Oculus Quest 2 for Elite Dangerous

So, when I buy a monitor for my pc, or literally anything else, I buy it, plug it in and it works.

I don't buy a monitor that only works with steam. I don't buy a mouse then log into an account to buy games that only work with that mouse.

The stubborn, ludicrous persistence to use proprietary systems for VR is holding the whole industry back. It's an absolute joke.

The quest 2 will work with steam too.
I understand a lot of people hate the fact that you have to login with Facebook.
For me personally it's not that big of a deal. From what I've seen you can adjust your privacy settings somewhat.
Also don't smartphones have that?
You need to sign into an account or create one in order to use the phone.

I think it’s awful that Facebook will be able to see what games I play (like Steam/Ubisoft/Origin/GoG Galaxy etc etc already do) or even what films and TV show I watch (like Netflix or Prime Video et al already do) or even my internet browsing habits (like my browser of choice already does), and don’t get me started on all that personal information I had to put in when I opened the account (I told the truth, honest! No fibs!)...

I know FB bothers some people and I shouldn’t make light of other’s concerns, but you could get more useful (and freely accessible) info about me from the Electoral Register and the Phone Book. Just seems to me to be this decade’s version of “Whadda ya mean I gotta install Steam to play Half Life 2?”

I'll post my impressions here when I get it on the 13th. Hopefully you guys can do the same
Great, will do, but probably not until December myself, long story. Many people will be interested I expect as the price and broader offering of the Quest 2 is very appealing, 'my' Quest is not being bought for my PC gaming, that's a fringe benefit. It's being bought for family gaming in much the same way as lots of people bought the original Nintendo Wii.

I had Quest 1 at its launch. Steam, Oculus and Viveport games worked wirelessly without a problem. Elite Dangerous as well. Elite looked nice and felt awesome with them. Quest 1 was not for me though due to them being too front heavy.

I did order Quest 2 and Elite Strap with battery. According to my experience with Q1 I think Q2 will be a keeper.

I also have gone for it, currently running Rift CV1, mine was a late pre-order but should be with me next week so looking forward to the early reviews.

I can tell you that going from the cv1 to the quest 2 is going to be very big in terms of visual clarity. It's even more clear than the rift S. Colours are a different matter.
I got the quest 2 today. Unfortunately I haven't tried ED yet, but I'm planing on doing that tomorrow.

Some things that I can say are that
  • screen is much better than the rift S, clarity very good, I cannot notice any screen door
  • the original strap is OK, not amazing. Headset is not as heavy as I thought it would be. But after an hour or so of using it the strap kinda digs into the ears and it hurts. Elite strap or third party straps might work better.
  • fov is on par with rift s. My ipd is 64 so I'm using the second setting.
  • sweet spot seems bigger that the rift s, for me, at least vertically, it looks really good.
  • colours and black levels are the same as the rift s
  • sounds is better than the rift s, but not by a huge margin. Definitely louder.
  • loving the controls, remind me of the cv1 controls.

That's all I can say so far.
I tried watching movie trailers and I can say that I can finally see myself watching a movie in Vr.
It feels so liberating being in Vr without the hassle of a cable. On the other hand you have to charge it.

I hope tomorrow I can get into ED and maybe even try it wireless.

@Paso I did a search on YouTube and there was a chap who had spent a few hours in ED yesterday using his new OQ2 and was very pleased. He had come from a Vive, not sure if it was a vive pro or original but hey it’s a start :)

I didn't watch the whole video, but he seems to be impressed. Can relate.

I tried the quest 2 tonight.

1. With the link cable (not original one). It looks very good, crisper than rift S, even in the distance I like it a lot. I'm contemplating getting the official cable because that, supposedly, charges the headset as well. It will still run out of battery but much slower.

2. Wireless. After watching a couple of videos on how to install Sidequest, drivers, Virtual desktop (you have to buy it on the oculus quest store), I tried ED wireless.
Now there are settings in the VD streamer app that you can adjust to get less lag. The quality I would say is kinda on par with rift s. I could increase the quality in the app so it looks way better but then there is a lot of lag. I haven't experimented a lot with it because I want to watch more videos on how to adjust it to get it to work better. I'm satisfied for a first try.

Regarding other games. It felt so great playing Boneworks wireless. After 10 mins I realised I don't have to turn with the controller stick, I can just turn myself because there is no wire. Very nice experience.
Virtual desktop is being worked on continually, it will get so much better.
For me personally this is a great headset, especially for the price. I'm really glad I got it.

P. S. I think other people might have much better results if they have a proper router. Mine is an all in one type of thing. It came with the broadband from virgin media, hub 3.
I made sure that I separated the frequencies so that the quest is always on the 5ghz 802.11ac.
But I'm pretty sure this hub is no match for any, even, 60-70 £ router out there.

I'll keep trying out different settings and pot here if there are any changes.

Hope you guys are enjoying yours if you ordered.

Got my Quest 2. Played couple of hours in CZ yesterday. I use Q2 wirelessly with Virtual Desktop and old Huawei 5186 5g router.

This is a keeper. Cockpit looks awesome, I can read all the text and everything looks sharp. Flying in space feels different now. Only far away revolving stations look like they are built of legos but when close they look ok, though the grill outside station with narrow lines looks someone had wire cutters. Did not try planetary landing yet.

All in all, I did not buy Q2 for ED. But after this experience I know I will use it for ED.

Setup:
Quest 2
Virtual Desktop
GTX 1060 6gb
16 GB RAM
All in SSD
Ryzen 3600

Nice. What settings did you you in virtual desktop?
I'm going to try later tonight to keep the 5ghz frequency just for the quest 2 and kick everything to the 2.4 one

....though the grill outside station with narrow lines looks someone had wire cutters...
This sounds like ASW kicking in, coupled with the greater/sharper resolution you get to see more and hence the “wires look cut”.

Can’t wait till tomorrow when mine arrives.

I know the price is great for the 64gb headset in its own but once you add in the Oculus link cable and a new head strap your pretty much at the £450 mark. That said if it works as described then wireless and wired high res, with a strong games library sounds good to me.

just for the giggles:
The stupid thing is Facebook didn't need to do this, they're still getting the same telemetry from people using their Oculus account but Zuck's gotten greedy, connecting a user to a real identity makes that data so much more valuable I guess - but if an oculus user is using the same email for Facebook as well then they've already got your ID and can connect the two.
Just hoping someone jailbreaks it sooner cause it's a good headset (and this enforced Facebook account is helping pave the way).
