🐨 Planet Zoo: Australia Pack coming 25 August, 2020 🐨

I love it! The animal selections are great.
Kangaroos were pretty much a must. Cassowaries were highest on my Australian wish list, and Koalas and Dingos are very iconic, too. I wonder how the Koalas will behave, though? I would not mind a bit more active behavior over realism but sleeping most of the time.
And the design pieces are mouth-watering. Those painted rocks alone....

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the robotic kangaroo statue:

The opinion about the Dingo varies per person.

I can see where for some the Dingo is just an ordinary animal, nothing special. For me, if someone asks me to name up a few animals that come from Australia, the Dingo would definitely be among the first 3 to name, and the Cassowary would have been an animal that wouldn't be on that list. I've seen them, so I recognised them immediately, didn't even know they where Aussies.

I can see from that perspective why they choose the Dingo, As it's aw well known animal, maybe a bit to common yes.

I've seen people saying a European Pack wouldn't be viable because the animals aren't special. But to me, as a European, I can name plenty of animals that might not be known to people from other continents/area's that to me are worthy of a spot in the game IMO.

I really like the colorful scenery as well in the DLC.

The comments about the Tasmanian Devil I still don't get. They come from Tasmania and not Australia (Extinct on the Australian mainland for 3000 years).
Wouldn't that be weird in a "Australian" pack?

edit: My geographical knowledge let me down on this bit. Tasmania is a state of Australia of course.

I agree though, it's one of those "rare" animals that deserve a spot in PZ.

That source is not reliable. It lists the dingo as a species distinct from the grey wolf (Canis dingo rather than Canis lupus dingo). This is taxonomically incorrect.

That seems widely up for debate. A lot of biologists now seem to be reconsidering that, and finding evidence that the dingo is, in fact, its own species. Here's a recent, heavily detailed research paper on why this could be: Link

As someone who currently lives in Tasmania, I feel qualified to state, without reservation, that Tasmania is a part of Australia.

As a European, I wouldn't know and should have checked.
Apologies. (y)

It's called Australia DLC, not Australia Mainland DLC.

A lot of the animals endemic to Tasmania once lived in Southwestern Australia, before the Dingos or the European settlers came.

You are correct.

I aggree with @Luuknoord that the Dingo is a topic of perspective. I understand that they are not that important compared to other animals for Australia, but they are really for australian sections in european zoos. I am happy with the Dingo, but if it would be switched in favor of another animal, I'd prefer the wombat over the tasmanian devil, just because it seems more common in zoos.

At the end of the day, five animals can never represent the huge fauna of australia, just like it could not represent south america. I still think the continent theming is flawed, but that's just my personal opinion. If nothing changes and this game has only a life span of 2-3 years, every continent except afirca will always be underrepresented. If my wishes come true and it has a much larger lifespan, keep in mind that they need to keep some iconic animals for future releases. Though, speaking as an european, this pack has every iconic animal that is knowen here, maybe except for the Emu.

I think I’d be less annoyed about the dingo if they’d included the emu. As I and others have pointed out, it’s actually the 6th most common species in European zoos and for me is absolutely essential for an Australian zoo or mixed species enclosure.

It bothers me when people say it’s too much like the ostrich. If you’re building a random fantasy zoo with a random mix of animals and you’re happy with ticking the large bird box perhaps but for building real zoos with Australian sections or animals it’s a major omission.

I think that people dislike to see "reskin" (which they are not, but you get it) or very similar animals in the packs is that we only have 4 slots in those packs. I have to admit I am one of those people, simply because I would like so the roster is very visually diversive. I also think most players are just as you described. I like to build kinda realistic habitats etc. but for species I prefer diversity over realism (within reason - would not like extinc or mythical animals.)

Ideally we would get both similar animals that are common and unique animals, but with limited number of slots in the packs that is sadly not happening. :(

On the website zootierliste.de you can find how many collections of animals lifes in captivity (in european zoos, wildlife parks and private holding).
Zootierliste.de doesn't show Animals that are kept private. It would be extremely difficult to make such a List and keep it actual. There would be almost no Farm Animals if it would really also show private Holdings and I think some People in Germany keep Tasmanian Pademelons as Pets but for some Reason there are none currently kept in EAZA Zoos
