Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

This is the greatest and best game in the world...
Tribute

Long time ago, me and my brother Erin here
We was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road
All of a sudden, there shined a Derek Smart
In the middle of the road

And he said
"Make the best game in the world
Or I'll eat your soul"

Well, me and Erin
We looked at each other
And we each said
"Okay"

And we made the first thing
That came to our heads
Just so happened to be
The best game in the world
It was the best game in the world

Look into my eyes
And it's easy to see
One and one make two
Two and one make three
It was fidelity
Once every hundred-thousand years or so
When the sun doth shine
And the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow

Needless to say
Derek was stunned
A whip-crack went his blog post
And the beast was done
He asked us
"Snort
Be you game devs?"
And we said
"Nay
We are but grifters!"
Rock
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah
Ohhh, whoah
Ah-whoah-oh

This is not
The greatest game in the world, no
This is just a tribute
Couldn't remember
The greatest game in the world, no, no
This is a tribute, oh
To the greatest game in the world
Alright
It was the greatest game in the world
Alright
Yeah it was the best damn space sim ever
The greatest game in the world

Ah-rah, dee
Soo-guh-goo-gee-goo-gee
Goo-guh fli-goo gee-goo
Guh fli-goo, ga-goo-buh-dee
Ooh, guh-goo-bee
Ooh-guh-guh-bee-guh-guh-bee
Fli-goo gee-goo
A-fliguh woo-wa mama Fidelity!

And the peculiar thing is this my friends
The game we made on that fateful night
It wasn't actually anything like this game!

“My mama always said kickstarter was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.”

“I'll be back... when I need more money...”

“I'm the king of the worm!”

“Keep your friends close, but your whales closer.”

“You don't understand game development! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could've been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am.”

“To fidelity and not beyond!”

“You're gonna need a bigger budget.”

“If you don't build it, they will fund.”

Indeed it was, but CR promised a lot more than they could actually do. This was his first attempt at biting off more than he could chew, something he took to new heights with Freelancer and has now perfected with SC!
Abso-freakin-lutely. I'm currently banned on the SC forums because I corrected someone regarding Freelancer's development (it was a rather tame post as well, nothing that you couldn't read on the Freelancer wikipedia page.). Synthwave said " we cannot confirm or deny rumors", not realizing that Freelancer's development was well documented.
I swear, I'm getting closer and closer to making a reddit account just to join you guys on the refunds group. (OB, so my refund window sailed years and years ago)

Obviously the 100 star system of old are outdated and dont count anymore.
It used to be much more ! When i backed the project it was to be tens of thousands of procedural generated systems, warranting the exploration and long range ships that are now completely useless. This was brought down to 100 years later when they realized they would actually hand craft them (multiple red flags here: years later, no planning, incompetence..).

As for the project scope and liveliness: I would remind that Jumpgate did exist and was relatively successful for its time, and was made and maintained by a very small team. I would have been perfectly happy with a similar scope of delivery (which is not too far from the initial KS promise, actually), that was an excellent MMOG.
As for SC others have answered for me, it's drifted way too far from the initial scope, the famed proc gen has not happened in 8 years, the magic network code has not happened in 8 years, etc. And no, it doesnt take a decade to code a proper MMOG network stack, or an in-memory distributed cloud storage, for the latter you just pick one and configure it, and bingo it works. I dont believe any of that will ever happen by now.

Forum needs an insightful button instead of just like. We used to use in memory databases in the late 80;s/ early 90's but they went out of fashion for some reason. Catching up with an old colleague to day and his site did use one at one stage so must ask why they stopped. Probably peaking memory prices as it was like gold in cost at one stage.
They key is "cloud" and "distributed". The concepts did exist by the early 90's at IBM (i worked with people who set this up back then) but were only heavily put in practice by Amazon in the late 2000's, and perfected by the likes of Netflix in the last decade. Distributed cloud storage with elastic scaling, and commodity pricing is not so old, and for example EvE does predate all of this by a decade and a half. But when SC started, this was all available and they have no excuse but incompetence.

Path length or execution path length is an old assembler language saying, it means in the context I was using it, end to end response time as a result of all the stuff that has to happen to get there :)
Yeah that's another way to put it. For a real time system or game, this has all to fit inside "frame time", which on server side is usually something like 50ms. It's a very tough limit, and that means having no i/o bound operation or any more networking going on at that point that would hold up the loop. Any slow i/o has to be out of sync with the main loop.

The "verse" only got one incomplete star system. Not much of a "verse" if you ask me.
The term 'verse' was cribbed from a property that only had one (multi star) system, and all the planets in the show were in it. But unlike other Hollywood producers I could mention the producer of that property was able to put loads of interesting content in it. At least that guy had a grasp of physics and didn't put a quasar anywhere near it.

Wow, your talk so much about this game... more than 850 posts since june.
If its already dead, don't waste your time on it. Why spending so much time talking about it ?

Ahhh. The Guardian. Every UO Avatar's home boy back in the day. Good times!

And sadly what you said there is 100% true. That golden age in the industry (when it was new and fiercely innovative on the dev's end) is sadly over.

SotA is 100% proof of that. But at least what's left of the fan base is aware enough to acknowledge what SotA can never be. Why it could never exit its permanent state of arrested development. OTOH, the SC fan base proactively remains fiercely ignorant :(

I'm a stupid Scam of the Avatar "backer". I don't feel any need to refund as my low tier included "official forgiveness for all previously pirated Ultima titles, which for me... were a few... It's not like I had the money anyhow in those days, but since I can afford it now, I might as well throw something. Same reason I picked up a few official Doom copies later in college after pirating my way to it so many times before.

But yeah. Don't ask me about the "game". Suffice it to say that it was my kickstarter vaccine. I've probably backed a grand total of two projects since...

If you knew how much my colleagues in Archaeology and Literature spend talking about dead people and things...

Mind you, they don't feel the need to join the boardgaming society just to correct people's views on poetry.

Defend yes, only when I see something false. Promote no. I come from SC and I am new to ED (bought the game 2 weeks ago).
Welcome Ant.
Unfortunately some folk still play the man and not the ball (as they say in soccer) That was common a few versions of this thread ago and is not welcome in the enlightened version 12. I have many hours in both games, hundreds in fact including ED in glorious VR, if you have VR persevere and give it a go. I also have had a lot of enjoyment out of both. If I may compare them in one way, I like the learning curve of both games it takes hours just to set up your controls and days to work out what is going on. Although my play in SC is currently limited as its faults annoy me after two years of disappointments. Unlike some I hope it succeeds and will continue to try out each new patch to keep in touch and play more in those with increased stability.

Ah "rumours". You should have quoted CR's own words at him then.

This is a lively community. We like doing conversations here. After all, a forum is a social experience. Feel free to try it out.
Yes it's cool discussing. But I wanted to respond to someone that quoted me and this post is 50 posts far away now. Everyone had switched to another topic. I don't really like when someone get back an old post, so I will not do it myself.
I'm afraid this forum is too active and fast for me.
