Hardware & Technical Well, looks like I'm out until at least Beta 3, too...

Not because of bugs. Not because I'm sick of grinding. Not because of griefers, struggling to make a quid trading... Or any other similar excuse.

I bought a new graphics card, you see... I decided that getting more than 10fps in the really dense asteroid fields would probably add to the overall enjoyment of the game.

So, I ditched my GTX750 and bought a GTX 760 - which, according to the specs, is a good performance bump.

Except... I didn't bother to check my power supply... And it seems I don't have the right type of power cable to help power the new card, and really, I am also 50w short with my current PSU...

So, with that in mind, I will now save up for a new power supply, but seeing as I have a motorcycle in the garage that has been off the road way too long, and the parking fine I got whilst buying the card (which, oddly enough, is more than the cost of a very good power supply...), I decided it's best to wait and do a bit of an upgrade to the CPU as well. Seeing as I'm running a dual core Athlon X2.

With luck, I'll find a second hand rig on a forum I can cannibalise! But until then - enjoy your gaming, whilst I enjoy watching from the sidelines!

TL: DR - before you upgrade your stuff, take a breath, and check what else needs an upgrade!!!

Yeah man, sounds like your CPU is a definite bottleneck there. It doesn't matter if your GPU is screaming fast if your CPU can't send the instructions fast enough. Even the 750 should be fine for E:D, but you have neglected to upgrade the rest of your machine.

Get yourself a modern CPU, some proper ram, and a new mainboard.

idk whats your cpu but get some new gears

get yourself a server mobo , with dual cpus, i think the fps will be astonishing ;)

Anyone who is upgrading any component needs to check the power supply to see if it is can take the new load.

Please remember that Amps on the 12v rail are just as important, maybe even more important than the wattage that the power supply can push out.

In order to avoid any confusion about component balancing I advise getting a power supply that has a single 12v rail rather than multiple rails.

Check that the Amps on the 12v rail are enough.

Use a PSU calculator to see if the wattage of the PSU is enough with you current setup. I will link a good one here.

It is probably a good idea to get a certified PSU to ensure efficiency. There is no point skimping on a PSU because if it goes bang there is a good chance it will take many other components with it.

A decent brand also helps. If you are in the UK I just did a quick search and found this for £59.98 GBP

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CX7...=UTF8&qid=1413530119&sr=8-2&keywords=750w+psu

With more time and effort put in you could probably find one on sale or on a good offer but that seems decent for the price. I would say that £50 GBP is probably the minimum you will have to spend unfortunately.

Yed... I did that, and ended up with changing not ony the graph card.... but also the power supply, mb, cpu, ram, ssd.... quite expensive when you just want a new graphic card :) :)

The idea of dual Xeons for gaming has been around for along time. Xeons are not overclockable so if you want to overclock which is a free performance boost Xeons are not the way to go.

Xeons are also terribly expensive unless you get an older one off ebay that has probably been running 24x7 in some server somewhere.

Performance wise you will not see much difference as the number of cores past 4 for the vast majority of games makes no difference.

Here is a quick comparison between a Intel Xeon E5 2687W vs Intel Core i7 4960X

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E5-2687W-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4960X

While the 4790X is not exactly mainstream you can see that there is no real world benefit for gamers.

An i5/i7 "K" or FX 9590 will be more than enough for any gamer.

Not that an upgrade is a bad thing but that was the wrong component to choose. My gtx470 handles the game fine, over 40fps. What slows me down is my old CPU - q6600 quad - but it's enough to run the game smoothly.

Sadly, upgrading the CPU usually means two other components needed. In your case it'll be three with the power supply. It needn't cost too much, with the GPU you have an i5 would run ED really well.

Yeah dude, Its gotta be your cpu that's the issue. I'm running a GTX580 and have a steady 75 FPS on max settings the graphics of this game aren't that all to impressive....

I'm running a 660.
Max settings when on my gaming monitor.
Low settings when on my OR DK2.

It's coping quite well tbh.

Getting a 980 tmrw though as I always promised myself a top end spanking new card when Elite 4 was released...been saying this for 14 years :D

I'm out too

Looks like I'm out too. Can't get past SSOD and I've cleared my save so many times. Boring starting scratch every time. :(

Just installed a brand new SSD and a bare bones install of Win8.1. Still no good. Hopefully beta 3 will be more stable as I love the beta process but can't do much at the moment. It's ticketed but I'm sure they're very busy.

Good news is beta 3 is less than 2 weeks away. :p

Am on that mail out also - specified a saturday deliver as we're both working - hope it's tomorrow rather than the saturday after

I was hoping a Phenom X4 965 BE would deal with the CPU - seems they come along cheap enough every so often. I'm looking at a good power supply, about $100 or so, though kinda hope I don't need to go the whole mother board cpu route too, as I'm sure that's a fresh install of Windows...

Oh, did I mention the case? Mine is low profile, so I need to leave the cover off to ensure the graphics card fits!

Now I remember why I stuck to consoles. And then someone decided it would be a good idea to bring back my childhood all time favourite game...

It does sound like the CPU is the bottleneck, my 480GTX plays the game really well. My i5 2500k (oc to 4.4GHz) never maxes out any core in the game. I'd like to try adding another 480GTX (because I can't afford a 9xx) and see how different it is but these things like power.

I have a pair of 480gtx cyclones sat here doing noting is someone from the uk wants them for a small price?

What psu were you running? I have an Antec 650w so I doubt it'd cope.

I had troubles for years with a computer i bought (a now retired but still vary capable i7 920 build) that would shutdown on certain situations, some repeatable some not. Before i knew better, i downgraded the GFX card (then from a GeForce 285 to a 240 and the problems stopped. When i replaced that 240 with a brand new 660ti, the shutdowns returned. It was then that i found that the problem had always been with the PSU, a 1000W beast from a not really reliable brand. (Won't name it because now they appear to make better products and would maybe be unfair).
Anyways, the best advice is to get a 80+ certified PSU, from a reliable manufacturer. I'm happy with an XFX 650.

Oh Cm'on, yo can use this cheap piece of wire as I do to power up my GPU
it's a CPU Power Supply converter, I've been using that foar an R7 GPU without a problem since 6 months ago.

I'm waiting for more info on what resolution the CV Rift will be before I next upgrade anything.

I know my aging GTX 670 won't handle it (the cv rift), as it drops well below 50FPS in those dense asteroid fields just on a single 1080p monitor at high/med settings, but I'm hoping my aging I5 3670 @4.6 OC'd will be sufficient processing power, paired up with whatever GPU is required for the CV Rift when it is launched.

If you can get by at the moment, I'd give it more time, as I'm sure news must be imminent of when the CV Rift is going to launch, and at what res. I'm sure it's going to be a game changer, and worth saving up for whatever is required.
