NASA is reevaluation the names by which they refer to astronomical objects .
NGC 2392 will no longer be referred to as the Eskimo Nebula
NGC 4567 and NGC 4568 will no longer be referred to as the Siamese Twins Galaxies
etc.

I can understand native people being fed up of names invented by other people, but no-one is sure where the term came from, its people guessing. I thought it was a french term 'esquimaux ' for stringing snow shoes.

A similar thing is going on with Morris dancing and blackface- some think Morris is a corruption of Moor (hence the makeup) while others say its from coal dust and begging (i.e. something totally different).

Ah ok. That even makes some sense.
If people now would stop call us Hobos, quakers and whatnot out here in Colonia please... 😜

It's outrageous. You should tell FDev and everyone here how you feel ostracized and ask for a name change for Colonia ASAP. Centria would fit better. Or something completely neutral like L4m3N3rd5.

You wouldn't believe it but the same is happening in the software development industry as well - apparently people are very offended that some programming languages use the terms "master" and "slave" and demand that they are changed to something "not so offensive". It's amusing at this point.

Personally, I do not find the terms offensive to me, I acknowledge they may be offensive to someone else. If your argument against changing the name is ‘it’s only a word’, then what do you care if they swap it out for another?

If you think people are silly for getting upset about a name then look how upset you are when they change it.

When I say you, I mean the general you, not a specific person in this thread.
