Hardware & Technical Well, looks like I'm out until at least Beta 3, too...

Oh Cm'on, yo can use this cheap piece of wire as I do to power up my GPU
it's a CPU Power Supply converter, I've been using that foar an R7 GPU without a problem since 6 months ago.

If this was like my video cards it wasn't as much the cable but that the power supply didn't have the umph to power the card.

feel your pain , i hope a dual core can handle the game for you.

good luck

I'll be getting a quad core, just matter of waiting for one to turn up... Don't really want to cough up $130 for a brand new chip for the dated AM3 motherboard I have, especially when I see quad core CPU's pop up for it every so often for about $30.

Having said that, a good used motherboard and higher spec quad core i5 is probably the way to go for best bang/buck.

I did consider that, for a short time, but the reality is (and I had to take remove my PSU to see the specs, because they were written on the secion that was hard up against the case...), that my real problem is...

That. My PSU is 450w, 500w is the suggested minimum. Not normally being the "minimum' kind of person, I'm just going to go with something in the 750w+ region, this should allow for future upgrades without concern.

I miss ED. I was halfway to Evergreen 2 nights ago, I really wanted to get there...

something to look forward to in B3, I guess...

I think most people would find it hard to make a quid trading, especially since the Pound has probably been a dead currency for over a thousand years at this point.

I was going to suggest helpful things but it seems literally(figuratively) everybody has beat me to it :p

I got a Corsair PSU 950 when I got my upgrade pack. There is a shop that you can pick a decent 'upgrade pack' and cost about 520£ and you get:
• G.Skill Ares 16GB DDR3 PC-12800 1600MHz (F3-1600C9D-16GAR) (2x8GB)
• ASUS Z87-A - ATX / Z87
• Intel Core i5-4670K - 4 threads / 3,40GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) / 6MB / Socket 1150 (Boxed) (84W) (Unlocked)
• Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 2GB (GV N760OC-2GD (REV. 2.0))

so the PSU was needed
(Note, when *I* upgraded it was a older config)

Some version of Quad Core is dirt cheap these days, especially if you dont insist on Intel. I have a 6 core AMD part in my machine, and even it seems overkill for most gaming.

nVidia 660 Ti or better for a GPU for modern gaming, though you could get away with less for this game in particular right now. I have one if anyone in the US is interested. Recently upgraded to an AMD 290 4GB. The 600 Ti was fine for ED but not so much for other stuff.

8GB of main memory is a minimum, IMO. 16GB is nice but not necessary. 1600MHz minimum. Faster is better, but not at a large price premium.

Cant speak to mobos other than my own (990FXA). AMD doesnt mess with you like Intel does. The same mobo will usually last a while and you can still upgrade CPUs. Intel makes you sacrifice your mobo every other CPU upgrade.

750watt PS. Have had it a while. Closed loop cooler for CPU. 3rd CPU for it. Good paste.

I would recommend 750 watts, or thereabouts, for anyone not planning to build a multi-GPU rig. It will handle one old card, and probably two newer cards as they are more efficient. If you want three cards, you need a bigger PS

6 year old machine with new gtx760 over clocked here( specs in sig). Runs from 30-60 fps depending on where I am. Perfectly playable, probably being bottlenecked but it's saved me 400 upgrading for the moment.

I was hoping a Phenom X4 965 BE would deal with the CPU - seems they come along cheap enough every so often. I'm looking at a good power supply, about $100 or so, though kinda hope I don't need to go the whole mother board cpu route too, as I'm sure that's a fresh install of Windows...
Even if you find one, your still buying a 5 year old CPU. Yes, technically it meets the minimum requirements (quad core faster than 2Ghtz) , but do you really expect a 5 year old CPU to play Elite correctly? The motherboard has much older technology.

It might work, but don't expect it to. You're playing with tech that is just a bit on the wrong side of history.

It actually works with the Athlon X2 I have, and a GTX750 at 30fps, just not so hot in an asteroid field...

What about an Asus P8H77-V S1155 , with a 3rd gen 4 core i5 of some description? I can grab one of those boards for $65...

I'd do this. Don't forget you might need new RAM as well (I don't know what you have).

An i5 is an excellent choice.

I've since noticed that newer gen chipset motherboards are not much more expensive brand new (about $100 for an H97 or whatever it's called) So I think I'll just buy one of those. I'll keep an eye out for a 3rd or 4th Gen i5. Until then, I've decided that a 750w Seasonic Gold 80+ PSU is probably the way to go, and I got a Zalman HD503 case for dirt cheap, which will work nicely with the HTPC portion of the system.

Man, I'm itching to get playing again, soooo painful not not be putting a few hours of flight time in each night!
