VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

Might as well sling this vague VR reference in here:

Also undecided is how Odyssey — which will not launch with support for virtual reality — will impact players who have long experienced the game exclusively in VR. Hughes said his team is keeping those heavily invested in VR technology in mind as they make their plans for launch.

It’s in a paragraph about how they haven’t settled on the method for getting from ship to foot yet 😄

** Shakes fist at any canned animations **

I just found out that my Rift S will stop working unless I sign up for Facebook... If this is the case, screw VR!
who ever told you that was wrong.
Party chat and friends lists is now integrated into Facebook however so there is some truth in it.
(unless there has been a new update in the last few days of course)

edit i stand corrected my appologies.
That sucks. I will also not be forced into it yet but still. To be honest the writing was on the wall once FB bought oculus.

I dug into the details, and it looks like I'll be grandfathered in so I won't need to use Facebook. THANK THE GOOD LORD!!

I just hope the "will be encouraged to merge it with their Facebook profile" won't be some annoying nag screen I have to click "No!" to every single time I use my Rift.

Mark Zuckerberg can go suck a lead pipe.
Never been particularly happy about Facebook's dominance in the VR space, in fact I held of on getting VR until there was an affordable alternative. I just hope there will continue to be serious competition because I fully expect things to get a lot worse inside Occulus headsets...

Had I known they were going in this direction, I would probably have gone with Valve (I'm a Steam junkie, so might as well go all the way).

Maybe the idiots at Oculus will see the huge push-back and recant this stupid stupid decision.

Here's hoping common sense will prevail, I'm not optimistic though...

I saw this as eventually pretty much being inevitable as soon as Facebook took over.

I'll probably sign up for a Facebook account at some point if it makes using my Rift easier, but it doesn't mean I have to actually use that FB account or post anything on it etc. Presumably I'll be able to go into the settings and slap on all the privacy stuff and just use it for its login details.

I don't think you understand just how malicious Facebook is. First, they require you to use your own identity - no creating "fake accounts" with Facebook. Second, they collect data on you whether you use that account or not. Heck, they collect data on EVERYONE using their tracking software that is installed on an insane number of 3rd party sites. For this reason, all domains related to Facebook are blocked via my router. So I guarantee they will collect data from your Oculus and affiliate that to your personal identity. Oculus does this already, but I have a fake account with them, so all they know is some "Old Duck" dude from somewhere in North America (I use a VPN) is playing Elite Dangerous when he should be working.

Something I am going to try is to block Oculus app from accessing the Internet. I'm assuming my Rift will still work (none of my games are Oculus purchases except the demos). This will keep it from updating and subjecting me to any Facebook naggery.

Facebook has slightly less information about me than the Electoral Register and slightly more information than the telephone directory.

Unless we’re heading for a dystopian future vision where FaceZucker Squads kick down our doors to retinal-scan verify us with extreme prejudice, I’m not that concerned.

My condolences to those who feel effected by this, but to me it harkens back to the Steam-required furore when Half-Life 2 popped out.

Or he's selling that info to governments that are too concerned about keeping their citizens in their place. He seems like the type of guy to sell anything to anyone - Cambridge Analytics*...

*a British political consulting firm that combined misappropriation of digital assets, data mining, data brokerage, and data analysis with strategic communication during electoral processes.

TBF, he does seem like he's learned his lesson from that little escapade. I do use Facebook, and it noticeably changed afterwards. If it happens again, it'll be far more insiduous and less public.

I'm not a fan of FB integration and jealously guard my Oculus legacy login details, but as a dev, the 2023 deadline doesn't apply - to use the headset for development you have to tie it to a Facebook account from October. Even for a test user. Apparently this makes things easier, but I'm not sure for whom.

Between that and the fact that FS2020 exists and E: D no longer does, I'm looking at (in 2160p) the Reverb G2 with envious eyes...

Well...I suppose he could try and sell my info to Whitehall, but I reckon they’d be all, “no thanks old bean, we already have that sort of thing on file.”

FB have my name, date of birth, and where I live. That’s one more piece of information than is available in the phonebook. Jeff Bezos and Sundar Pichai probably have much more useful and tasty info about me, haha 😅

The Yamiks posted a video containing a written interview with somebody and FD saying that Xbox and PS won't be available at launch either. What does FD think they are doing. If you are interested the video is on Ytube.

Not just not at launch, but there are currently no plans to support them. People will surely be excited to pay all that money for the new consoles, and have the game continue to be developed for the last gen ones that aren't sold any more.

I wondered whether the reason why they have not settled on certain things is related to the VR element, because it makes no sense that this would not be firmed up by now. I am also surprised that if you are doing the Neil Armstrong moment, you would not want to maximise the moment of getting out of your seat, going to the air lock, unfolding a ladder and walking down it on to the planet surface.

Sold my Rift and ordered the G2. Like you I only used the demos on the Oculus store. Bored with Horizons so playing RDR2 and a few other pancake games until the G2 arrives.
