Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

It just shows that in every failure of his life, he never took the responsebilities for his own actions. Instead he identified somebody else as the responsible factor, somebody who didnt let him do what he wanted and prevented his dream from becoming a reality. Its a publisher, its some old opponent, its the haters, its his devs who cant do as he says, its the pressure, its the government.

Why does somebody like him get such an opportunity? A window like Star Citizen is suppopsed to go to some underdog, to somebody who might fail but will give it his best shot and the attempt alone will make the possible failure worthwhile already. Thats not CIGs story. I know of so many indi devs slaving away at their pet project for far longer then CIG already....alone without a team, in their freetime and showing far more promise and skill/capability on a shoestring budget and next to no attention from the broader public.

Its so unfair when all you need is a shiny picture and a load of verbal dung paired with zero respect for people to become successful. Its unfair and cruel and totally the world we are living in. Why am I still surprised when I m almost 50 and have seen so much misery? I guess the joke is on me in the end sadsmile
But other than that, how's things?

I don't know why anyone would still believe that the Calders invested in Star Citizen/Sqn 42 the space games or in Ci¬G as a vehicle to produce those space games. Those things are totally irrelevent to the Calders or their 'advertising' investment...because that's not what they do. They invested in the marketing venture of 'Star Citizen the ship/jpeg sales machine' with an already very lucrative targeted consumer base.

Those types of billionaire investors don't support niche genre video games, buy homeless children new shoes or supply a service of any kind, they seek out and invest in ventures that separate poorer people from their cash so they can make themselves even richer by proxy...nothing more. Star Citizen the marketing venture is almost the perfect vehicle to support this goal through it's proven ability of selling pure dreams for cash...as it has been doing for the last 9 years.

When the time comes...and it will... thanks to Chris Roberts and Ci¬G's continued inability to produce even one single game out of the two being worked on that's anywhere close to being a viable, resellable end product after nearly 10 years in development. The Calders will at some point extract their 30 pieces of silver with some nice interest, perhaps bolstered or facilitated via some pre-arranged punitive damages and leave poor distraught Chrissie boy still waving his hands around wondering what happened to all those very nice rich people he imagined were even slightly interested in his space magnum opus.

We all know the saying about a fool and his money... The Calders aren't fools...Chris Roberts is a proven one. Don't be surprised either when it becomes apparent that Ortwin Freyermuth (House Slytherin) has brokered himself a nice deal through arranging this 'advertising' investment with the Calders. ;)

Over on the SC sub someone asks if it would be better if CIG were bought out by someone.

One person replies...

I think it would be the reverse. A bad thing. I prefer: No external pressure to make a deadline before it’s done. No middle managers saying no to tech or work we actually want. Not everyone wants a release date. This isn’t just another destiny game. Keep cig independent. No compromises.

And this is why if the hardcore supporters get their way, SC will never release. They are their own worst enemies.

Microsoft buying CIG would be a loving nightmare and I'd demand a total refund for everything I pledged

No refunds! CIG are not a bank!

Ah, fun times, remembering reading comments like that when backers were saying refunds shouldn't be a thing.

Someone on SA asked

the game would be released if a publisher bought it. i can see why the cultists are opposed

Because release is when the dreams stop and reality kicks in.

So, what, £30 per chapter? I'd better start saving then. Mind you, given CIG's rate of development, I'll have plenty of time to do so.

Also, should really call them episodes as that is how CIG call them. There will be 3 parts (or so they say).

Initially, episode 1 was going to have 70 missions. This is now 28 "chapters". Not sure if they simply renamed missions as chapters or whether a chapter would contain multiple missions.

Buy anyway, what's 90 quid? Its still a lot less than a ship that will allow you to do mining.

Medical stuff again in the news.

Shouldn't they really be called SQ42 Dreams 1 etc? Still no sign of the beta?

I named my Xbox 'Voldemort'
It basically screams "Mole HD, House of Griffindor".

"Bring it up to modern standards", like CR said, stale after 3 years.
Docking tubes sound OK, maybe even cool, although removing the need for EVA between ships.
9 years in working on initial parameters of armor and shields.
"Active development!"
This is fine, backers will just start count the time from the reboot. Again.

They invested in the marketing venture of 'Star Citizen the ship/jpeg sales machine' with an already very lucrative targeted consumer base.
In one episode of "Silicon Valley" there was an enlightening private conversation between experienced CEO and Founder.
"We don't sell neither the box nor the service", said CEO. "We sell stock. If stock prices rise, we are doing all right, no matter what we produce".

And another one, I think the sorce is the same, but not quite sure here, it may be from somewhere else, about Twitter or Uber:
"We don't make profit! As soon as you make a profit in a quarter, the stakeholders will request more and more of it, with each passing quarter. And if we make less profit than previous quarter, they will be disappointed with us. But until we don't make profit, no one cares about the loss, and we have a leeway."

If we dont assume a scam from the very start as some here propose...
I think Christopher was genuine about making SC initially. Kickstarter demo was a lie, assembled to make money, but hose money were intended to go into production. If Christopher intended to take them and run right from the start, it would be a fraud, not a scam.
I think (again) if Christopher didn't get drowned in money, he might actually start producing the game, and eventually get a free pass on that initial lie.

But after Christopher got money raining down on him, he realized that he doesn't need the game per se. Which leads us to now, 9 years later, 300_ millions, dreams.txt and no game done.

So, how do you call something that started as a lie with intent to make money and runs as a lie with intent to make more money?

I call it a scam.

Of course, this is just my personal vision, I have no solid evidence, and have no personal intent to sue CRobber :)
After all, he didn't scammed me.

The correct question should be "would Elite Dangerous (or NMS or any of the other promising space games) be a kind of Star Citizen today if it received this level of funding instead?". A studio with a competent crew, a competent leader and somebody at the top who has the integrity to accept his limits? There are actually a lot of possible candidates who could ve made something out of this opportunity. If it would ve been Frontier and David Braben can be argued
In regard of ED I think that it still would be essentially the same ED we know. Braben wanted to recreate the initial Elite, and he did exactly that. This is actually the reason ED looks repetitive and boring: it was created around the gameplay of 1984 era, not something we are accustomed to in 2014.
With 300 millions ED would be better than it is, but nothing like Crobber's dream.
