Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

lol yeah that's the one. I would have searched and linked it but I'm connected via my work vpn at the moment and it has issues with youtube, cheers for that.

FYI – 2014 was When CR expected the Alpha to start. 2016 was when he expected the game to launch. He was a full year late on the Alpha, and yes, the game still hasn’t launched; but 2016 was also the date prior to the scope expansion.

And yes, the Tech Demo is where it is and it’s taking WAAAAY longer than anyone thought, and yes, it may never make it to launch; but everyone claiming CR said “2014 for the game launch” has been misquoting from day one – 2014 was supposed to be the start of the 24/7 Alpha.

Well they have a very valid point about 2014 and the Alpha.

Whats their response to people getting the right date and claiming CR said "2016 for the game launch" ?

We all know how handy SCs scope comes into play when you want to defend the project against all kinds of criticism. "Oh but SC is bigger" and "thats easy, what SC is trying to do is so much harder" etc are easily thrown around in order to deflect any kind of comparison to other games because SC tries to accomplish the whole 100% in one go instead of piece meal like other successful companies that actually release titles. So while Star Citizen the finished game can hide behind its "alpha" tag as well as the fact that CIG needs to achieve so many core technologies without which the whole thing simply doesnt work the same does NOT count for Star Citizens stand-alone modules, the FPS arena, space jockey and space PvP. These are unconnected levels/maps without access to the main game and as such dont suffer from the terrible issues that make Star Citizen crawl along. Why hasnt Star Marine evolved over all its years of existence? Has it been improved at all? Has there been new weapons, new modes, new maps? Has there been animation improvements or the often touted "parkour" mechanics? Has movement 2.0 been tested in Star Marine maybe? Or has the improved flight model been implemented in the race module/space arena module to test them out? I vaguely remember that these modules were released as testbeds for future improvements only that they never were used in that capacity. Players as well as developers ignore these modules for the most part and I wonder why?

Manpower cant be it. With more then 600 people working on this there has to be a team or two or three whos work overlaps or directly influences these modules so why not allow them to test their changes/imporovements out small-scale first? As CIG has stated various teams are always at work on all things at the same time. There is no all-hands-on-X directive instead work is split into tasks and various teams are assigned to whatever is needed.

Even if these testbeds are not part of the maingame they could very well provide much needed entertainment and distraction for the playerbase. And maintaining and imprroving these stand-alone mini-games shouldnt be much oif a problem for a company with that funding, that manpower and that skillset. Work on these modules would not be "wasted" if people would actually play them. In fact they would provide more diversity and fun for everybody.

But CIG doesnt seem to care about them at all. Their tier zero implementation hasnt been improved despite player feedback and reporting. No tangible progress has been registered in any of them since they were implemented. They worked well from day 1 probably due to their limited size and disconnected state but CIG doensnt seem to have made any efforts to bring them along or advance them in any meaningful way.

Do they simply dont care? Or are they missing the money or devs for the job?

Today...with most of these questions still unanswered I consider the stand-alone moduls abandoned or designed to be short-term distractions. CIG wont or cant work on them and which one it is doesnt really matter. Whats important is that they represent wasted resources and time on a grand scale...same as ToW which hasnt even be released. So either CIG is a headless chicken that runs this way and that without a plan, without a goal or its simply unable to affect any progress. Cant really say which is worse. What I know is that neither bode well for Star Citizens or SQ42s future.

Insta deflected due to development reset aka 3.0. The old dates are pretty much swept under the rug explained by the glory that is SC scope and potential. There are dozens of points which you could nail CIG to due to past promises but the active community today doesnt seem to care about past or broken promises. They only look forward. Only look to the future. And when after long stretches of waiting something either isnt delivered or doesnt live up to expectations its a short shrug and everybody is back to looking forward again behaving as if the missed chance, wasted time and money simply doersnt matter and has no consequences on SC eventual release.

I look forward to backers in a few years saying development only really started in 2021 when they added server meshing.

Star trails from inside buildings. I love it !

Ah, someone did a time lapse. Just a shame planets only rotate on their axis and not around their stars. How long is that? About 30 minutes of time lapse? (Just guessing based on the length of the lines and with no idea about the length of day on that planet)

But hey, SC isn't aiming for realisitc orbital mechanics or realistically sized planets, so it is what it is.

What's that glowy blob in the sky?

I just love how the backers keep rewriting history. Pity that nobody informed 2012 Chris Roberts of that...

Chris Roberts said:
The people who pledge for their spaceships will get to test-fly them long before the general public. 12 months in, we will allow the early backers to play the multiplayer space combat Alpha, and then 20-22 months in they will get to play the Star Citizen Beta, adventuring around the huge open galaxy, well before the general public. We are going to limit our alpha slots to 200,000 as we want to stress test the game with real users, but will not be ready for the full load until we have finished Beta.

According to his own words, the original timeline was:

Preproduction Began: 2010
Production Began: 2011
October 2012 - Kickstarter
October 2013 - multiplayer space combat Alpha
Mid 2014 - Star Citizen Beta
Release - November 2014

Of course, we all know by now that the "prototype" he was originally talking about back in 2012 was a machinema video he conned Crytek into making.

But Chris recently assured everyone that he has thick skin, unlike the poor devs who work for him, who somehow get upset when people criticize CR.
Christopher is known to be the man of his word. If he said that, that it's true. The man never lies.

A pity it's another Christopher, not Roberts.

Probably a reflect in the window.

It's not the best star trail picture but the only one I've seen from inside a building.
That's because the way it's set up in that image is an optical impossibility.
So are the rest of them except the ones with just a rock in frame.

The guy’s gonna upload a vid at some point

Guess we’ll see if it’s glimmer or glaring error then ;)

I do kind of find it hard to believe they’ve got it that badly wrong though (IE stars before planetoid etc). Presumably the stars are just a skybox, and we know the planets at least spin. That’s why your ship can end up under a mountain on planetary respawn after all ;)

That's the sun shining out of CR's derriere 😀
