I'm wondering if the legs reveal was then for LaveCon.

But as I said before, how hard is it to take 34 screenshots and post them 1 per week, and plaster work in progress or post concepts etc? The KS had it right with a pic of the week which acted like a pressure valve and got people talking about the game in a good way.

Evidence suggests however that the material was all ready to go that day, (steam page, media pack ready to go to outlets, overclockers page with different images etc) and a CM confirmed on a livestream the trailer was released early but not weeks early, saying it wasnt the case it was supposed to go out after the carriers release.

Thing is, people seem to be demanding the promised dev diaries etc now. But it's not out until 2021, it will be closer to the time I expect. More likely we might get occasional trailers or images, but like Planet Zoo I think the diaries will be quite close to release.

My personal wish is for a simple yes / no regards features being updated, like CQC, MC, PP etc to save me waiting 8 months for potentially nothing- I don't really care for the new legs at all.

Indeed, and the newsletters that actually contained development news were engaging as well. I suspect that we got the trailer well in advance of when it was intended and there is a marketing plan waiting to be executed, we just haven't hit the appropriate date yet.

Another thing I would note, and it may be entirely coincidental, that all the established ED community managers, Ed, Paige and Will have bailed between Horizons and Odyssey. I accept that is liable to happen when careers are being built, but it's unfortunate.

It's to be released in roughly 7 months time. At least 2 months of beta (FCs had nearly that amount of time, so expect more) before that and at least 2 months of alpha before that. That leaves at best three months. But it's probably in alpha already.

They will have been working on this update for over 2.5 years at release at least. If they don't know what they can implement by now, then the update is in serious trouble. The R&D would have been done before any serious work was started. Sure they maybe some minor features that will not make it, but they will know by now which ones are definite and which ones are tentative for release.

It's a massive update, the biggest they have ever done which will require months of testing to get rid of most of the bugs. You need to think of this as a game release, not just a small update like Fleet Carriers or even 3.3 of beyond.

7 months is not a long time in game development. As I said, if they have no idea what implementable by now, the expansion is in serious trouble.

As to keeping silent, I never said it was wrong, but I just don't agree for the reasons you give as they don't make any sense.

They have a marketing plan and they will stick with it. I'm sure they can show us plenty if they wanted to, but they have a plan to follow to keep people interested, which seems to be working. As soon as interest starts to wane they will release some more information.

You've been here since 2012, you know how tight lipped they are.
I believe if everyone stopped paying FD any attention (whether it's the forums or other social media), the comms strategy would drastically change.
For years there's been absolutely no reason for FD to report anything.
The fan base swoons for weeks on end at the tiniest glimpse of any marketing spiel FD produces.

Well, having every sky be blue would be scientifically accurate, since sky colour is independent of atmospheric composition. The only thing that would vary is the depth or shade, which varies with atmospheric thickness. The sky on Mars is also blue, only darker blue than Earth - except when there's lots of dust up there turning it orange (and on Mars, this is very often the case). I don't know if/how ED is plannig to represent dust or other aerosols. Skies that are green, or bright yellow, or magenta, would defy the laws of physics so I doubt we would see them in ED.

According to that page (no idea if reliable), very thick methane atmospheres might also appear greenish from the surface, but given we're only getting "tenuous" atmospheres, I don't expect to see that.

There does seem to be a bit of variety in sunsets modelled in Elite, which you can see in the colours haloing around atmospheric planets when eclipsing the local star -- blue/purplish sunsets on ammonia worlds, red/orange on earthlikes, white on some others, etc. -- and it might also vary with star class, I dunno.
