Ships Carrier Purchase

I am seriously thinking of buying a carrier tonight. I have the credits and can then use it for mining to get the best price for even more credits to build and engineer my fleet.

What do members think about buying a carrier at the moment. I am still relatively new to ED (end of March this year) but feel that buying one will enhance my game enjoyment and help a lot with several key areas.

What can you say to put me off or encourage me?

@Hawknerd here is a discord channel devoted towards just fleet carriers. Keep in mind if you buy a fleet carrier you have to pay a weekly upkeep up too 25 million if you equip everything. Its deducted even if you are offline and will automatically decommission your carrier if its funds reach -250 million. Tritium (its fuel source) is very scarce now and alot of people are decommissioning their carrier because of that. The upkeep was what stopped me from buying one. If you can buy it and still be comfortable with your funds then go for it.

I can afford to buy one. It will mean having to mine for a while to get my full liquidity back to continue developing my fleet but it will also help me make progress in the game. For example I can mine painite and then store it on my FC until I need cash and then find the best price.

I understand what your saying. I'm just informing you of the negative downsides to them if you werent already aware.

I have many uses for one now which wasnt the case when I did the beta2 and had a play with one. It will come in handy and I will just mine a bit to get my funds back.

I thought he tritium issue was resolved? It has just been made twice as strong.

Thanks for the input so far.

I'm not sure exactly what the situation is with tritium is atm. I've been in the pleiades area finishing up my combat rank for the last month. I've not seen any indications the issue had been solved as there are still deep space explorers requesting help to refill their fuel.

Just do it. You get the thing, it has half a tank of gas (cue Blues Brothers quip), enough for a few jumps. Keep it for a couple of weeks, if you don't like it, decommission it and get your money back.

If you have been sitting on 5bn for any amount of time, what were you going to do with the money anyway?

When I got my carrier, it left me with the princely sum of 27m. I hadn't even fitted any services. I did a few bits and bobs for a couple of weeks, got the services I wanted, I now have a personal fortune of 40m and 500m balance on the carrier. I don't need any ships, I'm sorted. I've rather enjoyed the challenge of being as skint as when I started the game.

Only thing is, if you're in Colonia, you're almost certainly going to have to exclusively mine for fuel, if you're in the Bubble, no problems.

You've got nothing to lose.

So what happens when my chosen mining system has loads of FCs in it? Do you arrive at a local system to the one you want but undetermined beforehand?

check the galmap then system map, it now shows when all slots are full, a red symbol.
Need a ring to mine, try Nagarlaw. An 8 trillion tonne ring system with all the good stuff. had two FC's , but i've just left so plenty of room.

not doubles, mostly icy with inner rock section. looks like this...

so the red just means that particular planet/sun is full but there is still space in the rest of the system if there are planets without the red carrier symbol?
