Newcomer / Intro Void opals hotspots are empty?

I've spent couple of hours in three different void opal hotspots (pristine reserves) and I couldn't find a single one. I just wasted over 150 prospector limpets. What happened? I wanted to mine them with regular mining lasers. Or maybe they are only avaible through core mining?

Do you know how to mine? Because there's something you should be doing before prospecting if you're looking for cores...

This type of mining is really hard. Watch a couple of youtube tutorials and look for the pure yellow rocks. Even if they are slightly orange they are generally a waste of limpets.

EDIT you will cruise and scan for five minutes sometimes without finding a single yellow rock, even with experience. Expect to scan thousands, limpet tens and mine a handful.

You do know that if you mouse-over their avatar you can see when they joined and how many posts they have made etc.

Thank you all for replies. I never mined VOID OPALS before so I thought you can find them like any other mineral in the game. And Orodruin is right - I wasn't looking for cores with opals, just scanning regular asteroids in search of them. And yes, I don't have any problems with core mining - did it plenty of times with LTDs and other minerals.

The other thing about core mining VO's is that they are pretty rare in my experience. In fact, I've found more of other minerals than I have VO's. I may have just been out of luck but there is the added complexity of FDev smashing tyhe nerf hammer around. I hope you do better than I did!

Have you put the Tyres' Curse on VO Cores? I streamed a core-mining session earlier today and had the fewest VO cores in an hour than I had experienced sine plopping my FC in that system some weeks ago. It was quite sad really, pinging away and only finding a few VO cores (plus one Granniestights and one chillydiamond one). Thankfully the stream seemed to have gone haywire so I had a good excuse to delete the evidence of my embarrassment from the yootoob.

Perhaps I have :(

I seem to find more Alexander the Greaterite than I do VO's. And laser mining for LTDs seems completely contradictory to the phrase "diamonds are forever": it needs the added caveat "if you can find 'em".

Back to normal today - plenty of VO and a LTD, grannie and alex to top up - over a hundred VOs in an hour and a bit.
