Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Most twitch streams of SC show flying through empty black backgrounds for 10-15min, or lengthy train rides (spaceships?), followed by janky bug ridden interactions with.. everything, including one's own ship. But hey, whatever does it for people.

Reminds me of old game mods of space travel done in FPS engines really. With better art.

Yea true, every twitch steam I took a look at was boring as f..

Look, Dual Universe from a functional point of view is infinitely more complex than SC as you can change the actual world environment, craft new vehicles from individual bricks, etc. while SC assets are all static (to a point, you can attach different guns to a ship but the end result is still static..). I havent seen open beta reports yet but i'd bet it doesnt run so badly as SC, and they do have everyone on a single shard.

Ehhhh, all ive been playing is dual universe. it does get pretty bad sometimes.

And sometimes when it bugs out, it is absolutely crippling.

Since I've run out of popcorn for the usual fisticuffs and calling of names...I'll change tack slightly.

Someone on the island offered me an MSi RTX 2070 SUPER GAMING X TRIO ULTRA + Graphics Card '8GB GDDR6, 1745MHz, RGB Mystic Light, 3x DisplayPort, HDMI, Hybrid (means it's liquid cooled) for my 4 year old 1080ti custom hybrid...straight swap. The 2070 is brand new still in the box.

Reason I'm posting this is I've no idea if it's that good a move...besides replacing GTX with RTX and a ton of meaningless letters in front of the card...since I've haven't paid much attention to the RTX cards so far.... I know my 1080ti is worth it's weight in gold already...anyone who knows anything about the RTX cards think it's worth me musing over...if even for a second?

Going back to 8GB, even if it is DDR6 doesn't seem a good idea...to me at any rate. What benefits would I get from the 2070 super wassiname over my ancient 1080ti?...Besides raytracing shiny puddles...From what I can glean from t'interweb...it's comparable performance wise with the 1080ti...

1080ti for 2070? I wouldn't.

Even if the benchmarks do give a slight edge to the 2070 super:
2070 standard looks to be inferior:
Hmm...they only test the standard clocked 2070 super...this is an OC'd one at 1745Mhz with some other bells and whistles...plus being a hybrid with factory liquid cooling. I just built a custom liquid cooling rig for the 1080ti. I'm tempted...but I may just offer him cash and some horse trading and keep the 1080ti...I do kinda like it, I've had it for quite a while. Gives me options at least. I'm kinda looking for a tad more future proofing than the 1080ti would give me...not taking out a mortgage on the 2080ti either ;)

Thanks for that info mate...given me something to mull over.

Personally I would hang fire until the fallout/known specs etc from the 30x0 series launch smoke has cleared.

I have a 1080ti (Gigabyte Watercooled) and bought a 2070 Super for the wife's machine, as it was the closest thing to a 1080ti without the excessive price tag of the 2080+ cards. The only thing it gives really, as you point out, is the RTX capability and whilst that will keep the "pretties" coming for a while, its raw polygon/texture horsepower that counts to my mind and especially if sim style titles is your thing. The 30x0 series should have at least the next lump of GPU horsepwoer uplift, which then enables a trickle down in terms of making the lower series (or 30x0 series equivalents) more cost effective.
