Predicting what might be included in a possible free 1 Year Anniversary update

So something I think is an important point to raise about the free rides with the anniversary DLC and free updates in Planet Coaster that has a bearing on my own expectations for any free content:

The rides with free updates in PC were nearly always associated with a new gameplay mechanic being introduced at the same time. Frontier seems to have what I think is a really positive approach that new game mechanics should be introduced for free with updates and when they are they used to have a free ride or two that expanded the base game and made the most of the new mechanic (with the last free update it was shooting gallery rides and you got a free one with the free update). They then often associate it with a paid for DLC that expands the options to make use of the mechanic / gives more variety. Also rides in PC were important but the strong emphasis on scenery meant that comparatively most new rides without a new mechanic made the community less excited than the other types of content like full scenery expansions (even as a non-builder) so I'm not sure that I'd say the 1 species = 1 ride comparison is really true.

So if they are going to introduce water navigation or flying then I expect they would have one or two free animals that make use of the new feature but then have more variety in a paid for pack e.g. a free seal species and polar bears etc. would be updated to use the mechanic but with the paid DLC you get short clawed otters, a penguin or two etc. Flying update - a parrot species and a vulture, basic pieces to build aviaries, paid DLC with 5 extra bird species and more scenery items etc.

On the expectations of it being an anniversary update I am keeping my expectations low because a) Covid disruption! and b) the most hoped for new mechanics are also the most challenging to programme - they may have 'solved' the problem of flying or water navigation and have had time to do the work but if it's proved more difficult then I'd rather they didn't rush anything out to meet an arbitrary timeline.

Finally I would say for me personally that I appreciate new animals but if they haven't managed new navigation mechanics etc. then there is stuff I think might enhance gameplay more that might be easier to do (especially since some of it was done for Planet Coaster) like a scenario editor that I'd be more excited about than a couple of extra species even if they do round out the roster. Or introducing 'traits' as a animal behaviour influencer (as they did with guests in PC being 'thrill seekers' or 'big spenders' - animals with traits that influence how stressed they get or how much food they need 'greedy' 'scaredey cat' might be really cool).

I think we can certainly expect another DLC by the end of the year. We know they usually include a big free update with DLC. I suspect they will wrap the free update as an anniversary present and put it all out together. The anniversary is on the 5th of November - that's not even 3 months from when the Australia DLC dropped. Since we usually have 3-4 months between DLCs I don't know what to expect. Maybe we'll get the free update first and then later on (like late November/December) they will release the DLC or they will make an exception and we'll get all of it for the anniversary.
Planet Coaster had a paid dlc in September, the 1 Year Anniversary free update with all the rides etc. in November, and then another paid dlc in December. So realistically, I think that with factoring in COVID delay, it would be reasonable to predict a 1 Year anniversary update of some kind coming within November 5th-November10th, and then the last paid dlc for PZ Year 1 coming in the early or middle part of December.

So to compare that's September to November to December for PC, and August to November to December for PZ. I'm hoping the extra month or so will help Frontier be able to do both to finish out the year. As a side note, the PZ wikipedia page is laughable lol.

Another thing that could be interesting is an update for Exhibit animals, allowing small mammals and (possibly) ground birds in exhibits could be fun. Naked Mole Rats, Echidnas, Mouse Lemur and ground parrots...adding more variety there with smaller animals that are usually displayed in similar types of exhibits.

You're not wrong on this one. But an anniversary update should be a bit more than just fixing things.
But i'd really like to see an update solely dedicated to fixing bugs..
Normally we get that regularly. And I was always the one who said they do their best in fixing bugs and all.
But tbh, with the non-communication and the bug-filled Australia pack I am not 100% sure if they are working on a new bug fixing update and what they are aiming to fix. They definitely need to get out of their beauty sleep and they should do so with a big "WOW!"

Some of those inbetween updates x.x.1 are to fix things from the big update. Big updates include a lot of fixes but some people keep mentioning bugs that have been around for some while. That being said, waiting 3-4 months for such an update - wouldn't work for a lot of people. But I understand what he means, fix old issues before adding new stuff.

I think the anniversary would be great moment for this or somewhere around christmas.
I agree, an expansion or expansion-like update/DLC is something that the game could need after a year - to keep interest among their players or attract new ones.

Each DLC was more than 4 months apart so I don’t see a new DLC anytime soon if at all this year. But that would give a nice space for a sizable FLC by the holiday season.

You mean DLC or is FLC something different?
Businesswise it would be very silly of Frontier to NOT have something new to sell around the holidays undless they think the console edition of Planet Coaster is enough. So I denfinately expect a DLC.

And you all no what? While I still feel uncomfortable asking for something for free (because that's how I am), now I',m at a point where I expect something meaningful and big for the anniversary as well. We are slowly finishing up another month of non-communication and boring animal facts, the last bug fix is also already more than three weeks away by now... I sure hope they have SOMETHING up their sleeves and just WORK in utter sielence (again). I sure hope that not every energy goes only in the development of Planet Coaster Console.

FLC stands for Free-Downloadable Content. Just means what they give for free that they could technically charge for. Patches and bug fixes wouldn’t be FLC but a pack of scenery items or animals would be FLC. I hope, but don’t expect some FLC for the anniversary. A DLC would be December at the earliest I think. I think they’ll have one in time for Christmas if their schedule isn’t too impacted from the pandemic. I’ve just seen people here speculating a new DLC this month or next. Which would be way shorter than the time gaps from the other content.

This is a good point about including full swimming and flying updates in the base game and using those to apply to just a handful of existing animals, rather than lock that coding behind DLC which could be prohibitive from releasing more DLC with those features. Granted the coding for flying for example could be unlocked for those who purchase Avian DLC 1 or Avian DLC, they wouldn't have to get both, but as much as most people probably would get both, it'll probably be more practical to do base game coding updates. Polar Bears and salt water crocodiles for full swimming animations and maybe flamingos and peafowl for flying animations for example. BUT, I wouldn't expect that for a 1 year anniversary patch either, it's probably too soon for what I would think would be more complex coding.

I do think we'll get at least 1 animal, I said before a reskin and a new rig much requested animal that's not avian or marine based, and I'd be really surprised if we got more than 4 animals. I'm not expecting it either, so much as suspecting ,and while if we don't get anything I'll be disappointed, I also wont' be decrying it as unfair. And I do suspect we'll see paid DLC before the end of the year as well, as others have said, they're going to want to have something our for the holidays that is not just PC on console.

I think anytime between December 5th and December 20th is realistic for the last dlc of 2020. And then Our first dlc of Year 2 would probably be in early/mid March

I’m sure will get some stuff. Maybe some free maybe not. I can’t help but to wonder if they’ll ever introduce the educator guide in the announcement trailer in game. If they do ever implement this I could see this happening as a big surprise but I guess will just have to wait and see.

That’s my thoughts on it. But even at that it would be a faster turnaround for DLC than usual for them and that’s with the pandemic. I still think they’d want something out for the holidays.

Judging from this (below) comment in the offical announcement, I'm not expecting much or anything at all. Unlikely to have 2 updates back-to-back.
Again, hope to be wrong :p

We are currently working on Update 1.3.4 - we are aiming to have this out in the next couple of weeks

I think that depends on what's in store, if anything, for the anniversary.

Made me doubt in an anniversary update and / or dlc as well. Unless something was holding 1.3.4 back and it is just late because of that.
I try to keep my hopes low, but am not very successful. Tbh, at this point I would be disappointed no matter what, if all the silence and non-communication was for nothing. I appreciate Chantè jumping in today though.

Frontier releasing 1.3.4 doesn't mean we won't get 1.4 in November. If we take "a couple of weeks" literally and it comes out in two weeks, that's around 10/26/2020, the last week of October. The 1.4 1 Year Anniversary pack for PC came out on November 22nd 2017, which was 1 full year and 5 days after PC's launch date. PZ was launched November 5th, so if there's something coming I would expect it around November 10th-15th.

Now this is pure speculation on my end, but I would honestly be surprised if the entire PZ team was only working on the1.3.4 update. Actually scratch that, I know that's not how they operate. Otherwise they wouldn't have time to work on paid dlc lol. I think, and hope, that they've had a small team working on 1.3.2, 1.3.3 and now 1.3.4, and then two split teams working on 1.4.0 and the last Year 1 paid dlc respectively.
