A Little North American Pack Discussion

As of today, October 25th, it has been exactly 2 months since the Australia Pack (and I’m still loving it and using it) so it may be the right time to stir up some speculation around the next pack. Now, we already know there isn’t going to be anything for the anniversary in a little over a week, which is a shame but it’s whatever. As for when this next pack will come out, I think definitely before the new year, possibly in late November, if not early December would be my pick. The dates I think would make the most sense are November 24th and December 1st, 8th, and 15th.

As for animals, and which types of animal species I’m thinking it’s gonna be 4 animals, (I’ll explain why) and be Temperate/Taiga based, because we haven’t gotten a pack like that yet, and that’s the only one we’re missing. These biomes best relate to North America, specifically Canada. I think this pack will not have an exhibit animal because there is no Temperate/Taiga tank template YET, so maybe it will change with this although there aren’t really any great options for exhibit animals. Here’s my picks for a potential North American Pack

-Moose
-Cougar/Puma/Mountain Lion
-American Black Bear
-North American River Otter OR American Beaver

I’m still tossed on the otter or beaver, it would be nice to have both but I think only one will make it. Maybe we will get the beaver and the otter will come in a SE Asia pack as an Asian Small-Clawed Otter. This pack, as you can see, includes some top wanted animals in the game, the Otter/Beaver, Moose, and Cougar. I think without a doubt by the end of this game’s run, we will have a Cougar and a Moose whether it be in this pack or another, it’s just too desired. The American Black Bear choice is there solely on the repetition of a reskin/odd-ball animal in every pack. The Dall Sheep with the Arctic, Capuchin with SA, and the Dingo with Australia. These are animals that people really wanted to be something else but in my opinion, these end up being one of the best (or in the case of the Dall Sheep, the best!) of the pack.

So I’m interested to see what y’all think about the upcoming pack, because we do know that they are hard at work right now on some new content, as they always are, and trying to improve the game the best they can. Also, what updates would you like to see in the major update along side the DLC. I can’t think of any improvements at the moment, but I’m always satisfied with the updates. Maybe you think they’ll go Europe’s with the DLC, ya never know. Let me know down below!

I think Europe before North America as there are already a few iconic North American species but hardly any at all from Europe. Australia was really obvious for the last DLC and I like the fact that this time it's much less predictable.

I think locks for a NA DLC would be Mountain Lion and Moose. Of course, I thought a Capybara was a lock for SA so know really knows.

What I would personally want to see is eventually two packs for NA. But for the first one, I'm thinking: Moose, Mountain Lion, American Black Bear and North American River Otter. That's two essentially reskins, one modified rig and one brand new animal rig that will take the most of the work.

For a second pack I'd like to see: Coyote, Wolverine, Rocky Mountain Goat and Bighorn Sheep. Personally I'd rather get the Coyote first and Mountain Lion later, but I think it'll be as I listed here instead.

There are of course other NA animals I'd like to see, but these are the ones I'd like to see most. Poor foxes...I DO want to see them but it always seems in every regions there's just more animals I want to see more than them. Give an honorable mention to the Red Fox.

I think there should be another NA Pack later down the line, like way later, probably one of the last ones. And I think it should be an American Southwest/Sonoran Desert theme. If you select “North America, Desert” in the Nature section in the game there are a decent amount of plants that NO ANIMALS can use. That pretty much points to a DLC with animals that can use that. For that pack my choices would be...

-Collared Peccary
-Coyote OR Mexican Wolf
-Coati
-Desert Bighorn Sheep
-Common Chuckwalla (Exhibit)

I think, for the most part, a European DLC is just unessicary. What would it have? The only real animals I would like to see are the Alpine Ibex and Iberian Lynx. I think a “Eurasian Steppe” pack is more reasonable with animal species like Red Deer, Yak, Saiga, Andy Prezwalkski’s Wild Horse, some of those animal species creeping into Europe. But if there is a European DLC at some point, it is definitely not a priority.

That’s your opinion but not one I share. What would it have? There have been several lists made on here and elsewhere but it could be anything from this list to name but a few:

  • Elk (moose)
  • Red deer
  • Roe deer
  • Fallow deer
  • Wild boar
  • Wisent
  • Mouflon
  • Alpine ibex
  • Iberian ibex
  • Chamois
  • Musk ox
  • Eurasian lynx
  • Iberian lynx
  • Wild cat
  • Badger
  • Red fox
  • Arctic fox
  • Eurasian otter
  • Wolverine
  • Beaver
  • Alpine marmot
  • Crested porcupine
  • White stork
  • Eurasian crane
  • Great white pelican
  • Dalmatian pelican
  • Any duck, goose or swan species

As we already have a number of North American species, I expect to get more but it is definitely not a priority.

I completely agree with markun. Not very surprising, as many animals on his list were (also) suggested by me in previous threads. ;)

I do agree, though, that NA has more interesting candidates than Europe. Just because they have many of the european species and then some more. (I would love to see the Cougar in the game, for example and also Alligators. Both definitely not present in Europe.)

However, exactly because of the wider range I would appreciate, if the lists for a (very desirable!) NA DLC could try not to “cannibalize” the already smaller European list. Mooses do live not only in NA, but also in Scandinavia. Beavers and Otters can be found in European rivers as well - actually in increasing numbers, by the way. (Their short term introduction is unlikely due to well known game mechanical reasons, though.) Red Deers do not only roam Canadian forests.

Beside that, I still vote for the inclusion of an uncontested European animal: The European Lynx (over the Iberian variant. But this is - and I want to strongly emphasize this - solely a very personal preference due to my childhood memories.)

I agree. It would be great if Europe grabbed the Moose, Lynx, Ibex, then the beaver or otter. Then North America got the Puma, Roosevelt Elk, Otter/Beaver, then either the alligator or some kind of bird. (We need more!)

Of course if they just raised the number of species per DLC this would solve so many problems. One things for sure. if they add another damn copy-paste bear... I'm going to be so stressed out about the future of this game, and how few animals we're going to get through.

I would ally love to get a beaver, loved them in ZT2. You could give them branches enrichment and they built their den from it.

In NA pack I would love to see:

  • beaver
  • moose
  • wolverine
  • puma

If I had to pick up 4 animals, I would go for:
  • Cougar
  • Moose
  • American Alligator
  • Raccoon

I can't think of many buildings pieces that would fit a North American set, so if we get less pieces and more animals, my extra candidates are:

  • Wolverine
  • Prairie dog

I hope that California sea lions and American beavers are part of an aquatic DLC though.

One that could be interesting would be the Cuban Crocodile...it's a more terrestrial crocodilian than either the american alligator or crocodile. They're also more endangered

I definitely wouldn't mind more than four habitat animals, and I really want a wolverine, but as far as building goes I'm just throwing out that we don't have an actual North American theme - just "New World". I think a western theme would work really well, or is that too close to the rustic feel the game has already?

If by "western theme" you mean the classic wild west buildings like a saloon, sheriff station, bank... I think that theme fits better for a theme park, but not for a zoo. If you mean something like a ranch, log cabins and so on, that could work for me.

Either works for me honestly, I think what I was thinking of is more a mix of the two. Obviously shells that looks exactly like saloons, sheriff stations etc wouldn't fit the theme, but something very grassland/desert feeling, sort of like the Australian theme, but with more reliance on wood rather than metal.

FWIW though I love the idea of themes, the animals are and almost always will be the bigger draw with me. European Bavarian theme excepting if we were to ever get that.

The wild west town would work great for a lot of it, sure there's the saloon, but it's also a major design type that is rather common for things. The walkways with overhangs could also make for some interesting options with a zoo as a shift away from the various vehicle tours.

Having a horseback trail "ride" or burros, perhaps even adding in things like a bike trail option for it as well if you want a more modern look, would be an interesting option for some exhibits. Camels would fit as well since it's still very common for zoos to have them trained for short rides for kids. Having kayaks and/or canoes with a water ride would also be interesting, same with things like a swan boat thing that I've seen in several.

I'd be happy with this. My personal preference would be for Europe to get the beaver as a celebration of all the successful reintroduction programs over the last few decades and the benefits that has had on biodiversity as a whole.
