Anyone else seeing this weird effect (red lines added for emphasis)?

View attachment 185066

It's this weird zone of "fuzzy", and it always seems to be around in this area. I was at 6000 ft ASL and had been flying for 30-40 minutes when I noticed it. It might happen at other times and altitudes. There is a "pop-in, pop-out" effect that can be seen with this as well. It's not map related. I think it might have to do with how autogen fills in trees. Next time I'm flying, I'll try some different altitudes to see what effect it has.

ps - ELEPHANT BUTT TREES! :p

Probably where the algorithim thingymabob has removed any cloud from the bing sat imagery.

Got to say, I'm really digging the Diamond DA62 - very pleasant to fly, sleek looks, pleasant interior, and since I watched that 30 minute Youtube tutorial on the G1000 (yes, I sat through the whole thing... am I crazy?) all - well, most of those buttons and screens don't seem too intimidating anymore.

Yep, that's my favourite too so far... although I've only tried about 5 of them so far. Love the views from the practically-all-glass cockpit, and the instruments look how I imagine a plane to look. No idea what half of them are yet though. 😄

That "G1000 for beginners" video was so full of jargon and assuming prior knowledge that I "just went ahead and" let it go right over my head.

Yeah, a lot of the finer detail was lost on me too, it's mostly the procedures stuff like setting approaches etc. that are still going over my head, doesn't help you get overloaded with acronyms that as a non-pilot I haven't got the faintest about. Still though, I know now mostly how to operate the thing, even to get from one menu to the next is a challenge... certainly doesn't quite have the intuitiveness of say a smartphone OS, that's for sure! Baby steps...

If FD doesn't repair/flesh out some of core game stuff soon, and instead continues with chasing the multi-player crowd with half-backed implementations of some poorly thought out mechanics I am seriously considering never playing this game again. I'm not to that point yet, but...
I have to say that although I don't really plan on quitting, Fdevs continual chase of multiplayer aspects (and consequential failures to meet their unrealistic expectations) instead of at least trying to throw us single-players at least a rotten bone from time to time does feel a bit... disheartening.

Found something interesting..

There is a runway below and one of the strips goes exactly under the hill. Thought Bing messed up but then it hit me - Its Wonsan in North Korea so perhaps its a military installation.
And it is! Not active underground runway of NK air force.

Kind of reminds me of that secret runway in a cave in Kingsmen. :D
That's cool. Wonder what else there is to discover in NK.

In Elite Dangerous, I want two shadows (at least on planets with two suns), but NOT in FS2020! I understand why they are, but there is an "easy" solution to this - do two fly overs, one in mid morning, the other mid-afternoon, and combine the two images to get rid of most of the shadow. This technique can also get rid of a lot of static vehicles without this "oil stain" effect we currently have. Of course there's still the issue of the northern shadow (in US), but that should be much less than some of these deep shadows I'm seeing baked into the ground textures because the mapping plane flew over at 4:00 PM.

The problem is, once you start seeing this stuff, it's very hard to unsee... In the meantime I'm surprised there isn't a better "lighten the dark shadow, remove the car" algorithm. It's not that hard even with just a single image, assuming the shadows aren't too dark and the cars aren't bumper-to-bumper.

Fingers crossed they fix this. Hey Microsoft, hire me and I'll get rid of these shadows for you! Shadows are my specialty after all :p

Niagara Falls aren't exactly stellar either...

In other news, McMurdo airfield in antarctica is already there, but antarctica for now looks rather ugly, nowhere near the teaser videos...The sunrise was nice though!

I actually fired up ED today, pretty much for the first time since the FC release. Primarily because I got myself a new monitor to play FS2020 on so I wanted to see how it looked / played... As well as everything you say (which honestly I've been saying for ages), other than the improved resolution over VR, I doubt I'll be going there very often. It had something very special in VR which the TrackIR doesn't come close to matching.

But back to the topic at hand, FS2020 looks lovely on the new monitor, the scenery sparkles (at least where I was flying) and the accuracy of the local ski mountains is spot on, every run exactly correct. The cockpit resolution is so much better, everything's bigger (went from 21" to 32") and floating in to land in a Cessna 152 is so much fun. :) I'll highly likely look to get a new VR headset if / when it's supported, as even having managed to smooth out the TrackIR it's nothing (IMO obviously) like VR.

Sounds like the bad outweighs the good at this point, especially with highly anticipated features like real time weather being bunk. Probably for the best that I'm unable to game until early next year.

Always been a fan of the Beechcraft 58 (twin props ftw) in FSX but this is my new favourite ... still need to try many of the rest though.

Did you guys start to develop any favourites already?

So just from messing around on my free flies, I have three I keep going back to.

Icon A5 - Slow in a good way and good for exploring my local area (The town and towns around where I live). When I want to keep it nice and slow and loiter so I can work on spotting and looking at things. I will launch this from the closest local airport to my home and follow the roads I know like I am driving. I enjoy looking and confirming all existing places and the big part of the exploration is seeing just what's behind the views Im use to seeing from the car. For everything from what's between these two roads I always take to what the hells in the depths of the woods behind my house, this thing is perfect. It is very goofy looking, kind of reminds me of Mr. Beans three wheeled car from the 80s tv show (I was very young when I would watch this dont know exactly which tv show).

Extra Extra 330LT - I have been using this thing to explore the southeast of my state (Massachusetts). It's sleek and stylish and reminds me of a WW2 fighter aircraft. I like it very much, especially the bubble canopy. Feels very agile and I can easily pilot it like I am use to piloting things from normal games (No flight sim experience, so tend to use sharp unrealistic angles). I once had the wind gust so hard it blew it over backwards, scary moment.

Textron Aviation Cessna Citation Cj4 - Ah, the good life. Ive been using this for some long distance exploration (I tried flying from south Boston to JFK in New York and crashed right before the city due to going too fast during descent and destroying the plane, whoops). I also used this on my cloud exploration journey the other night that lasted three hours. Very fast and gets me where I want to be altitude wise without fuss (I am very new to the point where this game is almost like a survival horror with amazing graphics, I never have any trouble with stalls or climbing with this plane, I would consider it easy mode! =D ).

Next on my list is the Cub Crafter X Cub I will use this tonight to explore Boston at night. I love the utilitarian basic look of this plane and when I actually start really learning how to fly (I am just using a controller from bed on the tv, once I can sit and incorporate the keyboard is when my learning will really begin, I am still in spectacle mode) it will be in something like this. I want to learn the basics in something simple and straightforward before I jump into the fancier stuff. I also like the thought of this game getting an economic module / tycoon aspect and having to start in something like this much like the Sidewinder in Elite and work your way up.

Playing ED on a 34" monitor at 3440x1440 and TrackIR has worked pretty well for me since I started playing this game in late '16. I've not really been tempted to buy VR, as there really isn't that much eyecandy in ED, and I really don't like low resolutions even if they are nearly pasted on my eyeballs. Having said that though, if anything is going to get me to spend the money for VR it will be FS2020. :D

I think for me it's the sense of scale, and of course the dreaded 'mersion... ED is a truly beautiful game in VR.

The low resolutions are certainly an issue (I have an old Rift CV1 - there are many HMD's which improve upon that I believe), but to be honest the only time in ED it's a potential issue (for me) is making out landing pad numbers on planetary bases. Going in today and shooting a pirate lord I realize I've not been seeing the 'special effects' of my weapons on his ship, but that's it really, and I could happily live without that. :)

Posted some control tweaks suggested for a controller but I found they worked better in theory than they did in practice so I edited them out. The advice to set a deadzone on my xbox controller helped very much though, I found a 10% took care of that slight play that would throw the plane off course slowly as my controllers have some wear. Binding a delegate to copilot key and active pause key which are not bound to controller by default is something I did tonight and that was helpful.
