Scoopable Stars.....confused

I'm trying to understand how my ship can travel further than its stated jump range without scooping fuel.

Here's the situation:

I've used the Galaxy Map settings to filter for only travel jumps with scoopable stars - as described/recommended in many video tutorials . But a number of times I've come out of Hyperspace and been faced with bright pink'ish stars that don't trigger my fuel scoop, yet I"m still able to reach my destination even though my ships 23 LY jump range should've been exhausted before reaching my plotted 28+ LY target system.

What am I missing here?

I think 23LY in this example would be your maximum single jump distance, not your jump range - though the terms are often used interchangeably. Your ship will have a fuel tank allowing it to make multiple* jumps before needing to refuel. Bog standard ASP Explorer will do at least 6 maximum distance jumps before needing to refuel, likely even more if you only jump 80-90% of max range. At least, I think that's what you mean.

* Actual number of jumps depends on maximum jump distance, fuel tank size, and other things

In that case I'd have to know the fuel burn-rate of my Cobra . I have a 4C fuel tank (16T) but that means nothing to me with regard to total distance without knowing the burn rate (say for example: approx 5 LY per/T). Any where that I can find that info? I know it's contingent on spec's of the individual ship and akin to reading tea leaves, but a base ratio would be a starting point.

Thank you for the original response. I'm still finding my way.

The maximum fuel consumption is listed in your FSD stats. But it’s not linear. Intentionally. Taking multiple short jumps to the same endpoint will use significantly less fuel. This is done automatically by the route plotter when “economic” is selected.

also you can manually plot a single jump that is longer than the route plotter max if you have less than a full fuel tank. Auto assumes full tank. Single manual plot uses actual; less fuel = lighter ship = slightly more jump range.

As others have noted, it's not linear so there is no correct answer. That said, the route plotter will give you a good idea - if the line to a system is solid, you can do it on current fuel. If it's dotted, you'll need to refuel at some point.

Now we're get'in somwhere!! All trails start and finish with the 'ol FSD. I should've known to look there. And yes Felix, I have the 4A.

Exactly the answer i was looking for folks. Thanks.....MattG, Felix DeCestria, Speedcuffs, and Slick PBW. Really helpful

Now I feel pretty stupid for scooping at some of those jump spots half in a sweat that I wouldn't reach my destination. Not all of them mind you, but more than i'd like to admit.

And I wouldn't be surprised if A LOT of noobs like myself are unaware of this dimension regarding jump range vs total distance. I'd bet there's a whole lotta unnecessary scoop'in going on out there.

Skimming while you go reduces the number of times you've got to sit and wait for the tank to fill up (or carefully fly round and round the star).

Are you saying that you get unscoopable stars on your route, despite your filter settings?
If so: I noticed a bug that it oftentimes does not apply the filter to your route immediatly. If that happens, uncheck the "apply filter to route" option and then check it again, it should then replot your route according to filter settings.

I scoop every jump I can, with a decent rated fuel scoop I can scoop to full faster than I can get around the star to be pointed at my next jump target. Also during scooping I can quickly zero throttle, check the FSS to see if there is anything unusual I missed, such as NSP's and be back ready to jump.

Most of the time I scoop at full throttle from underneath the star. I am just to lazy to use the pedals with my feet. lol
