How can it be backwards compatible when these are new consoles to be released?
Its just confirming that ED will run on the next gen consoles, thats all.
They confirmed that on a livestream weeks ago - didn't stop the DOOMsters DOOMing though ...
I still think the funniest console DOOM was "maybe they'll make us start new CMDRs on new consoles"

Any game (including ED) that runs on an Xbox One will run on a Series X. Can't say for sure for the PlayStation.
I guess the solution would be to change the word "with" to "on", but you know what they mean.
And it is backwards from a next gen perspective. From a current gen perspective its forwards compatible.
