Newcomer / Intro Finding a role to play: A Fuel Rat maybe ?

I don't think you're ready yet. If you're looking for a goal and want to be a fuel rat then I'd start with planning your very own deep space expedition first just to get the experience.

This. Fuel Rats are awesome, and it's a lofty goal to want to join them. But I think you need more practical experience in game. Go to Colonia and back or something at least before taking on such a responsibility is what I would suggest. You need the right ship, outfitting and experience to perform such duties.

It would not do to have someone out there counting on you to arrive tout suite and instead have a thread here working it out step by step :)

Indeed. Wombat could end up being the first fuel rat that needs to call the fuel rats... 😂

...but that would be a cool story! If you’re having fun Wombat then go for it! 👍

I'll just chime in and say that the Fuel Rats are a wonderful organization and trying to join them is a good idea.

You'll have to learn a bunch of stuff, and upgrade your ship, etc. but it'll be worth it, I think, even if in the end you don't join. Go for it, and see where it takes you!
So far so good.(y) But I've a way to go. However, I'm getting there ....................... s l o w l y ;)
Yes squad membership is not necessary, and of my 4 PC rats, only one of them is a member of the squadron - two others are members of Hutton Orbital Truckers squadron.

You are very welcome, good to hear your registration issue may be resolved. Feel free to ask any questions or, once you have access to our IRC and join #ratchat you will be most welcome to ask any questions there and have a lot more people to give you answers. I wasn't sure if you had the link but thought there was no harm in posting it just in case. I'm sure you'll be able to follow the rest without too much problem - after all, if I was able to as a woman in her 60s, I'm sure anyone can. :D
The re-direction to that link was very timely. I'd overlooked it!
I'm IRC'ing and #ratchat'ing already, but I feel more comfortable here at the forum. I've got to know people and they've got to know me and my stupid questions. ;) In regard to becoming a Rat, I'll keep posting here. My findings, and other's replies, might help other CMDRs. The best thing I've learned so far is that they exist!!! 5 days ago I was stranded with low fuel and no scoop. 😖 The feeling is indescribable! 😢 I couldn't sleep and yet I really had nothing to lose! I was lucky and got saved by a technical hitch and now go nowhere without my scoop. And then I heard about the Rats ...... 🥰

Looks like they use IRC for communications and therefore need you to choose a nickname that's not in use already on IRC. Try a other nicknames until one is accepted.
Yes ....... the IRC is their means of communication and gratefully I have that all worked out now. (y)

Great to hear you're already in IRC, and look forward to seeing you there sometime. I'm a bit of a part-timer so tend to come and go at irregular intervals. Don't ever think you are asking stupid questions though! No question is stupid and the rats will think more of you for asking! :)

I'd advise you to play the game a bit more first Wombat. Just a few days ago we were discussing the very basics of selling cartographic data...
Yes ....... agreed. I'll also need to upgrade my equipment and I'll need credit for that. Credit that I don't currently have ..... ;)
Have you been on your own exploration trip yet?
No :(
Do you know how to filter for fuel stars?
Yes ;)
How far have you traveled?
Biggest trip 42 Ly
Are you still set for economic route plotting?
No, but need to explore the other options. ;)
Is your ship optimised for long distance travel?
No :(
Do you know how to safely escape a star if you crash into it?
:( No
Have you engineered your FSD?
No :(
Have you used synthesis to create limpets before and do you have the materials?
Limpets ????? No :(
Have you experimented with module priorities?
Sort of ....... but no :(
Sometimes the rats have to save people who are on life support and every second counts.
Not to dissuade you but I don't think you're ready yet. If you're looking for a goal and want to be a fuel rat then I'd start with planning your very own deep space expedition first just to get the experience.
This is what I've been seeking: a list of things to do, get and achieve in my preparation to becoming a Rat. And there will be other things, but this a great start. Thank you.(y)

Oh, I am absolutely certain that that has already happened at some point. Like, no way has there not been a fuel rat who's gotten themselves into trouble.

Being a FR is probably a very fun role but they are VERY strict and the prosses is quite long but they are a tight net group but one of the best squads in EDh as they truly help out people and are a very respectful group. They are known for complete dedication as a role play group as I have been helped a few times, including being stuck out 3,000ly in the middle of nowhere. They still came out and helped. Keep on them, they just need to know your dedication to being a FR.
Very High respected group.

Thanks Fuel Rats for what you do for the game....o7

Thanks. Ok ...... For my long-distance trip, Colonia it is. (y)
But I'll upgrade my ship before going and I'll need a lot more credit for that. colprice2002 in post #6 had some ship suggestions .......
What I did like about Fuel Rat strategy is that it is not just you and you alone sent to save somebody and all the pressure that goes with that! 😰 No, anybody can go. The more the better. ;)

get some exploring under your belt so you get comfortable with fuel scoops and limpets etc

You need to see the dangers and get confidence hear stars, especially the neutron variety. Advanced commanders skip off their jets to get huge FSD jumps.
There is also a material called jumponium that you can manufacture on board.
Hitch a ride on a flea carrier to Colonia the fuel rats have a system and base there.

I cannot recommend the dbx more for novice wanderers, it runs cool all day long.
