Odyssey and RTX

what's the history with gfx update and ED?
has something similar happened in the last 6 years and if so what was the uptake from FDev like?

Elite is a game that needs to work on as many computers as possible. Spending development time, effort and money on a feature that is only useful to the less than 0.1% that have cards that can handle ray tracing to a bare minimum level is a waste of resource, better put to other elements of the game.

Currently only the 3090 which is in extremely short supply is capable of hitting a barely acceptable level of performance in ray tracing.

The 3080, 6800xt and lower level cards just cannot properly handle ray tracing unless in the case of NVIDIA they lower the display resolution using proprietary and therefore dead end solutions such as DLSS.

One thing that gamers often dont think about is the artistic design of a game to create its "look". Incorporating ray tracing may ruin the visual ambience and style of Elite.
A similar thing applies to adding multiple light sources. It may be technically more realistic, but will it look as good.

I agree with all of this apart from the multiple light sources (or more accurately multiple shadow-casting suns)...

I realise there are probably major efficiency advantages you get from only having one sun and not have it cast shadows from rings or other planetary bodies, but I think these are things that just NEED to be done in a game that's about visiting star systems.

My guess is that there's something prohibitively expensive about doing the maths for these things at such mind-bogglingly gigantic scales -- low-res shadow-mapping type solutions don't work when the shadow of a gas giant's rings has to progress over the edge over a 1 meter boulder. And maybe these sort of considerations (that other games don't have) also causes issues for ray-tracing.

But I'm just guessing!

Raytracing is only really being used to make stuff shiny right now - better to wait until art directors have chilled out a bit and it get's used... more effectively.

Current use of it remind me of the early days of "bloom"

Geez...

Before the PS5 and new Xbox, I would have said it doesn't make sense to work on adding ray tracing. However, now that ray tracing is in both of the big mainstream consoles, it will become more mainstream in games. It would make sense for FDev to add ray tracing to their engine if not just to keep up with industry standard visuals going forward. Whether or not ray tracing will make it into ED, not sure, but if it come for free with Cobra engine updates as part of the engine's natural evolution, then great!

here's a wild guess. Nobody working at fdev really knows how their engine works because whoever (or whichever team) wrote it is long gone and left a mess or the way the developers are managed keeps anyone from becoming an expert in any given part of it.

That's, why we dont get improvements in the ai. Why we dont get improvements on a trade system. Why we dont get bugfixes without breaking things and why even those bugfixes take so long. Why we can't have proper iterative improvements at a pace on par with other games. Why we dont see new features added to the game's engine like ray tracing or vulkan support or hdr or putting all the unused cores your computer has available to say...simulating persistent npcs that are currently off-screen, etc. Why we can't have a reworked launcher that doesn't rely on dotnet4 so proper proton play works out of the box. and so on.

I imagine there is pressure to support all of the eye candy available on the new amd hardware in the consoles. That certainly benefits the pc world, since these new consoles - currently - are on par with current graphics api's and tech. Wouldn't hold your breath though. There's probably an equal chance of star citizen being officially released considering fdev is busy bugfixing their fps clone.

DSLL and the knock-on of TAA for everyone else would do more for Elite's visuals that ray traced reflections at the moment. Maybe when we get shiny cities it'll be a worthwhile thing. There aren't that many surfaces in the game that would really benefit at the moment.

Next gen shadows and global illumination seem more performant when done with techniques other than ray tracing (see the UE5 demo and Demon's Souls).

The reality is, being as big as this game is and having that much potential, virtually anything could be done and it would add to the game.

But, how about we fix instancing issues first? Then ship interiors? Then everything else there are to fix?

RTX as in Nvidia or are you referring to general ray-tracing?

With consoles lacking RTX/Nvidia you can forget about Fdev programming for Nvidia cards only.. At least I think that that is a bad business decision.

Yeah, title should be DXR or just ray tracing now that AMD based consoles and cards are (almost) available.

I was going to make a thread on ray tracing but yeah, both next-gen consoles support it along with newer PC video cards.

Auto-HDR on Xbox Series S|X does add more 'punch' to the visuals, but I'd still like to see a native HDR version of the game. From the black of space to bright stars ("agghhh! My eyes!!" 😆) , ED should be a great example of what HDR can do. I'd actually prefer true HDR to be added before ray-tracing at this point.

Hold your horses there fella, never mind Ray Tracing.... Frontier haven't even enabled 4k on the PS5 yet, or Ultra textures on either the XBox Series X or the PS5. The consoles may be new but the settings are "last gen" still :D

Right, that’s what I mean. They might be encouraged to update their engine to maintain graphical parody with the gaming industry now that those consoles came out. Not sure if that will translate to ED if they do upgrade their engine, but I’d be pleased if it did

Both new consoles are now out. What was Current gen is now Previous gen, and so is Elite. They need to at least update the graphical settings available on the current gen of consoles, or get left behind. Hello Games have updated NMS already of course.

Comparing to hello games isn't really fair. It's almost like those developers like their game and play it.
