Newcomer / Intro Laser won't fire in training simulations

I just downloaded the game yesterday and I am currently trying to complete the pilot assessment training simulation, but so far I have not been able to. I can't defeat the shielded drone because my burst laser does not fire. When I try to fire it, I can see the laser hardpoint through my cockpit shows a spinning animation and makes a sort of whirring sound, but does not fire. The cannon, on the other hand, works just fine, even though the laser doesn't.

I spent over an hour on google trying to solve this issue. It does not seem to be resolved by any suggestion I could find.

As far as I can tell it is not an issue with the fire group or controls. My cannon is the secondary weapon and burst laser is the primary weapon. My primary weapon is mouse button 1. I tried changing it to a different button, it still won't fire. I don't think there is any way to change weapon loadouts in the simulations.

It doesn't seem to be a power issue either. In this part of the pilot assessment mission I don't even have the ability to change my power distribution. Just to be sure, I tried doing the combat training simulation. Sure enough, my laser doesn't work there either, even though I transferred all power to weapons!

I went to youtube and looked up a video of someone else playing through the pilot assessment. To me it doesn't look like he does anything different than what I am doing but for some reason his laser is able to fire while mine doesn't.

Anyone have any ideas? Surely this must be a bug.

Clutching at straws...

Is your laser a turret one? If so, you'll need to change it's setting to target: however, as a beginner, I'd use a gimballed version.

I know you've tried remapping. Try not using the mouse buttons at all and map other keys, including an alternative key, then try both.

Can you post a shot of your fire groups, your cockpit when trying to fire and your right hand panel? The last one for power levels to see if your plant is up to muster.

I'm not able to change my loadout in the simulations, it's preset. The weapons are gimballed. I tried remapping to different keys as you suggested, no luck.

Didn't @Para Handy post a video of that training session not too long ago?

In any case - the whirring and spin-up is not the laser, that's the multicannon. And you need to keep your finger on the trigger for a little while - the MC has to spin up before it can start firing. Might just be that you confuse the laser and the MC, and that you take your finger off the trigger too soon.

ire groups. Its been so long since the training simulator that I forget what its like lol

That is definitely not the case, I have tested this thoroughly. I just streamed to show a friend of mine who is an experienced player. He thinks it's a bug.

I did some more testing in play mode with the starter ship that has dual pulse lasers and no cannon. I can't fire my lasers there either, neither primary nor secondary work and it's not even the same type of laser.

Yes, the laser should fire as soon as the button is pressed and it looks like it's mapped as the primary fire.

The secondary fire is tge MC which does need to spin up and therefore needs the button ddpressed and held.

Edit

In the game, not a training module, are you able to sell off your current lasers and replace them? Say, first with just one beam laser, then try 2?

I'm second guessing here as I'm posting from my phone the moment.

Welcome to the ED (and the steep learning curve)
You've come to the right place to find answers, coaching, advice and free Snickers Bars 🤪
The commanders here are the best with years of flight hrs.
BTW, you can easily post your screen shots directly here in the forums without having to post a link. Simply click the photo icon between the (chain) link and the camera at the top of the comment window.
Best wishes for your success, Commander. 👍

If it will help, here is a screenshot I took while trying to fire on the canisters during the assessment:

Looks ok:
  • pips on weapons: check
  • laser on the right, assigned to primary fire button: check
  • laser charged: check
  • MC on the left, assigned to secondary fire button: check
  • ammo in the MC: check
  • target locked: check
  • laser locked on target: check

That leaves me with two more guesses, though:
1) your primary fire button (the physical button) doesn't work. But I suppose you tried remapping that function to a different button or, in the actual game, tried to assign a laser to the secondary fire button
or
2) there's something in your GPU/drivers that prevents showing the laser effects. What makes me (slightly) suspicous here is that your target in the screenshot is at 35%, i.e. you already shot at it and hit. Did you shoot it with the MC before that picture?

If you cannot get any lasers to fire on the initial tutorial or in the starter sidewinder no matter what you have assigned to fire button then you probably have an issue with the game itself, not your setup. I suggest using the launcher menu option "Validate Game Files" (or the Steam equivalent if you are playing via Steam I assume).

Since the cannister in the screenshot has taken some damage then I assume that the multicannon fired (I also note on zooming-in that the MC ammo count has reduced) so even if swapping your mapped fire buttons around won't allow laser firing then I assume it must be an issue with your game files.

BTW, as mentioned, I did post a video of that last year. I made a right old mess of it but it is here, from the shielded drone, if you want:

Have you had any luck yet?

I went through that tutorial earlier today and it worked fine - so they haven't broken it recently. So it's either your install, or your controls, or you're somehow not hitting the target 🤔

Good luck!

Except that he can look out his window and see his laser kind of spinning. Does a laser spin? Sounds like a multicannon to me.
