Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

Just a suggestion, but why not play DCS, where opponents can jump into their planes and have at it. No 'engineering', just you, your plane, and your skills (or lack thereof). May I suggest the vintage WWII planes on full realism (or whatever it's called), to test your ability to even keep the thing in the air while you're getting shot at. :D

I come from a combat flight sim background, in fact. I've played Rise of Flight, IL-2 Great Battles and DCS for years.

Hence my, ahh, "cavalier" attitude towards shooting at targets, and being shot at myself.

However, the Elite flight model is very interesting, as is 6dof space combat. I'm enjoying the new challenge.

With respect: if you are feeling like the possibility of interacting with other players - in whatever form that can take - could waste your time, then you probably would be better served playing in Solo or PG. You can still chat with everyone there via System chat (which of course is shared between all modes) but you won't have to risk your progress or whatever it is you're doing being negatively impacted by another player's actions.

Having the attitude of "I want to fly in Open 100% of the time but I also want to be left alone 100% of the time" is just not a realistic expectation.

(Not saying that this is your specific expectation, Brrokk, just making a general statement)
Well, it's fairly realistic. The whole ganking thing is very overblown. On average I get ganked once every two years or less. That's less often than my game gets interrupted by network issues. When the network drops I check cables and settings and carry on playing. After a meaningless gank I block the player(s) concerned and carry on playing. Yes, I also do "maintenance", trying to make sure my internet is good and blocking self-proclaimed DG2/YouTube gankers, but I don't see any need to alter my play or "train" for these interruptions.

I don't think interacting with other players wastes my time, I enjoy it. It's only the uncommunicative "shoot first and do nothing else" types I exclude, and even then only if there's no in-game reason I can guess. Those are very few and I don't feel I lose anything by not meeting them again.

I don't use the blocklist (although I might use the friend list so I know where they are) but I do find the majority of the game gets a bit boring in a maxed out ship & I generally fly stuff that is barely adequate or cobbled together from existing parts.

If a player is determined to pop me I'll just let them & get on with it, although it's been a long time since I had a 'bad' encounter (ie teabagging or mocking in chat). Most people I meet are just as enthusiastic about the game as I am, and their focus is just on a different aspect of it to me. I've met a lot of cool people that way, and in some cases I'll try to help them out by sharing wing rewards, that kind of thing. And sometimes they help me :)

I call Jameson home, and every time I switch to open I see open squares when entering/leaving the system. If I'm flying my Python or Corvette, I get folks trying to do 'meaningful' pvp all the time. It's tiresome, and quite frankly, boring. And no, I'm not switching systems. Why should I? It's easier to switch modes. Quieter too.

When the game first launched it was nice to fly open and meet other CMDRs who used to play the previous games. Bit of a fan meet in those days. Was nice to speak to people from other countries and just chill while running the popular trade routes.

there was piracy and ganking then but nothing like your OP. There were times when I was left with 1% Hull to limp back or disabled to tumble trough space while shedding cargo. But over the last couple of years the community seemed to retreat into solo or private groups and starter space became a seal clubbing fest.

shame really as the high learning curve and unintuitive game world lent itself to getting CMDRs to group together and share notes. Good times I used to do trading in my T9 and even got into situations where pirates would defend me from NPCs. 😂

I think the current state of open is like a big pond with loads of couples and teams in rowing boats happily going about their thing, then a speedboat full of drunk teens tears through throwing abuse and randomly overturning bouts in their wake until they stop using the lake.

I think it fits

Any ship with a shield in the top slot will probably be fine.
You may well be right but I’m a bit of a geek and I like playing with the numbers, and you try telling a trader in a T9 to use that size 8 slot for a shield. They end up using the smallest possible one for the hull mass.

Coincidentally I use a T9 right now

More then enough to survive. Does only work with engineering tho.

But this one is unengineered, will survive pretty well and has 640 tons.
Crazy, right?

I mean, the time is gone. We'll never get it back. We just have to try to make the most of it.

I'm sure my comments will prompt someone to say "Why don't you just gank with un-engineered ships then? Make it challenging, you big talker!"

Sure, good luck with that. This genie is out of the bottle. Ganking with defanged equipment would only encourage the target that their build was somehow OK. Then they would meet a real ganker, with fully engineered ship, and be doubly disappointed.
I took a politician assassination mission the other day and decided to take that frag mamba out that I built for the sake of having one and hardly used at the time.

Hoo boy, I can see why it's favoured as a gankboat. It was okay at taking out pirate lords and other actually-fitted-for-combat ships, but an unarmoured orca? It was on 50% hull with no powerplant or shields after the first volley, and dead on the second.
The thing is, I doubt it'd be anywhere near as effective against a player that had bothered to outfit, never mind engineer, their ship with even the slightest concession to being in open.

Every MMORPG has a grind. That is the meta gameplay for everyone of them. Yes it's tedious (or can be) and borning. However it's a part of the game and I wouldn't trade it. My .02
Interesting point.
I think this a big part of the problem.
If players had no access regarding meta trading or ship builds, would the game be more of a challenge and have maintained player interest longer, thus negating the grind to a certain extent and results of such?
The grind only occurs when a player knows exactly what they need to do and focus solely on that.
I would argue that the game is more fun and interesting when players engage in and understand more than one activity which maintains player interest for longer.
The results of such "grinding" allows a player to be successful in their chosen field but, at least in regards to combat builds, seems to only result in ganking or battles that last too long and can be walked away from with little loss or gain.

To offer an alternative view, like @Riverside I block no one, and every no comms gank attempt I survive adds to my ever increasing hubris and ego.

I'm just better than them.

Training is worth it for that feeling alone.

Planning to test some unengineered builds in Deciat this week, RL permitting.

Haven't tested it, but it should do well.
Only one way to find out :D
I really don’t think the shields will hold, but the hull should. My main doubt about that build is that once shields are down the thrusters can be taken out by seekers. A decent pirate with FSD interrupt should be able to disable it.
