Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road To Odyssey Part 1 - One Giant Leap

Very good example actually. The same was true for me when I played Skyrim on PC when it came out. Then about 1.5 years ago I stepped into Blackreach in SkyrimVR and I can tell you that the difference completely blew my mind.

Edit: Back in the 90’s I was blown away by the graphics of the original X-Com too. It is a moving target.

I was quite happy watching jet set ‘redacted‘ bounce around the screen for years then this game called ELITE came along and blew my mind. From Model T To the Jaguar E type and now we’re getting the MClaren F1

Greetings Commanders,

Make sure you are parked at the nearest Fleet Carrier or station and pour yourself some Lavian Brandy in your favourite Hutton Mug. It is time for the first Elite Dangerous: Odyssey dev diary - One Giant Leap!

We are more excited than the Far God Cult being scanned by a Thargoid to bring you the first devdiary on our road to Odyssey, check it out here:

The first in a series of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey dev diaries One Giant Leap explores how commanders can experience light atmospheres and break new ground with exploration on foot for the first time.

Stay tuned for future episodes set to dive-in to combat, missions, environments and co-operative play over the coming months.

Tonight, we will be streaming a Discovery Scanner episode at 18:00 (UTC) on the Elite Dangerous Official Twitch Channel, to take a deeper look into the dev diary with CEO David Braben, and Senior Designer Derin Halil.

No ship interior. I'll skip Odyssey.

I really can't understand why some people are so obsessed with walking inside your ship.
I have tried it in SC and it is not that great, on the contrary it is boring and to me it adds nothing to "immersion" whatever this word means for someone of you.
If I had a choice to skip all this and go directly into the ship cockpiit I would use it gladly.
Yes. I agree. And we do not know how the landing from the ship will actually look like

The fact that they are still finalizing/considering most of the content regarding Odyssey is a bad sign IMHO if you ask me,

Something doesn't add up. The footage released thus far is "pre-alpha", and yet we're supposed to belive that release is "early 2021". If they are releasing in March, they are approaching the end of the alpha phase (meaning the expansion is close to feature complete) and are getting ready for beta.

Did you watch the video?

Yeah and it's lucky Yamiks isn't the one developing the game.

He still doesn't seem to understand the word foundation (and even though your ship is the closest thing to you in the virtual playspace, it's not even remotely a computational foundation)

edit: If I was FDev, I'd watch The Yamiks videos and always do the opposite of what he says.

A spaceship in a flying a spaceship game is not a foundation?

I'm always positive and passionate about the subject of VR - the tentpole feature of Elite.
I could just go on and on and on about how much I love it.

Yamiks has an unhealthy co-dependent relationship with ED.

He has created a persona that has proved popular by getting out of his pram about this game, yet anyone with any sense, who was that angry with the game would just stop playing. When it is the mainstay of your income however, you have painted yourself into a corner. So Yamiks continues to have very strong feelings about a game that, on the face of it it, he cant find much good to say about, on a weekly basis, almost to a deadline.

The persona hates the game, the player keeps playing it. This is why 90% of his video content is just constructed to maintain the popularity it has gained by being that way.

He reminds me of those old critics that had a reputation to just be vicious and hate stuff on demand.

Yes, but is he wrong about this latest Polygon article?

Is he wrong? He certainly deliberately avoiding some of the reality of ED, so that he can about it on youtube. Given the legacy design, It seems completely understandable walking around your ship presents a serious design problem, but that doesn't Yamics ranting on about it like a 3 year old.
So with about 6 months to go, it doesn't set off alarm bells that FD are so unsure about what is and what isn't in the expansion? Or how they are going to implement some of the basics? Or they are not ready for the new consoles which would bring in more money for the development of the game?

As for the legcy comment. All the ships have been designed to be walked around.

I'll be honest. I haven't got a clue what you are on about.

Let's put it this way; FDev are better off getting feet-tech stable before putting you on a ship, in space and risking having you glitch out through the floor, like other space games we could mention. It's not the way they operate and the player experience is better for it. Bet you a hundred credits they see ship interiors as icing on a cake, while stable character control, in a procedurally generated galaxy, is the real victoria sponge.

I don't know because I haven't watched and here's why, I have come to expect the performative slant he puts on everything, so I don't, in some cases, actually know what he thinks about anything. He is performing, playing a character, that undoubtedly puts forward some good ideas and does have some insights, it's just if I want speculation or opinion about something, unbelievably, I come here to the forums*. I'll get the information I want, in a far more measured tone which means I don't have to wade through or see through tons fluff.

He is making money by playing the part of someone who is very angry about the game's direction, I can pretty much expect to know his views on any aspect of the game, so why bother?

For the record, I have watched many of his videos and in the early days when the character was developing, he was good, informative but I just got tired of the shtick when what I wanted was an unbiased opinion. I'm sure I could still watch his videos and get plenty of laughs, I just don't want to.

*there are, amongst the gloomers and doomers on here, some people able to present a different opinion to the one I have, in a more sober fashion. I find them to be be more thought provoking and follow their ideas easier because they haven't had to go through the dress up box and put their angry costume on to present them.
