Newcomer / Intro Fuel Scoop Question .....

Yes ..... I'm still flying the introductory Sidewinder. I haven't even graduated yet ! The 105 jumps took me to a System that I had a particular interest in. ;)
The Sidewinder once you can upgrade it with better modules and later engineer those modules is a remarkably capable ship but it will have its limitations.

At the moment I'm looking for the following:
Interim Ship: DBX (Cost: 15 mil. credits with 68.1LY max. jump range)
Ultimate Ship: ASP Explorer (Cost: 30 mil. credits with 62.1LY max. jump range)
Full-size A-rated FSD,
Largest possible Fuel Scoop,
Small Shield Generator,
Adv. Discovery and Detailer Surface Scanners,
Auto. Field Maint. Unit.

I wish to avoid purchasing, and hence using, a Full Spectrum System Scanner (FSS).

Advanced Discovery Scanner, you won’t need that and indeed can’t find one anymore it was removed from the game as a stand-alone module when it was replaced with the FSS which is built into every ship.

Right. It must be an old U-Tube clip I've been watching and totally forgot about the built-in Scanners ! But that's my memory, or lack of it, issue again .... 😞

Always check the dates of U-Tube clips and other guides.
Is almost as important a rule as Never Fly Without a Rebuy.

Just remember you will only get anywhere near those stated jump ranges with G5 engineering, FSD Booster and a barebones ship. You might not need the largest scoop also, the second largest might be enough. On most of my ships, the largest that will fit, fills up the tank and shuts off even before I have rounded the star to hit jump for the next system.

Both DBX and ASP X are lovely ships, I have both and I use them still for exploring and planet landings. I think after a Sidey, you will be happy with either. The ASP X can even be used as a miner.

... You know you're probably gona need to learn how to FSS at some point right? Especially if you want to go exploring. In fact, you should be FSS'ing every system you go to even now, the money you'll earn passively by doing so is probably more than what you're earning currently, and it's basically risk free. The FSS is honestly not that hard, it just looks a bit intimidating initially with all those signal lines and such, but is really just a big telescope-esque device to zoom in on planets.

However, my primary aim is to become a Fuel Rat. I hoping the need to acquire FSS skills and their use will not be directly needed. Yes, indirectly maybe, but I'm prepared to accept the loss. I don't believe it's a direct, consequential need. Here's hoping. ;)

I was like you, thinking to skip the FSS because it seemed so annoying to learn. The first couple times I tried I just gave up after a few seconds of mashing the buttons.

After that, I found out it seemed troublesome only because I WAS NOT EXPECTING IT TO BE SO SIMPLE. Its literally just sliding a pointer from left to right until it beeps. Thats it. Slide a pointer left to right or right to left until it beeps. Duh!

Oh, and you want your name plastered on the Universe Map/Universal Carthographics as First Discoverer no?

I tend to leave the slider in the middle and scroll around the system until arrows show up. Once you've found an orbit line, you can move along it to find most of the bodies. It's not 100% true for all systems of course.

If you don't get arrows, you may still get a blue blob and these tend to be gas giants so moving the tuning slider to the right will get those arrows appearing.

It is VERY annoying to FSS in systems with lots and lots of USS or Non Human SS (and usually these also come with 600 fleet carriers) though, so much spam. I tend to skip the FSS on those.

How'd u guess. Ha!

Yes, but it's the justification to use it that is putting me off: I don't have one, or think I don't. Ha!
I think what might change my mind is its ability to earn good money, credit. At the moment I'm virtually broke with a desperate need for credit. So standby, who knows ........ :D

I was able to earn 3 million in about 20 minutes on my alt account, who just started a week ago, simply by using the FSS in a couple of known-lucrative systems. So there's that.

But honestly, before you bother, I think you need a bit more experience in the game, and at least a few upgrades to the Sidey to give it more jump range.

I can help you with the details, if you like. Perhaps in a more private conversation.

As to FSS, if you ever decide to start using it (and you should, you can find really neat stuff out there that way and you get your tags on stuff), do yourself a favor and map it to your mouse. I'm dedicated HOTAS, but I thank my Maker fasting for the day another CMDR finally convinced me to venture back into the settings menu to move it to mouse.

Since then, I can comfortably fully map a system with 40 bodies or more in it in a matter of minutes.

I know, and I'm not even super at it. There are those that can do it even better.

Set left mouse to zoom in, right to zoom out and the scroll wheel to change the frequency. Then the rest is just a matter of setting the sensitivities to your personal sweet spot.

(Another tip, to avoid those irritating moments when the body you want to zoom in on is behind the star, turn so your butt is facing the star when you're done scooping, then SC for about 30 seconds or so at full blast before you slow down to nothing and start FSS'ing.)

Don't you mean "comfortably fully SCAN a system with 40 bodies or more in it in a matter of minutes"?- Mapping (DSS) would entail travelling etc so not "matter of minutes".
Oops. You are, of course, absolutely right. Poor terminology on my part. Trying to map (DSS) a system that large would be impossible, even if they were all stacked on top of each other.

I did, of course, mean "scanning" (FSS). My bad. Thanks, and apologies to anybody I might have given false expectations.
