The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Keys to the Carrier (18th - 26th July 3306)

With about two and a half days left before the end of the race we've seen a flurry of new activity in the Unlimted class.

Cmdr Sulu is sticking with the Eagle (for now) and continues (via many MANY attempts) to chip away at the gap between himself and Edelgard Von Rhein, successfully knocking another 10 seconds of his time.

Meanwhile Bob Dubrovnik puts the Type-9 Heavy (about which he has nothing polite to say) through its paces and, despite its woeful key scooping ability, manages to complete a run in just over half an hour. Wonder stuff indeed!

Then in a shake up to the podium, Sgurr leaps straight into the fray with his Sidewinder "Nothing To See Here", just managing to break the 18 minute barrier and snatch 2nd place away from Captain-MD. When asked to comment he said "gotta love long range beams". Awesome flying sir!

And finally, in a Federal Corvette named "Calypso", Cmdr Crotalus posts a time faster than a flippin' Mamba! With a mid 22 minute run he takes 8th place from Azzie's Sidewinder by (literally) the smallest of margins. What an absolute loon!

At the last count the KEYS CUT WHILE-U-WAIT was now carrying nearly 500 Guardian keys.
"All that tasty cargo!"

I got bang on 20m in the Courier (having given up, again, on the hauler :D), then managed a Cutter run in a little over 24m. Scooping in the Cutter is really easy now - I just wait for the key to appear and flip it out. I had more trouble scooping the keys back up when I dropped them at the Carrier!

Boy oh boy, you folks have really been fighting for this one!

So the big news since this morning is that Cmdr Sgurr has not only improved his Sidewinder time to now be 3 seconds faster than Captain-MD's Imperial Eagle but he's also switched to an Imperial Courier ("Vision Thing") which has broken the 16 minute barrier for only the second time in the race, beating Shaye's Viper by over 30 seconds and claiming the number one spot! When asked to comment he replied "missiles rock! thanks Captain-MD!". And, as if that wasn't enough, he's also entered into the Regulation "Hauler" class, breaking the 20 minute barrier for only the second time in the race, and has beaten Captain-MD's "Hauler" by nearly 40 seconds and claimed that number one spot too! With only a day left to go Sgurr is suddenly the person to beat!

Elsewhere, in Unlimited class, Sulu has triumphed over the 19 minute barrier with his twin-rail powered Jack Russel Sidewinder, Edelgard's improved Toya's time by around 30 seconds and also done a sub-20 minute run in a Vulture (a Vulture! In a Buckyball Race?!?!) and Dr.Nagi has saved his pride, made his Orca go faster than Crank's Cutter and also (just for lulz) joined Crotalus in trying out the Corvette with a very respectable sub-30 minute time.

And in Regulation class Edelgard has broken through to the 20's (by 1 second) and Crank Larson's joined the fray (and the "we can't think of a name for our Hauler" club) and taken 5th place from Bob Dubrovnik with a time of 21m 16s.

We've now collected over 500 Guardian Keys, that's about 170 separate attempts at the race!

What time does it finish tomorrow? I'm tempted to give it another couple of shots in my improved Courier (and test the missiles :)), but I'm in Moriosong and won't have a chance to head back out to the Guardian area until after that race tomorrow. Which will be interesting, as I haven't done much SRV preparation for that beyond the first two corners... Though I did scout it out a few more times from the air.

Never mind... Went back and read the OP. Midnight tomorrow should work fine.

Wow, almost 6 mins to the first. Sounds like I still have many things to tweak. If I only knew which else than my flying skills.
Well, for one it looks like the fastest way to activate the beacons is with thermal missile damage. Check out Captain-MD's twitch stream where he talks about his Eagle's loadout and then watch the run to see just how effective it can be ..

Edit: sorry, that link no longer seems to go to the right place, you'll have to dig around on his twitch channel a bit I guess.

As well as what Alex said also: find beacons close to the star, minimise the number of jumps between them with route/ship/loadout/synthesis, there are faster/slower ways to use the missiles, and if you haven't already watch Shaye's and AkenBosch's examples of how to supecruise quickly:

I spent more time planning than actually flying for this race (I enjoy it :) ), but Shaye/Aken/others are faster pilots so I'm sure the times will get lower before the day is done.

Or take out a type 9 ;) I ran out of time to take my corvette round :/
Edit: the while point is to have fun, whatever that looks like for you o7

This has been great fun and hard work!

Last night I finished a run that improved my horrific T-9 run:

However something was bugging me; At 284m/s flat out I was giving away about 50m/s top speed - and while a small ship gains little going from say 700m/s to 750m/s the T-9 will gain a lot as it spends a huge amount of time approaching and leaving a location.

It was an itch that had to be scratched. However. I flew out here in the Hauler and transfered the T-9 (which has no scoop). 3B scoop from the Hauler? - no thanks.
So - swap in a G4 FSD booster from a Python which was also here.
Use the cargo slider to pretend I was laden and jump back 550 LY to pick up the 7A Drives and use up a lot of my G5 Materials for Isolators:

Then a quick 200LY jaunt over to see this chap:

And then 600LY back (which is where the bottle of red became extremely useful).
No fancy missiles for me though - I didn't have the materials or patience at this point - and as a result there is probably quite a lot of time still to find (not sure how much they save).

Thanks to all who took part, a big welcome to our newcomers and a big thank you especially to Alec for his tireless work for this event (and his classy taste in music!).

Anyway - without further ado here is Bob Dubrovnik and The Wonder Stuff in their final run:

Right then, we're into the final 12 hours of the race so you probably all want to know where you stand and whether you can relax (to which the answer is almost certainly no).

The first big news is that Shaye Blackwood wasn't going to take defeat lying down and has come back in his "Arrow" Viper with an absolutely astounding run, breaking through the 15 minute barrier by just a single second. When asked to comment he said "You and Sgurr made me farm jumponium, Khaaaaaaaaaaaan!". :ROFLMAO:

Elsewhere Bob Dubrovnik, not content with simply doing a T-9 run, has been pushing it further and further up the scoreboard and is now sitting in 11th place with a time of 21 minutes 49 seconds ... IN A TYPE-9 HEAVY!!!!

We've also seen improvements from Ray O'Co's Imperial Eagle and JCB Digger's Imperial Courier and they're now within 7 seconds of each other in 7th and 8th respectively.

And last (but always top in my books) ... another brand new competitor at Buckyball Racing, Cmdr Sharpt00th flying his "Velocitas" Viper. With a time of 21 minutes 33 seconds he claims a very respectable 10th place for a first time racer. Welcome to Buckyball Racing Cmdr.

Right, that'll be the last scoreboard update until the final one tomorrow (as my attention is now focused on heat #1 of the Elite Racers SRV Endurance Championship which I'm taking part in). Keys To The Carrier continues until midnight in-game tonight so folks have just under 12 hours left to try and improve on their time. I'll probably wait until at least mid-morning tomorrow to do the final scores in order to give people time to get their submissions sent in.

Happy racing everyone!

Thanks, for the link.(y)
I did watch his stream a few days ago and as a result I tried the missiles. For some reason they did zero damage. Probably I miss something bc it's the first time ever I used them. I'll figure it out at some point.
That's what I like so much about Elite. There's always something new to learn.
