Just bought an Oculus Quest 2 and thinking elite is a great place to try it out. Will it work?

I have Elite and Horizons expansion but moved on form the game some years ago. Now I have just ordered the Quest 2 and have never used VR before. Will it work well with Elite and is it simple to use or is there a lot I need to do to get it working?

I’ve only tried the original Quest with Elite but I think the process will be very similar - unless you’re going down the wireless route (which is a bit more complex) you’ll need a compatible USB3 cable to Link it to your PC.

Install the Oculus software to your PC, enable “external sources” in its settings, select “HMD headphones” in Elite’s 3D settings and restart the game. Fairly painless process.

There are some Quest threads already in this sub-forum with plenty of info and common problems, so it’d be worth flicking through some of those. There are also detailed instructions for if you want to go wireless, as well.

To run Elite in VR you will need a high end gaming pc, you can’t just download and play it on Quest 2. To use Quest 2 you can either use the USB cable called link cable, the official oculus one costs around $80 or you can get a third party one for around $30.

If you want to go wireless then you need to get oculus virtual desktop app off the oculus store, then go to the developers website and get the VD patch then unless you have steam version of ED you’ll need to get steam keys and instal the steam version. Lastly steam is a bit fiddly with controllers so a bit of playing around gets you working. Sorry should add you need a pc hardwired network with a wireless router preferably in line of sight to the headset

I have all the above and personally prefer the convenience of the link cable coupled with the oculus tray tool and setting Link Cable to 1080ti/2080ti standard settings.

Thanks for the replies, I did redeem my Steam key and install through steam. I've a pretty high end rig so expect to be ok there. I did indeed see a few more threads on this so good info. A question on wireless set up though, which looks difficult to do. If I will be sitting in my chair using a HOTAS is wireless really needed? I have ordered the cable for PC connection with the Quest so I'd imagine that wireless isn't really necessary for a game that you are sitting down for.

No, for me, on Elite I prefer the cable set up but run through Oculus Dash as opposed to Steam, you only need steam if your going for Virtual Desktop - the paid app. I find Oculus HMDs work best with Oculus Dash.

I should add for Xplane, I prefer the VD environment to the Link Cable, however my guess will be once Link comes out of Beta it will be better than VD, then it comes down to preferences as to if you want to play desktop VR games wirelessly.

I’ve never found the cable from my Rift S to be any sort of hindrance with Elite, but one thing I’d do for the Quest is get a clip to route the cable around the back of the HMD otherwise it just sort of hangs off the front side. The default head strap isn’t exactly fantastic so anything that stops the visor getting unseated from your ideal eye position is worth getting.

I think the official Link cable comes with a clip but I’m sure lower cost solutions are doable :)

I have just changed from my RiftCV to a Quest 2 vis Link - I get a weird flicker constantly every time I move my head - given the quest is better than the old rift CV is there some settings i should change ...

Have you installed the latest update?
https://forums.oculusvr.com/community/discussion/95181/quest-2-quest-build-23-0-release-notes
From the notes...
  • With this release, Quest 2 headsets can now run natively at 90 Hz by default. This higher frame rate has been shown to provide a smoother visual experience and improve your time spent in VR overall.
    • To start, system level software will run at 90 Hz. Additional app adoption is based on developer discretion. Developers will have full-access to this feature as part of the upcoming SDK release.
I don't use the Quest 2 myself, but this seems like it may help you with the problem you are having.

Any tips on using the galaxy map. I’d imagine I’ll have to learn to use it with the HOTAS with key bindings but it’s not easy.

Welcome to the wonderful world of VR Commander.
I use my CH Flightstick to "fly" through the galaxy map and have mapped hat switches and buttons on both the Flightstick and my CH throttle for all the up, down, rotate, select etc. After a while it all becomes second nature and I can zoom about all over the map no problem.
Typing is of course a pain, but sometimes I guess right. Most times though I have to break the immersion and peek. When my HP G2 turns up at the end of the month I will look into setting up an onscreen keyboard somehow.
Stick with it and have fun.

Thank you I’ll do some practice with the map later. Right now I’m not going far anyway enjoying myself. I had my canopy blown out while bounty hunting earlier. That was some experience. I was able to stand up and lean down to see the HUD in the very bottom left corner where my canopy was still intact. Couldn’t do that without VR.

Please tell us which graphic card you use and how is the performance with an Oculus Quest 2 as it has a "high" resolution display. Project Cars 2 is also very nice to play with a VR Headset. I also would like to buy a Quest 2 and i'm asking myself if a RTX2070 would be sufficient for this! Greetings!

GRX 1080 Ti. I find the graphics excellent.

According to oculus all RTX20* is sufficient. If you have steam there’s a good VR ready hardware test you can run.

edit: before I got the oculus I read a lot about needing a high end gaming computer. I did get a pretty high end rig but it’s almost two years old now. It’s got no problems with oculus and scored ‘excellent’ on the steam test. Some of the stuff I read had me imagining liquid cooling and overclocking. I don’t think it’s as hardware intensive as it’s made out to be.

"High end" is a bit dubious.
And makes people think they need $5000 rigs with 4 top of the line GPU's and custom waterloop cooling.
You don't.
And yes, in 2015-16 you might have needed a $4-5k monster rig to get great VR, but that has changed, now you can get great for for half that, and good VR for $1k.

The majority of PC players are on laptops, a i5, with GTX 1070 or equivalent is actually pretty high end.
It's also not helped that everybody including the VR graphics presets want's you to run PD\supersampling into the heavens when it is the greatest performance degradation you can do, and for very little actual benefit.
On a 1070, or 2060 level card, I'd aim for no SS in elite, and don't use the VR settings at all in elite.
And be careful with ambient occlusion and volumetric effects.
It should do just fine.

My now three years old rig, with an i7 8700k and a 1080ti is honestly considered still very high end.

I used an MSI gaming laptop for my first 3 years in VR ED. It would be considered low spec now, but it worked fine. Never had a problem.
i7 6700HQ, NVidia GTX 1060(M), 16GB 2133 Ram 128GB M.2. On an HTC Vive HMD.
Now I use a Q2 +Link with a R9 3900X, RTX2080, 16GB 3200mhz RAM, 2TB NVMe M.2
I have the Index but I actually prefer to use the Q2.

The Index has terrible god flares. It ruins the experience for me. I constantly feel the need to adjust the Index on my face trying to see through the god flares. The lack of black is worse than it is on the Quest2. It's like you're playing in a 70's smokers pub on free ciggies night. (They won't let me use the F A Gs word. in this post haha.) For me, nothing beats the crisp deep blacks of the OG HTC Vive with the lens mod. Sure it had the awful SDE but, with that lens mod you can look around with your eyes & not feel like you have to have that fresnel sweet spot glued to your pupils. If someone comes out with a lens mod for the OQ2, no other HMD would get a look in. The Index has a slightly bigger FOV. Picture quality is comparable between the Index & OQ2. As is the SDE, or lack of it. Sound quality is good on the Index. But add an HTC DAS to the OQ2 & it's near as damn it, the same. The tracking is superb on the Index. As it is on the OG Vive, (same hardware). You just can't beat those lighthouses. The OQ2 tracking is good too though. Just not as crisp. I hate the Valve controllers. They just don't seat naturally in the hands. You end up with thumb strain & that irritating feeling you get when trying to drive a car straight with a flat tyre. But best of all, the option of wireless freedom & the lightness of the OQ2 just steals the prize.

Thanks for that, its interesting, coming from the Rift CV1 the first thing I did was buy an specific OQ2 game which was Vader Immortal and immediately saw the blacks issue. I switched back to my CV1 and black was black then back to OQ2 and it was a grey mess. Ive since realised that its just a compromise that you have to live with (there are many benefits over the CV1) and for the most part ED is great. For sound and fit, after much consideration like you I went the DAS route and I am very pleased with the result, very CV1 like.

Finally at launch the Link Cable was very poor for me, but now its out of Beta its like a whole new headset, really impressive quality and robustness.

While I would say I am still finding my feet with this headset I am very happy with it now. I was also pleased to see the possible option of 144hz on the horizon, no idea what that would mean for me but please none the less that there are still lots of plans for improvements to this headset.
