Newcomer / Intro Powerplant degradation.

Let's say a ship's reactor is about 99.9% power draw during normal, minimal use conditions. The reactor gets used for a long while without getting repaired at a station and well, it loses a bit of module integrity. Does the power draw now very quickly jump over 100% as it degrades, or does it not work that way?

In other words, if I spec a power plant for long term exploration, should I take into account how it over time loses efficiency?

Powerplant output is not affected by integrity. However, like every module, a powerplant can malfunction when integrity drops below 80%. When a powerplant malfunctions it's output drops to 40% for 5 secs and then returns to 100%.

There is a special case for powerplants at 0% integrity: power drops to 20% for 5 secs and then returns to 50%. While a powerplant is at 0% every hit from weapons fire has a small chance to make the powerplant explode destroying the whole ship.

Thank you. I really haven't been in this situation yet, so it's good to know I don't have to worry about getting completely stuck.

Do neutron boosts affect the PP? I thought they only hit the FSD but it's been a long time since I last boosted.

If your ship is still going. you'll never be completely stuck. Unless you run out of fuel and don't have a fuel scoop. Power plants will keep running unless they get damaged from outside influences like bumping into stars/planets, etc. And as far as I'm aware, power plants don't run if you're completely out of fuel but I don't know. I've never run out of fuel.

When you run out of fuel, your remlok suit helmet deploys, everything in the ship stops working and you get to watch the frost forming on the inside of the canopy while your suits oxygen supply slowly runs out and you asphyxiate.

You can try it out in an SRV. Works the same as in a ship. Big advantage of the SRV is you can synthesize new fuel (1 sulphur + 1 phosphorus) when you're on emergency oxygen. Then the powerplant starts up again.

Btw you can also synthesize new emergency oxygen (2 iron + 1 nickel) in case you like just sitting there listening to your own breathing.
