Exploring ! How do you find Stations ?

This bugs me. Our ships are slow... today's modern fighter jets travel much faster than that. The F-15 a 38year old fighter has a top speed of 737m/s. Speed of sound is 340m/s. Our standard drives should be 10x what they are now, especially in space.
The game play reasons for this have been explained, debated and discussed a lot elsewhere so I won't repeat that. But there will be a need for an alternate higher speed for travel if we're to explore planets so it's moot. It'll come. But it won't involve combat.

Absolutely. It wasn't listed or shown on the system map either.
I specifically went hunting for stations by checking the system maps first. Making doubly sure that they were unknowns.

I can't remember the name of the system... Which brings to mind how handy an automatic flight log would be!

I do recall that I hit the scanner while still in shift-drive though... and that the station popped up after the scanner did it's thing.

Excellent another great thing to add to this game :D

And just in case you didn't know player logs will be coming into the game :D

Hadn't considered this before. Maybe supercruise (frameshift) will drop into that mode as you enter the atmosphere.

Excellent!... I think I don't read too far into the developer plans for the game because I don't want to be disappointed. I mean, if you don't know your wife is making Rib-eye Steak with Aussie-fries... you'd settle for corn-dogs if you're hungry enough. :)

I've seen missions on the bulletin boards to stations that aren't on system maps. Presumably the stations exist in game it's just that no one has found them yet or is it a bug?

There are plenty of examples of system maps showing stations but no planets, but if you visit those stations and spam the discovery scanner you'll soon find the missing planets.

I'm sure there will be some secret bases that you have to find by exploring... Looking forward to that actually. They could have rare/unique items for sale, or interesting prices.

I think it would be good if you had some stations in the game that had some stealth technology so the ships scanners you buy at shipyards cant detect them. For example military research stations where you have to get specialist equipment before undertaking the mission so that when you are in the system you can find the stations. I'm sure there will be places like prison colonies where you need permits like there was in the previous 2 versions of the game but something more than just permits would add to the game. I'm not a member of the ddf and havent trolled through pages of posts so apologies if something like this has already been discussed and is planned for inclusion.

The game is still only at the beta stage remember but I think the speeds might change a bit when the game is finished. I don't think the speeds will change too much mind you for the reasons that others have mentioned.

superb news sargon thanks, I was hoping that there would be "hidden" stations, even though I never came across one

Yeh, that might work but thinking about how that would be executed throws up a couple issues, like mass locking. I think it would maybe work by what you have targeted. If it's planet-bound, the super cruise will drop you just outside of mass lock range, then allow you to only use this "middle drive speed" once you're mass locked by a planet. So you're free to whiz about up to 20kms - or whatever limit they decide is best - so long as you're mass locked by a planet but the moment you exit that range you automatically enter super cruise.

This will also enable fast inter-city or inter-continental travel as well as atmospheric entry and also when leaving the planet. Obviously, not all planets have an atmosphere so the mechanic would work wholly on mass lock status.

I for one loved the rush of launching from the planet surface and hurtling into space at massive speeds. So this would be a great way to implement it. Launch, nose up, thrusters only until clear of the city/dock limits, engage "ultra-sonic drive", accelerate to 20kms, clear the planet's mass lock range, accelerate into SC and away you go :)

your post has made my imagination go off on a tangent, but I really hope to see weather, and its effects. for instance especially if your not using your FSD at all, just thrusters, I'd like my ship to feel like it's being buffeted if i'm trying to land in a storm. Hear the rain rattling off the canopy, should I upgrade my cockpit to have a windscreen wiper ;)

Really hope we do see dynamic weather

That would be incredible, it's a really good idea.

Speaking for myself though, I loved the original Elite in 1984, I hated frontier, because of its combat at relativistic speeds.

Combat in FE2 was a doddle once you realised the trick was to a) turn the engines off and b) let the other guy do all the work. So as soon as a hostile turned up I'd switch off engines and just drift, while he'd fly around angrily for a bit to line up an attack run. Eventually he'd run at me so his position on screen stayed the same but his distance tumbled. I knew he'd start shooting at 5km, so I'd point my ship about a third of a screen below him, and when he got to 8km I gave a quick dab on the thrusters. He'd scream overhead filling the space I'd just been with hot laser death, and I'd just flip over casually and shoot him on the way past. Then I'd do the same thing again until I won. It was pretty much foolproof, the only thing you had to be aware of was needed to make more effort to get out of the way of an Imperial Courier otherwise you'd be rammed.

I'd love to think it's a case of the stations remaining undiscovered, but my money's on "bug".

I've been all over LP102-320 but can't find Regiomontanus Point, neither can anyone else, one of the stations has the wrong name (Mitra Palace is referred to as Mitra Oasis in all of the bulletin board missions) and none of the stellar bodies there will resolve correctly, they almost all show as Unknown for me and nothing I can do gets them to scan.
