrier I had about 1 Billion cr left that I didn't want to spend for Tritium, so that I would have to fear going short on funds. So the idea was born: moving slowly by exclusively mining on the fly. Meanwhile I'm in the middle between Colonia and the Bubble, everything works surprisingly well, especially finding Tritium hotspots turned out to be much easier than expected. But then I was never 'spoiled' by the Borann triple exploit and don't bother laser mining at all.

I almost exclusively mine in a Cobra Mk4 and even crack the odd core when I'm in the mood (already collected about 300t of various minerals this way, while mining for Tritium in the first place). This is a very personal approach and possibly way to slow for most commanders, but for everyone interested in the adventures of a lone space hermit, have a look at the link in my sig. In that OP you'll also find a link to how it all began, a thread that I shamelessly hijacked (sorry, I just couldn't resist to see a thread where someone was complaining about something that I already had started and what would be impossible to do) until I went over to my own thread. Only few commanders will have the patience to follow this path, so I can perfectly accept to be ignored.

The Cobra Mk IV is an excellent core miner.

:D S

Yeah I’m with you on that one lol . I have never tried it, and that shows how “Increased range” is incorparated in us. But it looks like a lost opportunity really.
Yeah, when faster boot sequence was first shown, it was, and still is, commonly misconstrued as faster charging time. It is intended to be used in combat situations counter the missiles that reboot the FSD.

FCs have completely changed the game for me. They really shine when used by a group and I really hope that Odyssey and whatever follows provides additional support for group, as well as solo, game play.

I am thrilled at being able to change ships and fits based on what I want to do at any given moment. I loved being on DW2 but was definitely tired of my trusty Krait Mk II by the time I got back to civilization.

The other thing I have noticed is that I am much less risk-averse when I explore now. I realize in hindsight that I was becoming more and more cautious the further I progressed in DW2. The accumulation of exploration data and fear of losing my physical progress weighed on me the more that expedition progressed. Living on an FC, though, I don't give a second thought to worrying about rebuys. I find myself taking risks and pushing boundaries that I would not have before FC's became available.

I am the traveller kind of explorer, always was.
Partly cause of a limited game time - especially the major expeditions were only doable with compromises in terms of exploration - but also cause I like to notice movement when traversing our galaxy.

Also I like trading a lot.
One of the most exciting time was the Witch Head IInitiative and the subsequent station repair phase afterwards...
The DSSA Kraut is of course trading Tritium.
I always try to have a decent amount available in case an expedition carrier is coming around and needs a pit stop.
Luckily I like mining, too.

And now with fleet carriers I happily can merge all this.
DSSA Kraut is situated ~15 Kylies from Sol - a perfect range for my play style.
Therefore I am buying mined minerals (and mining them myself of course) which are only available out in the dark, like that myth-enshrouded LowTemperatureDiamonds (Danger! RPG impulse! :D) and carry them back that 15000 Ly to make the bubble shine ;)
And as only a full hold is a good hold I'll bring back some necessities from civilisation - tonnes of beer and weed :)

Not forgetting I like ship-building and theorycrafting them.
So even if I dont get the itch to travel I'm fine tinkering about with my ships - thanks to remote engineering and a well stocked choice of modules. :)

And I actually like the romanticised picture of a "gas station out in the nothingness" where I can life my live self-sustaining.

Finally - and to get btt again ;) - I noticed like others in this thread before (and thanks for the phrase!) that exploration-wise I enjoy "to smell the roses" much more than before.
I think thats because of the leisurely pace I got out here - and well, perhaps also as here arent that many distractions ;)

So for me FCs not just stimulated my exploration interest but all my favourite pastimes in ED 👍
