Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I stand to differ, sales for KSP were quite surprising.. It made a lot less money selling at $10 a pop or so. But still, it was so hugely popular for a quite hardcore space sim where you have no goal to speak of (just as many sandbox games like Minecraft, i'll give that).
Also beware of the "echo box" effect of forums, like that one or CiG's Spectrum. You'll hear a very vocal minority. My view on the subject as a developer is these people should be left alone in their echo box, and devs should deliver a coherent and strong vision, and this is what leads to success. "Design by committee" always leads to bland, awkward products. Not that SC is already awkward enough...

I don't think that quite fits WW2-like spacegame. Anyway, I think the success of KSP is particularly down to its ease and accessibility of realistic orbital mechanics. I know it's been used educationally and it has a way to display and explore orbits and manouvers graphically and with playful tools. You learn how it works intuitively. Then it's got the rocket builder part which appeals to quite some people too. It's overall a very easy builder for complex topic.

Nice post and good points.
For me the model to follow is Planetside 1 (PS2 is less fun for me). It's a goal that can be achieved in a less extent by CIG.
The balance air-air, ground-ground and air-ground was pretty effective and the game was fun for lone warriors, small squads and huge battles. I've never found in any game the feeling of the bridge battles of PS1 (or PS2) where you start the battle at 2vs2 to finish at hundreds.
When you are part of operations like this ones, it's a great feeling
Hundreds of players Srry but that's ain't going to happened at least not with the current game net-code....I been saying the same thing for almost 6-7 years and still waiting to be proven wrong....also CryEngine/Lamberyard is notoriously "bad" in this type of things and when I was saying those things back then and how I can not see CIG handling this problem in"few"years when game was supposed to be finished White Knights laugh at me and want to burn me on the stick.....First it was:" just wait for a couple of weeks and you will see"...then it was "few month and they will totally rework-netcode"....then "Magic Germans comming they will handle easily this problem"..."Star Engine!!!"..."Server meshing is the real deal"...."Lamberyard Switch and it will be done"..."Object Container Streaming(OCS)will change everything" ....on and on...and on...and on......like that for almost a decade and guess what the netcode still sucks and we still have the major problems when we have dozen of players in the same instance...honestly now even 30-40 players looks like a dream.......sure it is a bit better then 6-7 years ago(mostly thx to the OCS)but this is so insignificant step forward and so faaaaaar away from the Croberts promise of hundreds/thousands players per instance that is not even funny anymore....

So do "escape" pods have superior propulsion systems to the ship they are "escaping" from? Aren't they just ejection pods to save the life of the pilot, who will then get captured or killed by the enemy?

I think in real setting you likely wouldnt have the means or time to crush pods. In games? When they look just like debris you might get away with it. Who knows - you could also just despawn and teleport player to save point. It'a not like games were life sims that model every nook and cranny, no matter what crazed zealots dream up in their fevers.

I am going to guess that in the fevered mind of Chris Roberts they have onboard lifeform detection systems in the future. After all they had them in Star Wars and that was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

This is not a lifeform you are looking for:

@Agony_Aunt : weird sentence.
Perhaps the idea that even if the fight is lost by advance, the Tevarin go for it (where a human will preserve his ship and fly away) because they don't care about destruction of their ships, they can escape whenever they want with the pod.

Which is backing down from a fight. If they don't back down, then they would stay in the ship until it goes boom.

This is just really badly written lore.

I'm guessing the escape pods aren't actually implemented yet anyway. I'll be suitable amazed if they are.

Lethality explains why the price of JPGs goes up

Did you read my post? That's exactly what economics is.

The wages go up because cost of living goes up so the price to create these ships... goes... up.

Yup, you heard it right. CIG have to make ships more expensive over time because devs want higher salaries over time.

Live to fight another day? It makes no sense but is the best I can do unless they Escape Pods turn into them Star Trek things that just crash into the ship and open up to board it...

Well, to give further context, this is a Tevarin ship. The Tevarin people are bird like and somehow have a culture like Imperial Japan.

Now, the Japanese also didn't tend to back down from fight. Loss of honour and all though. And they were quite well known for fighting to the death and suicidal attacks. An escape pod really doesn't fit the Tevarin.

My guess is that Chris said, i want an escape pod on that thing. So they had to scramble to add it, at least in lore, even if it doesn't actually work.
