Ships Any use for the dropship / Assault ship and gunship ?

I use my Dropship as a surface bomber, which is incredibly fun but sadly lacking gameplay opportunities.. It literally is a "drop" (mines) ship!

this thread made me want to revisit the FAS.

I had one a couple of months before the chieftain arrived. At the time I only had grade 3 thrusters and the thrusters on the FAS combined with the lackluster shields (compared to my beloved Vulture) felt abysmal. ThE lateral thrusters on the Chieftain felt better and the weapon placements seemed more flexible. I have been through all of the medium ships and keep fallong back to the Vulture and Chieftain (but somehow I don’t really care for the Chief). Looking at statistics the FAS seemed like a downgrade, especially with how I remembered the lackluster manouvering of it. I didn’t look back until now...

I suddenly remebered how different dirty drag drives felt on several medium ships when going from grade 3 to 5. On the chief and challenger almost all drift went away. Could it be the same with the FAS? Short answer YES!
Flying the FAS feels like the agility of the chief with the higher thrust performance of the challenger - meaning great pitch without stalling.
Like the challenger you can set thrust to 75% (above blue zone) and maintain higher speeds than most othe combatants. In my testing I only loose ½ s on a full 360 loop and the FAS doesn’t stall og drift! This is amazing.

the hardmpoint setup is optimal for me - even though the placement is something I need to adjust to.

I have always hated the ‘chieftain and Fed ships are hull tanks!’ Claims. Yeah they are optimal for that - but with guardion shield modules there are other builds possible.

my current setup:

It has the same shield level as my vulture with three times the armor backup and 2 extra medium hardpoint and almost the same agility.
I must say it feels perfect - just what I always wanted.
I tried her out yesterday in a HAZRES and quickly earned me 3mil and the last 15% to dangerous combat rank.
I’ve never felt so sure and secure taking deadly and elite groups of three alone before - even a group consisting of aFAS, krait and a gunships - all deadly or elite. My shields didn’t break until I was halfway through the armor on the last combatant.

this had me almost dumbstruck and I started to giggle - 4% hull damage and no damage to my modules.

I really enjoyed my return the the FAS - Yes, it definitively have a place in the game stilland I forsee that I’ll be using it for quite some time. The shadow operator color scheme (the dark and red schemed one) looks amazing with the entirior of the cockpit too and I actually like the look of the FAS too.
Why are you trying to get so much shields out of the FAS? it's a hull tank that has a bigger distro than shield gen, allowing shields to recharge instantly.
The FAS is meant to take a few shots to the shields then tank damage with the hull for for about 40 seconds while the shields recharge.
Guardian shield reinforcements are a complete waste on this ship. If you you want more shields, try a reinforced shield with 3 boosters instead.

I still use my alt's Gunship to do High CZ although i'm tempted to upgrade to a Krait mk2 or even to a Vette.

My Dropship was the poor's man Python for quite a while.
Got it really cheap in the last CG in the last December and it was a nice early bonus for my fresh alt.

I also have several dropships as module storage :)

Can you explain me that "thermal conduit" thing in your build? I tried using thermal conduits with overcharged laser and of course after building greater heat the damage output was pretty good - both the the target and MY internals as well.

Thermal conduit increases damage by 60% when your heat is over 100%. By cooking myself a little bit, my overall damage is increased by 60% and I don't really take that much module damage.

OMG 🤦‍♂️
Why are you guys building one of the best hull tanks as a shield tank?

I was referring to this in my previous response.

basically it doesn’t need to be a hull tank. The flightmodel and damageoutput ensures that the shield doesn’t break. Even if it does, a ship line the FAS has enough hull to ensure victory.

but it doesn’t make sense to me to actually take permanent damage to hulls if it can be easily avoide.

hull tanking is like a boxer with a massive skull not putting up his guards to lure his opponent close - it’s a viable game but penalties are severe.
Why would you deliberately take hull damage unessecarily when you can use the module space for other things?
I really like flying the FAS - but hull tanking isn’t for me

This is not true in the slightest. With shields that recharge in about 40 seconds, my amount of shields equates to roughly over 1000mjs when you add up the the number of times they come back. While having 4700 hull to tank the damage and this is in a PvP fight non the less.

By making it a shield tank you're also forced to use a G5 overcharged powerplant which drastically reduces what weapons and engineering can be used. There's no possible way you can do the amount of damage that I can do while running a G5 overcharged plant.

Also, doing high CZ's with the Reapers over the last couple of weekends, I've yet to complete one with more than 80% hull damage and any module damage other than what I've done to myself from intentionally overheating to proc thermal conduit.

Imagine a Vulture, but bigger, with more guns, half the shields, twice the armor, and non-existent lateral thrust.

That's pretty much the FAS, as simple as you can put it.

Like the Vulture, it exists only to kill.

Because in PVE the shield tanks are just superior to hull tanks. For PvP it is most likely different.

Well... trying to run a hull tank in a High CZ means that 60 seconds later there are chances that you have no weapons and most probably no engines either.
The missile spam is atrocious

It's not different in PVP either, it just generates a ton of complains when someone brings guns to a knife fight missiles to a pvp fight.
It's quite entertaining when that happens.

Personally I'm a fan of unorthodox builds, especially if it works and I see the advantage of such build - it doesn't require s***load of valuable materials for Heavy Duty & Deep plating mod and in my opinion this is really good setup for CZ's especially if you're fighting alone and there is no one to take the heat off you.

Quite so. Hull tank can only work in low-int CZ's where you can easily isolate your target, but in med-int you will be wrecked pretty quick. If not the missile fire then those pesky railgun eagles.

Am using all 3 in my fleet, but only for PvE:

Dropship - shieldless Core/Tritium miner (128t cargo, fits all the mining toys including 2 medium lasers)
FGS - my PvE medium SLF bay enhanced combat vessel - previously 5 PAs, 2 Rails, now the more classic all-MC setup which packs a punch
FAS - shieldless AX boat

The FAS is the ship that teaches seeing your own blood is good. When I flew mine it was sparks, smoke, smashed canopies, swearing and fried everything- and I had a massive grin on my face. Other ships are very clinical and detached, the FAS is a spaceship Viking high on ergot.
I agree - my first experience with the FAS was a (again, shieldless ... notice a pattern here?) PvP build to fight back at Deciat gankers, I was facing a reverski Phantom that I not only managed to keep up with, I caught up with him and shot at him in FA Off flying sideways. That ship is agile and as you say seems to crave aggressive flying techniques.
