Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road To Odyssey Part 1 - One Giant Leap

You need to try it in VR before coming to that conclusion.
It's a bit like a vegatarian who has never eaten meat arguing that Fake bacon (Fakon?) Tastes as good as real bacon.
IF immersion is your number one goal and the experience of being there then VR is leagues better than flat screen (like watching a video of a person sat on a beach or being a person sitting on a beach - all be it with cataracts )
If eye candy is your goal then (up until the reverb or 8kx headsets) then a 4k screen does look nicer than VR.

Note I am trying to be light-hearted and not confrontational . You are free to disagree but you really should try it (or maybe not as it could spoil the game for you going forward)

Back to the video. I really am hoping there is a lot more meat to the expansion than just the new planets... We have only had 1 diary so it could be the case but so far I am worried about what may not be in the expansion rather than what is. (And am forgetting VR here)
Apparently this is the single biggest expansion frontier have ever made for ED. For it to be bigger than the entirity of horizons it needs far more than a couple of new planet types.
I really hope FD don't see ED:O as job done and all goals achieved for ED.

If we are having even thin atmospheres we should need atmospheric effects on our ships, each ship with its own flight model, having to get angle of reentry correct.

I hope to see an end of the fade in fade out transitions from seat to srv

I hope we get some for of EVA in space as well as deralict foraging.

I hope ED:O is expensive. As in £39.99 expensive (PC) as I want it to fund further work on ED but IF it is going to be that then it's going to need a lot of content.

I can unequivocally disagree with this assessment because I have tried the VR thing. Many hours doing many different activities, and just the feel of having the headset strapped to my head is enough to break my immersion. That said, I also built an enclosed cockpit, have Virpil throttle and stick, Crosswind foot pedals, 38" ultrawide display that fills the entire front of my vision with additional displays around me for various utilities and tools. For me, my setup is far more immersive.

Which headset? (It matters a lot.)

Regardless, that is your personal opinion and your setup certainly does not sound cheaper than a VR headset to reach the level of immersion we are discussing here.

Personally, I hardly notice the HMD, but that is depending both on hardware and subjective feeling alike.

If you want to discuss who's immersion is more immersive, then go and start new thread and already stop with this poopoo here! Half of the post is you arguing one over another! STOP IT!
Has calling other people’s posts ”poopoo” and using caps worked for you before?
The part of the discussion you are referring to is a natural discussion emerging from the talk of immersion in the video in the OP.

I could see this approach sort of working in a game that has a cockpitless, HUD only view. Then you could pretend your screen is a window and the physical cockpit you built (which was cheap and easy I'm sure) is the virtual spaceship's actual cockpit.

In a game like ED, though, which was built for VR from the ground up and has a virtual cockpit you can never turn off, wouldn't this setup lead to seeing two cockpits at the same time?

Greetings Commanders,

Make sure you are parked at the nearest Fleet Carrier or station and pour yourself some Lavian Brandy in your favourite Hutton Mug. It is time for the first Elite Dangerous: Odyssey dev diary - One Giant Leap!

We are more excited than the Far God Cult being scanned by a Thargoid to bring you the first devdiary on our road to Odyssey, check it out here:

The first in a series of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey dev diaries One Giant Leap explores how commanders can experience light atmospheres and break new ground with exploration on foot for the first time.

Stay tuned for future episodes set to dive-in to combat, missions, environments and co-operative play over the coming months.

Tonight, we will be streaming a Discovery Scanner episode at 18:00 (UTC) on the Elite Dangerous Official Twitch Channel, to take a deeper look into the dev diary with CEO David Braben, and Senior Designer Derin Halil.

What is the point of odyssey if we can't get to walk around our ships frontier, seriously why would you make the promise of ship interiors and we can't walk around our ships?!?!?!??
Seriously!!! What are you thinking!!!! You are in dangerous territory of causing your game fans to quit Elite and give your competition their undivided attention. Why don't you learn from no man's sky!?!?! Really!!! Listen to your fan base and try to deliver on your promises or risk losing your fan base. Please don't disappoint us because Elite's future is on the line.

Here's something to think about a bit...

There are actually a lot of us who don't give two craps at all about walking around anywhere.

I have a feeling that any in ship moving about would be done in the presence of a gravity well anyway (i.e. you are docked) because you have to design for both gravity and zero gravity- and the cockpits we see seem to only make sense in a gravity well (lots of hard surfaces, pointy bits etc).

So with that in mind, it might be when you are landed / docked you get up from your chair, move to the door behind you, it fades to black and then its you on the lift down to the surface. So its interiors in a way but cutting out walking past the toilets and galley.

There are magboots to walk in zero g. Flying around is also an option I would like to have.

This is a thread about the Odyssey DLC and not who's immersion is better. Enough is enough.

I'm really excited about this, even if i'm NOT expecting for its release:
  • walking inside ships (i expect this to come quite later in the odissey "season", to include also zero g EVAs)
  • stations insides (there's a lot of tech to implement to have this, i think it will come with a later expansion, maybe with gas giants and water worlds which i think have to heavily rely on atmospheric/underwater stations)
  • gas giants, water worlds (see previous point)
  • earthlikes (obviously, they require a massive amount of tech and design, if we are lucky they'll come with a fourth expansion in many years, with procedural cities)
Still can't wait for what we'll get

It should not come later as Frontier stated this is going to be a single DLC and they are moving away from seasonal releases. So everything must be included in this DLC at the release.

Lets pay for srv content only slower and with graphical improvements.......thats what odyssey is, Spacelegs (Or now planet legs) was promised to us during kickstarter....now they are dumbing it down nearly 8 years later and charging more for it...

Everything's perfect except that Odyssey is not going to be a season nor a series of updates like it was for Horizons and Beyond.
It is instead supposed to be a fully developed DLC. Move your expectation to another following DLC further down the line.
