Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Not at all. ED is way too big and spread out. If you arent at shinrarta dezhra, engineer systems, community goals, or gold rush systems it is a surprise to see another player. you never really see anyone.

SC it is not a surprise to see other players. No matter where you are.

ED has big gameplay area but if playing in open you can potentially meet thousands of players. If you go to hotspots you're practically guaranteed to.

SC has relatively small gameplay area but limited to a max of 50 players. Go somewhere remote (not a mission objective) and you'll be unlikely to see another player. Go to a popular location, you're more likely to meet someone... or not.

Exactly. That's why I was so taken aback when AA said star citizen was "just like ED really then".

That's because i was referring to LA's allustion than its only in SC when you randomly meet another player and you don't know their intentions. Frequency of those vary from game to game, but they exist in many games.

In GTA, in public, you meet players all the time, and you'll never know what their intentions are.

Well, unless they are flying an Opressor Mk2, then shoot them before they shoot you.

LA - you're living in some sort of really reclusive world if you haven't encountered this in other games. You can get this sort of experience in Ark, GTA, ESO, ED, and a bazillion other games.
With all due respect, you're off your trolley on this one.
I know this, I've played or play all this games (except Ark). I've killed, been killed and I betray or trick from time to time also (not my primary nature). But the way it feels in SC is... different. I don't get why it's different but it is (at least for me). It's more visceral. As I don't know why exactly, it's not a real argument for a discussion.

SC defintitely has a way of making things that are doable in other games, maybe even years ago, seem amazing. Today, I'm moving it to me SSD. Im going to be amazed when #1 it runs, #2 it's any faster than on the HDD. A few weeks ago, I met up with someone in the game. Amazeballs! I couldnt believe. I was in SC, and actually saw a friend from another game, in SC and we chatted. I was blown away. Then...kinda, isnt that what almost every other game has for 20 years? But did I have that initial amazing feeling? Yup.

This could be part of their whole strategy. To be fair, I find FD not far different in that regard, for example, if we ever get a VR keyboard in ED, I'll be elated! Something most other VR games that barely have the need for, but have had for the past 5 years.

Ok, this is just an opinion but I saw pics of their new ship which seems fresh, and ASPy. But seeing the image from the link in this post below and think, is it me, or are SC ships just crappy looking? A few years ago they sorta seemed fresh to me, but now, those same ships look a bit off. The ships in ED are solid ships that I thought looked maybe a bit simplistic, but after years, they've grown on me. They look great, and proper, if there is such a thing. My guess is, as time goes on, they'll be "updating" those SC ships, changing their core look even, to make them seem fresh. So their designs seem more in the moment, great looking, more than longevity.

Megawhale Jorunn and other whales get together to fly their e-willies.

Just look at all those frames per second! They may even be reaching double digits at some point!

I don't recall "most other VR games" having a keyboard for the past five years. Seems that would be completely pointless for most other VR games.

Then again, I just use the keyboard if needed.

Personally, I recommend VR users who struggle with not being able to use the keyboard go to this site:

edit: Rereading the sentence I wrote, I'm suddenly reminded of an infomercial. "Do you struggle with such basic tasks as using a towel to dry yourself? Why, for only five instalments of $19.95, you too can use this 'high tech' marvel: the handheld handi-dryer. Just point the open end at the area you want to dry, flip the switch, and magic 'infra-rays' will dry that water in just minutes! Order now, because supplies are limited!"

edit 2: Oh, lord... I might've given Christ Robbers an idea to add to the game...

So far, after 8 years in the development of the Star Citizen Franken-engine they haven't been able to get vehicles to go up a ramp reliably without exploding or glitching through the physics, ships to land on planets or vehicles to drive along the surface without falling through or glitching through the physics or players able to reliably walk around the physics grid without falling through, elevators to work reliably without breaking the laws of physics, NPC's to realistically interact with the environment by walking through doors or board a ship...and you think Ci¬G will actually manage to implement a ship being able to dock with a station or another ship?

I think not.

The Star Citizen ships have had those supposed docking collars since the hangar module back in 2015...the original Cutlass Black model had them (just like those on the Cutlass Red) before its remodelling back in 2017 which replaced them with sliding side doors, the Constellation series had them from concept and still have ...not to mention the Merlin snub fighter which was supposed to be dockable back in 2016 (it was a main selling point), the Caterpillar was designed from concept to have a dockable cockpit module and individual, dockable cargo sections back in 2016 (it was a main selling point)... not once since this ship to ship and ship to shore docking was mentioned back in 2016 and version 2.5...and despite many attempts to implement it... have Ci¬G managed to make this seemingly magical docking feature a reality :)

You know Mole, it's when you write stuff like this that I start to suspect that there may be problems with SC...

Sorry mate, this sounds like special pleading

The main thing that strikes me when playing SC is that it's devoid of NPC ships. At a port, station or R&R stops...besides the occasional other player you might see docking, or pointlessly shooting at each other for 'reasons'... SC's entire playing area is devoid of that necessary NPC ship traffic to make it seem alive. I've no doubt someone will mention the Happy Valley type of totally unresponsive walking zombies that inhabit the interior spaces...but that's not AI in any shape or form...they're simply moving scenery with no more programmed intelligence than the spinning rings of Olisar station.

Being a long time Elite player, it's hard not to notice SC's completely empty vistas...even parked on a planetary body in Elite, there were always the odd NPC ships cruising overhead, stations felt like they were alive as much as there are no other little human forms behind the windows of the space station interiors, soon to be rectified with the introduction of Odyssey of course.

Ci¬G can't manage to get their Ai to reliably control or fly ships...or even perform basic tasks like walk through doors, that's why there is none. It's not the lack of other human players that makes a game seem dead, it's the complete absence of believable Ai.

That's a strange one for me. While the faithful love to talk about how CR promised NPC to player ratio of 100 to 1, with NPCs being indistinguishable from players, the fact that the only place you will see NPCs flying ships is in a couple of missions, with no NPC traffic, is quite bizarre.
