I just bought the Odyssey Deluxe pre-order.

Fyi for those who just pre-ordered Odyssey on Steam only for it to break their ability to play Horizons.

Right-click on Elite Dangerous in Steam
Go to the "DLC" tab
Uncheck the "Elite Dangerous: Odyssey" DLC
Go to the "LOCAL FILES" tab
Click "VERIFY INTERGITY OF GAME FILES..."
After it runs the check, it will tell you that it found some issues with some files and fix the problem after which the game will be playable again.

I can't say for sure how to fix the issue on other launchers but this got me back to being able to play Horizons on Steam.

And now I can't play regular Elite Dangerous. The same authentication problem people were having back when the game was launched in Epic Games Store.

What should I do?

Gamers need to stop pre-ordering.

Pre-orders incentivize hype and short-changing customers.

Don't do it. For the love of gaming, do not do it. If you do, you deserve the continual degradation of game quality you receive.

The game is still months away. I pre-ordered because...

1) One way or another I'm gonna buy the game so I might as well get it with extra goodies

2) To help push Fdev over the finish line sooner.

And 3) Alpha Access

Why to what? To why I can't play the game?
I have no idea. As I said, it's apparently for the same reason people couldn't back when the game was launched in Epic Games.

I just wanted to pre-order it so I could help them and go back to play my regular Elite Dangerous, but seems like I got punished for pre-ordering it.

Why pre-order the game? I guess you may have already seen enough to feel that you know you want it. But even so, why pre-order? Is it as you mentioned above, to help out FDEV financially?

I got mine via Frontier store (not Steam) and it's fine so I'm guessing it's directly related to the third party process itself. Hope they fix it soon.

Edit: no 5gb patch either. There's the possibility this is the fault of Steam rather than just fdev.

Why give someone else your money before you get anything in return? Particularly a game?

Pre-order anything is a way for businesses to float customer money for free, makes good sense for them if enough people buy into it.

Gotta love capitalism!

Also early adopters are free bug hunters. I'll wait for a while after release.
Pre-ordering is a way for me to get a game asap and forget about it until the moment it shows up in my library. WIthout having to waste time remembering that I need to buy something, particularly a game.

Then again, this doesn't go for all games but for those that I know I will buy anyway. Any pre-order bells and whistles is a bonus.

Just like @Beer Attack said:

And, of course, to help out Frontier.
