You're both right - or wrong.

Simply jumping into a system will resolve the primary star, which will give you the payout (plus first discovery) for the star and anything else in passive detection range (hmmm.... have to check, if I ever come across one, what happens with giant primary stars, where you re-enter and scoop outside of what would actually be passive detection range...).The payout for the star will be the base value of the star plus a percentage (IIRC on the order of 10%) of the system's scan value - negligible in case of the ususal collection of ice marbles, but can be significant for systems with multiple terraformables.

Honking will then resolve any other star or star-like body in the system, that includes any orbiting brown dwarfs and similar crap in addition to the secondary and further stars. You can check that by running e.g. Elite Observatory, which will, after the honk, for example announce any wide rings among ringed brown dwarfs orbiting the secondary.

So:
  • not honking makes you some money
  • honking can make you a little more money in system with multiple stars or star like bodies
  • but the real money is in FSS and DSS
So, I'm actually right, honking will net you money. He said it wouldn't. I just sold 201k worth of honks after 28 jumps. Took the same route back and didn't honk. About 9k worth of passive scanning. Go figure.
Yes, FSS AND DSS IS WHERE THE BIG BUCKS COME IN!

Thanks for all the encouragement, advice and tips... much appreciated. Seems it's a really complicated game if you guys can't agree :)

I'm currently 1,800ly out. I'm not looking to make distance as there is no time limit so currently when I enter a system I map everything from metal and above unless it's been mapped before or is an insane distance away which is rare. I ignore rocks and ice. I will map ELW and stuff even if it's been mapped before but as I say it's very rare to find that.

Terraformable High Metal planets make 1.9 million I think even if the star has already been discovered but the planet not.

I know it's probably not an optimum use of my time, should just map the high value planets but as I say there isn't a time limit.

I was a bit bored as a trader in ED shuffling back and forth between stations to make profit, now I jump into a system and think... what is there? Sometimes I'm disappointed like one body no planets and sometimes I'm like wow nobody has seen these before?

Quick question I only just discovered you can scan planet rings. It produced hotspots for stuff that can be mined. I didn't bring a mining gun thing. Am I missing out? Does it take cargo space if you mine it?

You can mine stuff not in a hotspot (and in asteroid fields), a hotspot just means there should be more of that thing there. You can also mine without having scanned the ring.

I'd say no, but if you want stuff for synthesis for emergencies or such, then yes.

Does it take cargo space if you mine it?
Yes. You need a refinery at a minimum (you can pick up raw materials without a refinery, like other materials they don't take cargo space) to convert what you scoop from mining the rock into actual cargo. You can scoop manually if you really want to, but you probably would want a collector limpet controller to get limpets to pick the bits up for you, and possibly a prospector limpet controller to get a limpet to tell you what's there and increase the yield. Oh, and limpets for them to control, of course, which take up cargo space to start with.

Mining is the process of converting limpets into commodities, you start with a hold full of just limpets and end with a hold full of more profitable stuff. Hopefully.

Then there's the lasers. On top of that there's (optionally) abrasion blasters for surface chunks, something else for sub-surface thingies, and the asteroid-blowey-up core wotsit.

Not to mention abrasion blasters, sub-surface thingies, and the asteroid-blowey-up core wotsit, which takes up even more slots.

Yes not really looked at mining so not sure what "synethesis" is but I seem to have managed so far without it. I know I am only scratching the surface of this game but hopefully I can learn more.

Must say I do get a kick out of going into a system with no tag on the Star or even if there is a tag on the Star then doing FSS and showing planetary bodies that hadn't been discovered. It's kinda exciting to see what's there. Am I being stupid about an online game?

I don't have any of those things :}

Synthesis isn't actually something to do with mining, it's where you want to top up your life support, or boost one FSD jump, or make more limpets, for example. Check your right hand panel, somewhere in there.

It's related to mining, however, because the raw materials you need to perform the synthesis often (always?) are obtained by mining, and since they don't in themselves take up any cargo space, you can stock up on a pile of them and take them exploring.

The only other place I've seen the synthesis raw materials is from surface deposits when driving about in a SRV

Secondly, yes, yes it does.
It won't make you rich. I've made a million just making a habit to honk every system I jump in, in the bubble over the course of a few weeks, dep how often you jump.
It's easy money for honking. Pays for fuel.

Please don't edit my posts so skew the meaning so as to bolster your argument. I specifically said "... just honking does not make money, not really, ... " - Editing out the "not really" totally misconstrues my point that the return on "just honking" is minimal.

Don't do it, it is rude.

May I suggest seen as he is out so far...that he attempt the professor palin unlock namely 5000 light years or more out of centre of bubble. Scanning as he/she is till done and scoot back honking till at the bubble then hand in asap.
Then utube mining meta and go build one and get rich not as quickly as egg noggers did.

An engineered ship kind of doesn't really matter out in the black. An engineered ship will only speed up scanning planets and shorten the amount of time to get back to the bubble. But when exploring, engineered ships kind of just don't really matter.

I don't have any of those things :}

Seems that they are necessary if mining is what you wish to do.

First, welcome, I'm a newb too :D

If you are having fun, you aren't doing anything wrong. The real issue is, we've all volunteered to learn how to be astronauts, essentially. this game has a steep learning curve and, very very little in it is obvious or intuitive based on the control layout and its own rules for how to do stuff. Plus it works across 3 different gaming platforms so half of us cannot give the other half direct advice on buttons et al.

What I might say you can get from this thread is that, if you want to mine, you must outfit your ship for mining and little else, WHILE YOU ARE MINING.

Don't expect to go head to head with pirates or bounties if youre going out to mine; you cannot combine both functions 24/7 even on some of the larger ships, seems to me. If anything, equip your ship to resist and evade.

Once you are done mining for that day, go back to base [pick a convenient one that has a materials merchant and good missions for yourself in case you need quick repair cash], and redo your modules for other favorite things. Or grab a small ship [such as the Cobra, Asp or Diamondback] and use that one exclusively for mining, and merely swap your combat/explorer out when you fancy it. Then you won't have to worry about anything like, say, forgetting to swap a crucial combat module out before heading into dangerous space again.

Find the mining equipment combo that suits you. Go back, change things out and try until you are pleased.

Keep an eye on the health of your hull and modules. Given as percentage. I am no expert but I believe modules start to become less reliable after 80 % though they can certainly last much longer. Minor errors and experimentation add up and unless you've brought the gear to fix it, best you keep an eye on it.

I'm about 3k out at the moment. Not a lot I know but for a first trip it's a long way. I'm making short jumps to GFA planets, scanning and mapping if terraformable. Well over 100 jumps back to the bubble.

Where should I sell the data I have collected? Elvira Martuuk? I already have Felicity unlocked to Grade 4 without even any effort. just a couple of hours outside the bubble.

Should I just carry on to 5K since I'm half way there already? Hull is fine... for some reason Docking computer dropped to about 80% so I took it offline

Thanks for the help

Depending which way you went, there's an outpost at Omega Sector VE-Q b5-15, which is a little over 5kly from the bubble. Remember it's 5kly away from your start, not 5kly travelled, which you need. There's also one slightly closer, at Trifid Sector IR-W d1-52, but no sure if that will be more than 5kly from wherever you started.

Either is completely up to you. Selling exploration data is a good way to gain REP with a minor faction, so if you have any you want to rep up with, use it there. If you want to lay a foundation for another Engineer, you could go to Almagest and sell it to gain favour with the Sirius Corporation. That might give you the Sirius permit, which in turn you'll need later on to gain access to an Engineer who may then, in due course, direct you to Professor Palin (who requires the 5 kly).

Otherwise, if you don't have anything better in mind, you could also check in the latest "Standing Orders" post in the Turning The Wheel thread and sell it wherever it would do most good for The Dark Wheel's cause at the moment.

Just keep in mind that a lot of those systems (Almagest or any other Sirius Corporation owned systems) and also the systems with TDW activity usually have a lot of player traffic, which also attracts certain bottom feeders, so be careful there if you fly in Open. If you die, you lose all your exploration data. If you want to fly in open, there are also player groups that will try to provide a guard, but I have no idea how effective these would be.

Triffid sounds like my kinda place lol. I've gone over to the left and up and down a bit from the start system. I am currently at PHYLUR -TS-D3 26 I think

I haven't really got my around the faction stuff yet. There is so much to this game that I need to learn and without an instruction manual.
