Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

It's just LittleAnt decided that lack of Server Meshing is a good excuse for SC not having the promised 100 planets...
LittleAnt is basically just referencing what was said at the AMA and making the expected inference from this answer:
Would you implement Pyro without server meshing?
Tony Zurovec: Our current plan is to release both Pyro and the server mesh tech at the same time.

No, he is not. X and Y happening at the same time has nothing to do with X depending on Y. He just uses a random catchphrase to justify lack of delivery.
Server Meshing and Pyro are independent from each other.

Indeed. That loading screen misconception has been proven wrong multiple times with commanders travelling in normal speeds from surface of planet A to surface of planet B or station orbiting nearby. No loading screens at all. What we see in that glide portion is a network handshake for the server to decide with whom if anyone, you instance with when you change from gliding to normal speed and viceversa; as you disengage from previous players/NPC and meet new ones and create a new netcode session. But it is not an asset loading screen, assets in Elite are procedurally generated in real time without loading.

The only real "loading", if you can call it that, is when you jump to hyperspace to change systems, since the stellar forge needs the new seed to procedurally generate the new system (plus the new network handshake).

Have people done videos on it? interested to see it.

Exactly. People try to talk about the project using the same language they would for any other game, and it just doesn't make sense.

This project is fundamentally different, and it operates differently. It doesn't make sense to talk about it like it's a standard game release.

Well yes, totally agree. Because it sure doesn't look like CIG have any clue how to release it.

When you go down to a planet and hit the "glide" portion, you are in a well disguised loading screen.
Well abort the glide and you still can land, it just takes more time. (and actually gives more time for renderer. In fact you can abort supercruise at any point and do landing completely in normal space.

It's the fundamental advantage of procedural generation that ED, NMS and Minecraft take advantage of. No need to create, store and load large amounts of art assets. It has disadvantages as well, of course.
SC does the same. A quote from Holy Roberts himself: "The procedural tools we’ve developed allow our artists to “paint at scale” to create stunning and very specific environments."

I don't justify their lack of delivery. Yes they are uber late to deliver systems and they are uber late on all their major techs.
Yes, dear sir, you do:

Trying to give a reason for not fulfilling the promises, while there is none, is justification.

Presumably the same server meshing Erin said "will be coming in next year" - more than 2 years ago.

The problem with constantly saying "can't do X because need Y" is multiple people will have said "Y is/will be finished <soon>" at several points over the years.

Even if the original statement of needing some magical tech to create new assets were true, which it is not.

What other games have done over the years? Make a new map, put asset in map. Allow player to magical movement here that may or may not involve a loading screen of some description to map. Move on.

Being in glide and seeing other ships on the planet.

Hard to see visually, but i've seen ships on the radar. It may only happen when the game has already performed instance matching before the glide ends though AND if there is anything spawned at the destination already (which normally doesn't happen unless someone else is already there).

SC is using a mixture but not in the way ED, NMS and Minecraft allow the game all by itself to generate complete systems or biomes without any manual artist input.
