How many ships can you store?

I seem to remember that the per-dock ship limit per CMDR has risen each time a new ship is added to the game.
40 per commander.
Yes and if you have a shipyard installed, they can also store 40 ships each. There appears to be no limit.
However, if you are in open then you could possibly get blocked if 16 ship land and stay topsides. But only in the same instance.

Give the size of the fleet carriers, are the ships somehow folded into a small cube, or rather stored in a pocket dimension?
If I understand it correctly, a fleet carrier under the hood is a space station with different graphics and some other things bolted on. Code-wise they share a lot of common features so basing FCs on a space station is a very good idea. They are also invulnerable, just like a station.
So in the same way that a space station seems to have infinite space for ships, so does a fleet carrier.
It is also why FCs are persistent across all game modes.
I think they probably use a 3306 version of the car crusher to achieve this.
And maybe Time Lord Tardis technology.

I noticed that when I change ships, the dock opens the roof before showing the new ship, then closes the roof, as if the ship materialized outside the carrier or something. Pretty funny.
42 is the answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. The number 42 also makes sense as a purical derivitive to a finite ship allocation unitary imperative. I think you're on to something here Chimpy...
