Game Discussions Microsoft Flight Simulator

I don't think that will happen. Like Chris Simon said, MSFS was always a flight sim "for the masses" (for sim standards).... I'm fairly certain that this will also be the case with MSFS2020....

I hope so too. I don't mind them having a DCS-level set of options, but I like to press 'E' to start an engine and go a bumbling over pretty scenery.

Love that video clip too. Proper science - although I still don't agree with the spurving-bearing alignments. Probably why it never made it into production.

I'm absolutely dreading msfs2020 heading in to DCS territory. And this would make it a more difficult purchase for me.

Pottering round in something that feels vaguely plane'ish whilst soaking up the excellent eye candy is my idea of perfection. Endlessly twiddling nobs, recombobulating the interleaved discombobulator and reading huge manuals.... not so much.

I can't imagine MS will force this level of complexity on the unwilling. Well.... I sincerely hope not.

True but I'm sure it would be easy to have both. I would be happy for an arcade esq mode like yourself but don't see why it also couldn't have a full sim mode.

Can anyone who plays say anything as to how sim the alpha is oriented? Wondering if it goes all the way or is riding the line.

You can choose the complexity both in instrumentation (literally from "Press E to start the engines" to whole procedures. Most instrupments can be operated by touch, shortcut or left automated) and flight model.
I can't speak much about the flight model, though. Firstly, because technically I am forbidden to ( ) and secondly because it isn't finished. The last Alpha I played (the 2nd one), the full wing dynamics weren't implemented properly, yet, there were problems with rudder sensitivity, etc... although even then it was definitely closer to real physics than the arcade style and generally I found it adequate. Sufficiently challenging, around stall speeds in particular, but not overly twitchy. Wind is really good and crosswind landings are immense fun.

edit: btw. if you go back to the page 21 of this thread, you can read several posts from yours truly about some fist impressions and so on.

Why does microsoft maker of Windows and office think its important that they are in the Games market as well. How come IBM never made any games.

IBM "went under" because they thought that there was still a good future in "big iron" only to see the PC market pull all of that out from under them. If, like M$, they had maintained a broader base (Mainframe, Mini, PC, Software, Consulting and, yes, maybe even games) they might still be a player today. Even when they finally did enter the PC market, it was mostly too little too late. It didn't help them at all, for example, that they chose to depend on Gates for their PC OS.

I have a A2A P-51D that I fly in the old MS flight sim, but lately I've been flying mostly DCS (again a P-51) and chomping at the bit for this new MS flight sim. Come on guys, get 'er done! ;) :D

Looks like a missed opportunity

I never had a C64, but I sure played a lot of flight sims on the Amiga 500.

F-29 Retaliator (my first one)
F-15 Strike Eagle 2 (one of the finest)
Knights of the Sky (my favorite)
Combat Air Patrol (my other favorite)
B-17 Flying Fortress
Mig-29 Fulcrum
Tornado
Birds of Prey (had dozens of modern airplanes)
Gunship
Gunship 2000 (fantastic)

And most likely others, those are just the ones I remember better. Weird as there were a lot more flight sims back then than now,

Given it must be playable on an X-Box, I think there will be definitely an 'arcade' mode.

Hell, I'm pretty sure it will be possible to hop on any real flight as a passenger. In that case, I can very much imagine my non-gamer but full-blown airliner enthusiast friend of mine would pick up a console just to have this feature on TV.

One of the things I hope MFS could bring back is a wide variety of control devices that we once had, when flight sims were in their prime (which is now what - 20 years ago?)
At the moment the number of options one has when looking for a cocpit setup is... regrettable.

And so I appreciate that Thrustmaster seems to be on the run already. Let's hope other manufacturers will catch up.

I mean, how cool would it be if we got a new Force Feedback joysticks and yokes from Microsoft, for example? :)
