Destructoid article about Odyssey

Destructoid - which I've never heard of, but Google seemed to think I'd be interested - has an article in which a pair of Frontier developers are at pains to refute the accusation - made by, among others, me - that Odyssey is just a First Person Shooter tacked onto the existing Elite.

The gist seems to be 'you'll be doing the same things you always have done, but on foot'. In a game whose raison d'etre is flying spaceships, but hey ho.

I was particularly struck by the sentence:

'Odyssey is a visible new entry point for the long-running game but "not at the expense of the existing player base," according to lead designer Gareth Hughes.'

As a (VR) member of the existing player base who's feeling a bit expended, I'm not entirely convinced by this. Somehow I doubt it amounts to a promise to definitely absolutely bring back VR. :)

I think the article's a nice bit of spin. But if you're so minded, have a read and see what you think.

I don't think it's tacked on because it is not like a last minute idea they came up with to boost sales like for example Fallout 76 tacked on a battle royale.

Interesting:

Planetary exploration will be a matter of "How far can I go before my suit energy starts to run out? Am I going to be able to make it back to my ship? Am I going to be ambushed while I'm out there?"

"We're playing around with how heat, gravity, and radiation will affect the player," said Hughes.

"We're still balancing that stuff. It has to be enough of a threat without suppressing your ability to actually go out and explore. It's a really fine balance to make these environmental factors meaningful without them affecting the gameplay loop so severely that it's no longer fun."

"identify organics in your locality on the planet surface"

More info there- looks like the environment will play a role- so no spacewalks on the planets of death :D

Weren’t engineers mentioned at some point? In which case modified gear could be a thing.

True- it seems if you stitch these interviews together you get an information hanky!

Hmm, some extra wee bits in there.

Players will also be able to disembark at ports. They're intended to be "social hubs where you can meet other players, find mission givers that you might not otherwise experience, and create a safe space where pilots can meet and do piloty things," according to Hughes. "The social element is important."

Think those are the first mentions of radiation + port mission givers. (Although they did mention meeting Engineers previously iirc).

The intention to not ‘tack on’ a side game is good. Guess we’ll see how well the worlds merge. (The principles of 'return to ship safety' explo / multi-vehicle base assault co-op [seemingly mooted in the initial PR] / opportunistic pirating of settlements etc are all fine. Guess it will just depend on the mechanics / implementation).

I do want them to spread this gameplay over to Powerplays side of the toast though.

Interesting :
" Hughes told me that human settlements are "populated by the factions you're used to seeing." You can accept missions from NPCs, trade with them, "massacre them," play the role of pirate – the usual. Elite Dangerous "doesn't tell you who you have to be and when you have to be that."
